South Africa beat Zimbabwe by five wickets in the T20 tri-series opener in Harare. Hermann and Brevis led the chase after Zimbabwe scored 141/6.
South Africa continued their dominance over Zimbabwe by defeating their neighbours by five wickets in the opening match of a Twenty20 international tri-series at Harare Sports Club on Monday.
New Zealand will play their first match of the tournament against South Africa at the same venue on Wednesday.
Zimbabwe were limited to 141 for six after being sent in to bat, with captain Sikandar Raza top-scoring with 54 not out.
Both teams made several changes following a two-match Test series in Bulawayo, which South Africa won comfortably.
Opening bowler Lungi Ngidi took a wicket and conceded only seven runs in his three-over opening spell.
Left-arm spinner George Linde took three for 10, including two wickets for four runs in the last over.
South Africa lost three wickets in the six-over power play against aggressive left-arm fast bowler Richard Ngarava and seamer Trevor Gwandu.
However, new cap Rubin Hermann (45) and hard-hitting player of the match Dewald Brevis, who smashed 41 off 17 balls, put on 72 for the fourth wicket to ensure a comfortable win.
South African captain Rassie van der Dussen praised the two young batters.
'There was a little bit of pressure up front," he said. 'Losing three wickets in the power play was not ideal but their partnership was brilliant."
Brevis hit five sixes and a four in his innings, including three successive sixes off leg-spinner Ryan Burl.
Raza said Ngarava, who took three for 35, and Gwandu (two for 15) were outstanding.
'It was the first game of the winter (in Harare) and we weren't sure of the wicket," said Raza of his team's batting performance.
'At least we know these are going to be high-scoring games."

Ben Stokes doubles down on attack against Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar: 'I told Harry Brook don't do anything...'

England captain Ben Stokes believes even if Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar did not score centuries in the second innings of the Manchester Test, one couldn't have undermined their efforts as the duo helped India walk away with a memorable draw in the fourth match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The final half an hour on Day 5 witnessed some high drama after the Indian batters refused to accept Ben Stokes' call of shaking hands early, and calling the game off as a draw was the only probable result. Ben Stokes doubles down on the attack against Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar(AFP) Both Jadeja and Sundar hadn't gotten their centuries then, so it is not surprising that the duo did not shake hands with their English counterparts. When Stokes offered to call the contest off, Jadeja and Sundar were batting on 89 and 80, respectively. However, Stokes and Co. were not pleased with Jadeja and Sundar's call, and they let their feelings be known by saying some unpleasant and nasty words in the middle. England turned to part-timers Harry Brook and Joe Root as Stokes decided to give his frontline bowlers a rest. Brook bowled full toss after full toss with an almost standstill action. 'The knock that those two played was very, very good. The situation that India found themselves in there, with us opening the game slightly, that partnership was massive. You hold your hands up. They played incredibly, incredibly well. And I don't think there would've been too much more satisfaction from walking off a hundred not out, getting your team out of a tricky situation, than walking off at 80, 90 not out,' Stokes told reporters in the post-match press conference. Also Read: 'Spare us the whining. Spirit of what?' Australian media takes Ben Stokes and England to the cleaners 'That's what you've done for your team. You know, the 10 more runs or whatever it was ain't gonna change the fact that you've managed to get your team out of a very, very, very tricky situation and almost saved your team from a series defeat before the last game,' he added. No risk to frontline bowlers Stokes also explained his decision to employ Harry Brook and Joe Root. He said he wanted to rest his frontline bowlers as there is just a three-day turnaround period for the fifth and final Test at the Oval, which begins on Thursday, July 31. "We were willing to take it as far as we possibly could and throw everything at them that we did, but it got to that point where there was obviously only one result left on the table and I wasn't going to be risking any of my frontline bowlers in a situation like that, especially when we've got a quick turnaround," he said. 'The only other person who actually has any bowling workload in them is Harry Brook. But I did have to say to him, Please don't do anything stupid. We've been out in the field for 200-and-whatever overs, we've got a quick turnaround, so just do what needs to be done. I said don't do anything daft: don't pull a side, don't pull a hamstring. We knew what was going on there,' he added. England lead the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2-1, and there's everything to play for both India and England in the fifth and final Test.

President Murmu congratulates Divya Deshmukh for World Cup success

New Delhi, Jul 28 (PTI) President Droupadi Murmu on Monday congratulated chess player Divya Deshmukh for winning the FIDE Women's World Cup in Georgia, saying the youngster's achievement underlines the abundance of talent in the country. Deshmukh achieved the feat with a tie-break win over seasoned compatriot Koneru Humpy. 'My heartiest congratulations to Divya Deshmukh who has become the first Indian woman to win the FIDE Women's World Cup, that too, at a very young age of nineteen. Koneru Humpy being the runner up, both the finalists of the chess world championship were from India. This underlines the abundance of talent in our country, especially among women," the President wrote on X. The victory not just earned the 19-year-old the prestigious title, but also made her a Grandmaster, something which looked improbable when she started the tournament. Murmu conveyed deep appreciation to Humpy for sustaining excellence throughout her illustrious career. 'I am sure that both these women champions will continue to bring greater glories and inspire our youth," she added. PTI AKV AT AT Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Washington Sundar's Father Accuses India Selectors Of Bias: 'Only My Son...'

Last Updated: Washington Sundar's father has accused Indian selectors of bias and favoritism despite his son's consistent performances. All-rounder Washington Sundar's father, Mr. Mani Sundar, has accused Indian selectors of bias and favoritism against his son. He believes that, unlike other players who 'get regular chances', only Washington gets dropped even after good performances, while also missing selections when he deserves to play. The comments come soon after Sundar's match-saving century at Old Trafford. He came to bat at a time when the team had lost two set batters in KL Rahul and Shubman Gill in quick succession, on a tricky pitch, with England still threatening an innings defeat on the final day. He smashed 101 off 206 balls, in an unbeaten 203-run stand alongside Ravindra Jadeja to see off over three hours of play, forcing England to offer a draw. 'Washington has been doing very well consistently," Mr. Sundar said in an interview with The Times of India. 'However, people tend to avoid and forget his performances. Other players get regular chances, only my son doesn't get them. Washington should consistently bat at number five like he did in the second innings of the fourth Test and get five to ten straight chances. My son was surprisingly not picked for the first Test against England. The selectors should watch his performances," he added. 'My son gets dropped even if he fails in just one or two matches. It is not fair. Washington scored an unbeaten 85 on a rank turner in Chennai against England back in 2021 and 96* against the same opposition in Ahmedabad during the same year. He would have been dropped even if those two knocks had ended up in centuries. Has this kind of an approach been maintained for any other Indian cricketer? He has become very strong after all this and the result is the performance which people are witnessing now," the senior Sundar said. Sundar got picked in all three Tests after the first. Though his batting returns remained sub-par in the first two, he was excellent with the ball, including with a brilliant four-wicket haul at Lord's in the third match. 'Even his IPL team didn't give him regular chances": Senior Sundar Mr. Sundar also took a dig at the Gujarat Titans for not giving him regular chances — he played just six of the team's 15 matches. 'Even his current team (GT) don't give him regular chances. He showcased his calibre in the IPL 2025 Eliminator against Mumbai Indians (MI), smashing 48 off 24 balls. Look at the way Yashasvi Jaiswal has been backed by RR. Washington hasn't been able to enjoy a consistent run even in case of domestic cricket," he added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
