Sacked Channel Nine star Alex Cullen primed for shock new career move as he's scouted by rival network

Daily Mail02-05-2025

Sacked Channel Nine star Alex Cullen is set to make a shock career move, three months after the Today show presenter was axed from the network.
In January, Cullen was fired from Channel Nine after he accepted a $50,000 gift from The Block billionaire Adrian Portelli for calling him 'McLaren Man' live on air.
Cullen, 44, is now in line to host a new afternoon news program on Channel Seven, according to news.com.au.
The Seven Network plan to air the show before the Larry Emdur-hosted game show The Chase, in a bid to increase ratings.
Cullen's representatives are in talks with Seven to sign him, which would be a return for the veteran sports journalist who was a presenter on their current affairs program Sunday Night from 2010 - 2019.
He has been rumoured to be making the move since March when Seven West Media's The Nightly marked a year of its existence as the country's favourite PDF newspaper with a star-studded soiree at the Sydney Opera House.
Cullen attended the star-studded event, hinting at a potential move to his former employer.
It follows reports that Cullen was axed from the Nine Network after he accepted $50,000 from Portelli.
The Today presenter was given the sizeable sum after he was the first media personality to use Portelli's self-proclaimed nickname 'McLaren Man' live on air - sparking a firestorm.
Days later, Today host Karl Stefanovic announced that Cullen had left the network.
'As most of you are well aware, our colleague Alex Cullen has not been on air with us this past week,' a solemn Stefanovic told viewers at the time.
'There has been widespread reporting on the circumstances surrounding this, what I can say is that last night, Alex and Nine agreed that he would finish with the network.
'Alex has, of course, been part of the Today family for five years now, he's always ready with a smile and a laugh and without hesitation speaking for all of us here, we can say that we are going to miss him terribly, for sure.
'A terrific fella, what you see is what you get and he has been a great mate to all of us over these years and we wish Alex, his wife Bonnie and his beautiful kids all the very best for the future.'
A Nine spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia: 'Nine has agreed with Today presenter and journalist Alex Cullen that he will finish with the network following a review into a recent incident.'
The scandal kicked off when Portelli had grown tired of his long-used nickname 'Mr Lambo' and offered the cash reward to the first person to use his new moniker on air, with Cullen obliging on the Today show.
The Block entrepreneur then posted what appeared to be a bank transfer of $50,000 to the presenter on Instagram.
Accepting cash, gifts or benefits to undermine journalistic independence, and improperly using a journalistic position for personal gain, are both breaches of the journalism code of ethics as defined by the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance union.
The ill-advised stunt led to Cullen being suspended by Nine and he did not appear on the show while the network investigated the payment.
Nine's parting of ways with Cullen went ahead despite Portelli's claim that Cullen intended the money to be paid to charity all along.
Network insiders also told Daily Mail Australia that the stunt could have been beneficial for the network and Portelli, if Cullen had advised the promoter that, as a journalist, he was unable to accept any payment for making the comment on-air.
Portelli first received the unwanted nickname 'Mr Lambo' after turning up to a 2022 auction of popular house makeover show The Block in a yellow Lamborghini.

MMA legend Conor had been partying in Lineker's Ocean Beach club earlier in the night before moving to the VIP section of Pacha. Wayne's post, to his one million followers, said: 'Thought about this post a lot. 'This is my very close friend who has worked at Ocean for eight years, he has the most special heart and in all of the years that I've known him he has never raised his voice once. 'He took two punches from Conor McGregor in Pacha for absolutely no reason. 'Let me introduce you to Joe Gooomez (sic). He took the punches like a champion. 'I've since deleted my post of Conor at Ocean on Sunday. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. 'We at Ocean Beach Ibiza will always put our family first #wearefamily.' One of Joe's pals, who was in the club during the bust-up, told The Sun: "He has worked with Wayne for a long time and Wayne is very loyal to his staff. "Conor had a great deal at Ocean - he got a table and drinks for free. Now that benefit may well be taken away. "Joe's not said anything about pressing charges or making a formal complaint to the police. "He had some time off booked after the incident anyway, but Wayne has been very good at handling it. "Joe's fine and there was no injury from the punches. It was obviously a shock, and he feels he was in the wrong place at the wrong time." Earlier in the evening, the combat sports legend was pictured with glamour model Katie Price at Lineker's club. Taking to Instagram, he was seen puffing on a cigar while wearing red shorts, a sun hat and sunglasses while playing up to the crowd. Price, 47, reshared the story to her own Instagram page with the caption: "You legend," after McGregor tagged her in his own story and said: "Forever". Spurs ace Kevin Danso also shared a snap of himself with the MMA fighter. The Sun's exclusive footage first showed how McGregor was talking to a man on the exclusive club's dancefloor before putting his arm around his shoulders from a platform above. After the pair chat for less than ten seconds, McGregor strikes the man, who appears to be Mr Gomez, next to his pal with his left hand. The first punch failed to cleanly connect, but less than a second later, the "Notorious" lands a clean left hook as the startled party-goer falls to the floor. McGregor, wearing a black and white shirt and tight white trousers, is then shielded from other club-goers by his own friends, who stormed the booth he was standing in. Revellers in the nightclub revealed that after the bizarre scrap, the man punched by McGregor was thrown out, while the Irish fighter kept drinking. One told The Sun: 'Clearly something's been said to annoy him and he's reacted very badly. 'The guy seemed to fall to the floor, and his mates came to pick him up and get him away. 'There [didn't appear to be any] consequences for Conor, but the guy he punched was taken away and I didn't see him again.' 11 Conor McGregor is no stranger to the Ibiza party scene 11 After the bizarre scrap, the man punched by McGregor was thrown out Credit: The Sun 11 The brawl happened just before 6am Credit: The Sun The short but violent scrap unfolded at 5:53am after McGregor, who hasn't fought since 2021, had spent the night partying with his huge entourage. Another club-goer said: "He had his arm around someone who looked like his mate. 'Someone came up to them and when Conor hit him, about five people fell to the floor as the guy stumbled back. "It was a bit like bowling pins, but the guy was really shaken by the hits. "About a minute later, the bouncers came and got him on the back and took him out of the club, because he had annoyed Conor. "It was right before close anyway. There was no messing around, they just removed him. "Conor left through the garden a bit later, he didn't look very happy that they got into a fight." Rashford transfer latest as Liverpool star trumps him and Newcastle face issue

