No. 3 Texas Tech takes NCAA Tournament-record 46 3-pointers and beats No. 14 UNC Wilmington 82-72
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Kerwin Walton scored a career-high 27 points and No. 3 seed Texas Tech attempted an NCAA Tournament-record 46 3-pointers in an 82-72 victory over No. 14 seed UNC Wilmington on Thursday night.
The Red Raiders raced to a 16-point lead, lost most of it by going cold in the final 6 1/2 minutes of the first half and then made enough plays down the stretch to recover after the Seahawks went ahead with about 14 minutes remaining.
Texas Tech (26-8) finished 13 for 46 behind the arc, breaking the tournament record of 43 attempts by Saint Joseph's in a 1997 second-round game against Boston College. The 46 3s also set a school record.
Elijah Hawkins contributed 14 points for the Red Raiders and Darrion Williams had 13 to set up a second-round matchup with No. 11 seed Drake on Saturday. Big 12 Player of the Year JT Toppin had 12 points and 10 rebounds for his 16th double-double of the season.
Nolan Hodge scored 18 points for UNC Wilmington (27-8), the Coastal Athletic Association Champion. The Seahawks shot 41% from the floor.

No. 11 Arizona State now seeks something special after Big 12 title debut in unpredictable league
Arizona State was a big surprise debuting in the Big 12 with a conference championship and making the College Football Playoff after being picked to finish at the bottom of the 16-team league. Kenny Dillingham, the 35-year-old coach now in his third season at his alma mater, bluntly told his Sun Devils they really didn't do anything special last year. 'The reality is there's been a lot of teams in college football who have done what we've done, who have won one year and then come back to reality,' Dillingham said. 'What would be special would be to continue to build off of that. The real challenge was how do we not become what normal teams in our situation do, which is fall back to where we've always been.' After a CFP quarterfinal loss in double overtime to now preseason No. 1 Texas, the No. 11 Sun Devils are the highest-ranked team from the unpredictable Big 12, even after the departure of do-everything running back Cam Skattebo to the NFL. They return quarterback Sam Leavitt (2,855 yards, 24 TDs passing), the preseason Big 12 offensive player of the year, and receiver Jordyn Tyson (75 catches, 1,101 yards, 10 TDs) is healthy after missing the end of the last season with a collarbone injury. The last time Arizona State was higher in the preseason Associated Press Top 25 was No. 8 in 1998, what turned into a 5-6 season. The Big 12's other ranked teams are No. 17 Kansas State and league runner-up No. 22 Iowa State, who open against each other with a conference game in Ireland on Aug. 23, along with No. 23 Texas Tech. All return quality starting quarterbacks. Texas Tech transformed its program with big money through the transfer portal and made the preseason poll for the first time since 2008, six years before three-time Super Bowl champion quarterback Patrick Mahomes played a game for the Red Raiders. Passers and a rusher make contenders Baylor redshirt sophomore Bryson Washington (1,028 yards, 12 TDs) is the only of the Big 12's eight 1,000-yard rushers back from last season. The Bears, who won their last six regular-season games, also return quarterback Sawyer Robertson (3,335 yards, 27 TDs). Leading passer Shedeur Sanders (4,134 yards, 37 TDs) went in the NFL draft after two seasons at Colorado, but the next eight top QBs were all coming back, including Iowa State's Rocco Becht, Texas Tech's Behren Morton and K-State's Avery Johnson. The only change was Jake Retzlaff unexpectedly leaving BYU this spring after a since-dismissed civil sexual assault lawsuit. Three seasons after making the national title game, TCU has Josh Hoover (3,949 yards, 27 TDs) after a 9-4 season capped by four consecutive wins. Old coaches feeling some heat Only Iowa's Kirk Ferentz in his 27th season has been with his FBS team longer than Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy and Utah's Kyle Whittingham. The Big 12's stalwarts are coming off huge disappointments in their 20th seasons. Utah was the presumptive favorite last year to be the team to make its Big 12 debut with a title, but had its first losing season (5-7, 2-7 Big 12) since 2013. Two-time Pac-12 champion quarterback Cam Rising had to 'medically retire', but dual-threat QB Devon Dampier followed new offensive coordinator Jason Beck from New Mexico. Oklahoma State was 3-9 and didn't win a conference game, its first losing season since Gundy's 4-7 debut in 2005. And there is still plenty of uncertainty with two new coordinators and a lot of transfers. 'The changes in how we go about rebuilding, whether it's financially or roster management, have been challenging but also intriguing,' Gundy said. 'It's different than it's ever been before.' Familiar new coaches Scott Frost has reunited with UCF and Rich Rodriguez is back at West Virginia, but they are new coaches to the Big 12 since those schools weren't yet in the league when they were there. 'Whatever head coaching spot, it takes you six to nine months to kind of get a lay of the land,' Rodriguez said. 'Well, West Virginia took six to nine minutes. ... But, then again, there's also times of change.' The Mountaineers are in their 14th Big 12 season. They has three consecutive 11-win seasons in the Big East from 2005-07 before Rodriguez went to Michigan. This is UCF's third Big 12 season. Frost coached UCF's undefeated season out of the American Athletic Conference in 2017, when the Knights declared themselves national champions and he left for Nebraska. Games to watch TCU opens 2026 in Ireland against North Carolina, but this year will be in Chapel Hill as the visitor for Bill Belichick's UNC debut on Labor Day night. The Horned Frogs two years ago lost their season opener in coach Deion Sanders' first game with Colorado. Sanders, who was treated this summer for bladder cancer, has his first Buffs game without a son on the team Aug. 29 against Georgia Tech. Top 5 Texas Longhorns Football rivalries now include SEC, Big Ten antagonists
