Operation Sindoor: Pakistan Launched 1,000 Drones Against India; Majority Of Them Neutralised By Army
"..I would say anything between 800 to 1000 across the whole western border in four days. A large number of them were destroyed. One thing for sure is that all the Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles [UCAV] which carried a payload, although they intended to harm our civilian population and they were directed towards population centres, we ensured that they did not cause any damage, and I think the proof of the pudding is actually in what we actually saw, that there were no civilian casualties..." Lt Gen D'Cunha told ANI in an exclusive interview.
The top Army officer credited Operation Sindoor for its success and praised the joint coordination between the Army, Navy, and Air Force in countering drone and missile threats from Pakistan. Explaining the division of responsibilities among the services, he said, "The role for air defence is shared between the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The Air Force is the primary respondent, but each service has its part. The Army is in charge of the airspace and rear areas within the Tactical Battle Area (TBA), while the Air Force protects important places like major cities and refineries. If we have a strong radar system to detect threats like drones and a well-layered defence setup, we can respond effectively. The first layer could be guns with a range of around three kilometres, then missiles at 10 kilometres, and then you have a leaker, which comes through to be very unfortunate."
Lt Gen D'Cunha described India's layered air defence system, saying there are multiple levels of protection. The first includes guns with a two-kilometre range, followed by V-SHORAD missiles with a 3.5 km range, the Akash missile system with an 18 km range, and longer-range systems like MR-SAM and S-400. "Whether it's a gun, a shoulder-fired missile like V-SHORAD, the indigenous Akash system, or the MR-SAM, each weapon operates at a specific altitude. Guns can engage targets up to 1.8 to 2 km, V-SHORAD up to 3.5 km, Akash up to 18 km, MR-SAM around 14 km, and the S-400 can also go up to 18 km. The altitude of the threat helps determine the most suitable weapon system to use. In an automated system like Akash Teer, which is still being rolled out, this process becomes highly efficient. Akash Teer of the Army and the IACCS of the Air Force work together to ensure proper use of resources and timely weapon allocation," he said.
He added that although the S-400 system is operated by the Air Force's IACCS due to its cost and long range, close coordination now exists between the Army and Air Force through automated systems. When asked about the nature of the drone attacks, Lt Gen D'Cunha said, "Many flew very low to confuse gunners and saturate our radars. These drones were within the range of our guns and were effectively brought down. As they moved higher, into the next engagement zone up to 2 km, they were targeted again. Our jammers and electronic warfare systems also played a role, using techniques like jamming, cyber spoofing, and even cyber takeover to neutralise the threats."
He also praised the indigenous Akashteer system, which plays a key role in coordinating air defence operations. "We have rolled out the Akash system, and in fact, the complete translation of the Air Force's IACCS (Integrated Air Command and Control System) picture into the Tactical Battle Area is done through Akash Teer. It's an outstanding system that provides a centralised view of the airspace, clearly identifying enemy targets and passing that information all the way down to the weapon systems on the ground. Akash Teer is fully indigenous and completely integrated."
Akashteer provides a common, real-time air picture to all involved parties (control room, radars and Defence Gun), enabling coordinated air defence operations. It is a system designed to automate detection, tracking and engagement of enemy aircraft, drones and missiles. It integrates various radar systems, sensors and communication technologies into a single operational framework.
Akashteer gathers data from multiple sources, processes it and allows for automated, real-time engagement decisions. Akashteer is part of the broader C4ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) framework, working in coordination with other systems. The system is vehicle-based, which makes it mobile and easier to handle in a hostile environment.

Wang Yi to arrive in New Delhi on Aug. 18 with India, China set for 24th round of border talks
Before that, SR talks had been suspended after the December 2019 round in New Delhi, following the May 2020 standoff in multiple locations in Eastern Ladakh. Since then, the two countries have taken steps to ease tensions, including the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and multiple high-level meetings between their foreign and defence ministers. Tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) have persisted since the 2020 standoff, with both sides maintaining a heavy troop presence and military equipment along the frontier, even as disengagement has taken place at five flashpoints. In November 2024, following sustained military and diplomatic talks, patrolling resumed in Demchok and Depsang. Earlier disengagements were carried out in Galwan, Gogra, Hot Springs, and the north and south banks of Pangong Tso. De-induction of troops will depend on confidence-building measures, followed by de-escalation. While forces have withdrawn from certain standoff sites, there has been no overall reduction in troop strength or infrastructure on either side. Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi said in January that the LAC remained 'stable but sensitive' despite 'a degree of standoff.' He stressed that troop levels depended on mutual trust. 'Troop deployment directly depends on the trust factor and the capabilities that have been built on either side... And seeing the current situation, maintaining the current troop levels is needed... During winters, the focus remains on stability, and any changes will only come after a comprehensive review in summer,' Gen. Dwivedi said. He added that since April 2020, 'both sides have doctored the terrain,' with increased troop numbers and stocks of arms and ammunition. 'So in these terms there is a degree of standoff,' he said. Defence and security analyst Major General Sudhakar Jee (Retd) reiterated that India continues to hold its position on restoring the status quo ante. He said: 'Current profile of 'Extended Stand-off' must restore status quo ante to pre-April 2020 profile. Troops on both sides must de-escalate, de-mobilise and de-induct in a reasonable time-frame and a permanent solution to resolve the long pending border dispute must be undertaken making use of Protocol 2005. The 3,488 km long border be delineated on map and demarcated on ground between two neighbours at the earliest.' Gen. Sudhakar, who commanded the Indian Army's Trishul Division responsible for defending the 932-km Eastern Ladakh frontier, stressed that the long-term solution lies in formal demarcation. The 3,488-km Line of Actual Control (LAC), the de facto boundary between India and China, is divided into the eastern, middle and western sectors, with multiple disputed points agreed upon by both sides.