Marcus Rashford looks to be on the move from Old Trafford this summer after a stellar loan spell at Aston Villa, with the likes of Barcelona and Newcastle being linked with the forward as of late Marcus Rashford's future at Manchester United remains uncertain for 2025/26 as the summer transfer window reopens. The forward fell out of favour in the Red Devils starting XI when Ruben Amorim arrived at Old Trafford in November after the dismissal of Erik ten Hag. And as a result, he was sent out on loan to Aston Villa for the second half of the season, writing on Instagram at the time: "I would like to thank Manchester United and Aston Villa for making this loan deal happen. I was lucky to have a few clubs approach me but Aston Villa was an easy decision - I really admire the way that Aston Villa have been playing this season, and the manager's ambitions. ‌ "I just want to play football and am excited to get started. I wish everyone at Manchester United all the best for the rest of the season." ‌ While Rashford impressed at Villa Park under the tutelage of Unai Emery - scoring four goals and providing six assists in 17 games - it seems unlikely at present that the club will exercise their £40million option to buy him permanently. As a result, Rashford is set to return to Old Trafford, although it is unlikely that he will work his way back into the team under Amorim. As he is under contract until 2028, the price will ultimately have to be right for Rashford to be given permission to leave the Red Devils. With an interesting summer transfer window in full effect, here's the latest on Rashford's situation - including all of the teams that he has been linked with a move to ahead of 2025/26... Aston Villa unlikely to sign Rashford While Villa hold a £40m option to buy Rashford after his loan spell, they do not hold first refusal on him should another club come and match that offer. Meanwhile, with Rashford looking to find his way back into the England squad under Thomas Tuchel, he will hope to play Champions League football in 2025/26 - something he will not be able to do with the Villains, and as a result, he may choose to give other elite clubs priority. Meanwhile at the end of the season, Rashford took to Instagram to write a heart-felt message which came across as more of a farewell than an 'I'll see you again soon.' He wrote: "Just a message of thanks to everyone here at Villa for what has (injury aside) been an incredible few months for me. "It is a really special club and I appreciated the way Villa fans embraced me with open arms from 1st minute on the pitch. Manager, team, and coaching staff have all been brilliant. I know it is a huge disappointment not to have made the Champions League place which everyone worked so hard all season for but I know this club and team will come back stronger." ‌ Barcelona prefer other options While it has been reported that Rashford is currently holding out hope for a move to Barcelona, the likelihood of a transfer coming to fruition seems to be getting slimmer by the day. The English international has already reportedly announced that he's willing to take a pay cut from his current £350,000-per-week deal to play for the Catalan giants, however, it appears as though Barca have had their heads turned by other players elsewhere. It is understood that Barcelona's sporting director, Deco, recently made his way to meet with Athletic Club's Nico Williams after holding talks with the left-winger's agent. It is said that the 22-year-old Spaniard is keen on joining the La Liga giants this summer, and Barca could utilise a relatively cheap £48.1m release clause to secure the star. ‌ With five goals and five assists this season, Williams has proven himself at the highest level of Spanish football - but Barcelona have been warned that they will have to sell players to get a deal over the line due to financial stipulations. La Liga president Javier Tebas recently said of the club: "They don't yet meet the requirements to sign freely, they can't sign yet under the 1:1 rule. If they want Nico, they will have to sell and adjust their accounts a lot." Elsewhere, it is said that Barcelona are also interested in acquiring the services of Liverpool sensation Luis Diaz, who scored 13 goals and provided seven assists this season to excel in the Premier League. However, with a valuation of around £59m at present according to Transfermarkt, a deal may come as a little too rich for Deco's liking. With regards to Rashford, it is reported that Barcelona would be looking to secure a loan with an option to buy, but if United are only looking for an immediate permanent transfer, he may need to reassess his options. ‌ Newcastle United offer Rashford an escape While Newcastle United are currently content with Alexander Isak up top, it is reported that the Magpies are willing to table an offer to save Rashford from his current tribulations in the north west, as Eddie Howe sees him as the perfect player to rotate with the £160m Swedish star. Newcastle are reportedly prepared to shell out as much as £40m to secure Rashford this summer, but it is said that he is likely to reject any advances from the Tyneside-based team as he continues to hold out for a move to Barca. Given that Newcastle managed a fourth-place finish in the Premier League this season, the side will once again compete in the Champions League in 2025/26 - something that may help turn the head of Rashford ever so slightly.