A lot has changed for the Texas Longhorns as a program since joining the SEC. One change the teams UT is and will be rivals with. Almost every team that plays Texas considers them a rival. "Horns Down" much? There are some rivals that never truly go away. But as the landscape UT plays in changes, so do the rivalries. The Sooners are always there. Heck, the rivals joined forces, held hands and joined the SEC together. Even though there was a huge break, the Aggies are always there too. But some of Texas past rivals aren't really in the picture for the foreseeable future. Texas Tech might be the biggest example of an idle rivalry. It's likely, the only way these two teams play in the future is the occasional random bowl game or in the college football playoff, if both teams make it. Certainly, there will be recruiting battles with the Red Raiders. But they're not an active rival anymore. It does not seem Texas is looking to fill its future non-conference schedule with teams from the past. The break from Tech seems more final than the break with A&M felt. Some argue over the past decade, TCU has been one of the Longhorns biggest rivals. The two battled for a century and then had some tight Big 12 games as the Horned Frogs improved and the Horns didn't. Baylor has been a rival in the past. Even Rice. But they aren't now and won't be again. Texas has some new rivals now. One is a team UT will be battling against in the SEC for years. Another is a team Texas seems to be playing more and more and for big stakes. Here are the Texas Longhorns Top 5 current rivalries: 5. Ohio State Buckeyes When Texas travels to Columbus, OH on Aug. 30 to face Ohio State, it will only be the fifth meeting between the two blue blood programs. But make no mistake, the Buckeyes are a rival now. As Sark has lifted the Texas program to greater heights, the Horns now regularly face traditional national title contenders in the college football playoffs. Texas and Ohio State could literally meet every year in the postseason since both will probably be in the tournament, no matter how big it is. The teams also play again next year in Austin. Texas also has dozens of recruiting battles against Ryan Day on the Buckeyes. 4. Georgia Bulldogs As the to dog (so to speak) in the SEC over the past several years, Georgia was always going to be the target when the Longhorns joined the conference. The Bulldogs and Horns seem to compete for everything, including rankings, recruits and championships. Both UGA coach Kirby Smart and Sarkisian coached under former Alabama coach Nick Saban and run their programs in his image. Texas and Georgia recruit head-to-head on dozens of recruits a year. The 'Dawgs and Longhorns will be battling over everything over the next few years. 3. Arkansas Razorbacks During college football's boom from the 1950s-1970s, the Texas-Arkansas rivalry was one of the biggest in the sport. The "Game of the Century" in 1969 decided the national championship. President Richard Nixon was in the crowd and crowned Texas in the locker room after the game. Arkansas fans hate the Longhorns. A 30 year break as conference members didn't dim that burning Hog fire. Texas saw it last year and two seasons before when the Razorbacks upset Texas. Now back in the same conference, it is hot again. 2. Oklahoma Sooners The second Saturday of October is one of the biggest traditions in college football. The Red River Rivalry, played at a neutral site in Dallas, is like a bowl game in the middle of the season. The unique neutral site seating at the Cotton Bowl Stadium, with the fans split at the 50-yard line as opposed to the more traditional neutral seating with each fan base getting a side with the split in the end zones, also makes the game during the Texas State Fair more of a spectacle. 1. Texas A&M Aggies When Texas plays OU, fans generally want both teams to be undefeated, with the winner entering the national title race in mid-October. When Texas plays A&M, many fans want a win over the Aggies to make them 0-12. The Aggies are the Longhorns biggest rival, by a mile. The anger, hatred and vitriol that emerged as the two teams met last season for the first time in over a decade sealed it. The series goes back over a century and it's good to have it back. Honorable Mention: LSU Tigers LSU and Texas have battled recently in other sports, but not in football. That's about to change. If the Tigers are good this year, UT could see them across the field at the SEC title game. Or the college football playoff. But Texas and LSU are going to play next year and will continue to play for years. Tigers fans already have tacit resentment of Texas so far. Wait until the teams play over and over. The Tigers and Horns should be at or near the top of the SEC for years to come and they are neighbors. They're coming.