Rajasthan sarpanches express gratitude to PM Modi for their I-Day experience at Red Fort
Sarpanches from the border areas of Barmer, Jaisalmer, Bikaner and Ganganagar were invited to the Red Fort in the national capital on the occasion of Independence Day on August 15 (Friday). Those present at the Red Fort on Friday shared their experience on Sunday. The sarpanches said they never thought that they would be called to Delhi and felicitated. They also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BSF. The Border Security Force (BSF) carried out innovative initiatives on the occasion of Independence Day celebrations. Under this, along with BSF jawans at the border, the young public representatives who were always ready to serve the country were always invited as special guests. They got the opportunity to participate as special guests at the Red Fort. The aim of this initiative is to honour the public representatives. BSF IG Madanlal Garg said that the government had launched a vibrant village scheme, under which the village should be strengthened and the people of the village get employment in the village itself, and they should not go elsewhere. According to a statement, more than 220 schemes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government are being 100 per cent implemented in Vibrant Villages. Vibrant Village Programme is proving to be a milestone in addressing the problem of migration from border villages. Sarpanch Bhartharam of Navatla Bakhasar village in Barmer district, sarpanch of Kanwarpura in Sri Ganganagar district, Sanjana, sarpanch of 22 KYD in Bikaner district, and Geet Kanwar, Sarpanch of Myajlar in Jaisalmer district, had received special invitations. BSF IG Madanlal Garg told the media that during Operation Sindoor, it was our responsibility to protect the people living in the border area. These people were also associated with us during this time. Their ability to stay at the border is unique. He said that the village residents "supported us during Operation Sindoor... there was no need to evacuate the village". One sarpanch each from villages in four districts of the border was selected to be called to Delhi. Sarpanches were called under the Centre's Vibrant Village Scheme. The Vibrant Village Scheme aims to develop the villages across the border areas. Through skill development, scope for new employment opportunities is aimed to be created so that the people of the village do not need to go to urban areas in search of employment. Sanjana, 22 KYD Sarpanch, Bikaner district, said: 'We were called to honour on the occasion of Independence Day. It was a great idea to meet PM Modi. Travelled in his life for the first time in an airplane." Bhartharam, Sarpanch of Navatla Bakhasar village in Barmer district, told IANS that it was a great experience. "During Operation Sindoor, we encouraged the BSF, so we were called to Delhi on Independence Day. It is a matter of great pride for all of us. We never thought we would get a chance to travel." Sarpanch Geeta Kanwar said: "I feel proud that on August 15, PM Modi extended an invitation. The BSF made quite good arrangements to take us to Delhi. It was good to listen to the Prime Minister's speech at the Red Fort. I thank PM Modi for inviting us."

US seeks shipbuilding expertise from South Korea, Japan to counter China
Washington, Aug 17 (AP) American lawmakers are using a trip to South Korea and Japan to explore how the United States can tap those allies' shipbuilding expertise and capacity to help boost its own capabilities, which are dwarfed by those of China. Sens Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill, and Andy Kim, D-NJ, who are scheduled to land in Seoul before travelling to Japan, plan to meet top shipbuilders from the world's second- and third-largest shipbuilding countries. The senators want to examine the possibilities of forming joint ventures to construct and repair noncombatant vessels for the US Navy in the Indo-Pacific and bring investments to American shipyards. 'We already have fewer capacity now than we did during 'Operation Iraqi Freedom' in 2003," Duckworth told The Associated Press. 'We have to rebuild the capacity. At the same time, what capacity we have is aging and breaking down and taking longer and more expensive to fix." Their trip comes as President Donald Trump demands a plan to revive US shipyards and engage foreign partners. The Pentagon is seeking USD 47 billion for shipbuilding in its annual budget. The urgency stems from the fact that Washington severely lags behind China in building naval ships, a situation raising alarms among policymakers who worry the maritime balance of power could shift to China, now the world's number 1 shipbuilder. Another possibility is repairing US ships in the Indo-Pacific region. 'If we have to bring ships all the way back to the United States… to wait two years to be fixed, that doesn't help the situation," Duckworth said. The discussions, she said, will focus on auxiliary vessels, which are noncombatant ships such as fuelling and cargo vessels that support naval and military operations. The Navy's auxiliary fleet is aging and insufficient in numbers, she said. The US commercial shipbuilding accounted for 0.1 per cent of global capacity in 2024, while China produced 53 per cent, followed by South Korea and Japan, according to a report by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies. A Navy review from April 2024 found that many of its major shipbuilding programmes were one year to three years behind schedule. During the trip, the senators are expected to meet representatives from major shipbuilders in the region. South Korea and the US are already making progress on shipbuilding cooperation. In March, Hanwha Ocean completed maintenance work for a 41,000-ton US Navy dry cargo and ammunition ship in South Korea. The overhaul of USNS Wally Schirra was the Korean company's first project after it secured a repair agreement with the US Navy in July 2024. Hanwha Group last year acquired Philly Shipyard in Philadelphia, which builds large merchant mariners, part of the reserve auxiliary fleet. Earlier this month, South Korea proposed to invest USD 150 billion in the US shipbuilding industry to support Trump's 'Make American Shipbuilding Great Again" initiative as part of its tariffs talk with the White House. Duckworth said she had earlier conversations with Hyundai Heavy Industries 'about them actually buying into US shipyards on US soil". This month, China formed the world's biggest shipbuilding company by merging two state-owned shipbuilders. The combined entity China State Shipbuilding Corporation produces Chinese navy's combat vessels from aircraft carriers to nuclear submarines. It commands 21.5 per cent of global shipbuilding market.
