Raul Jimenez pays emotional Diogo Jota tribute before lifting major trophy

Daily Mirror13 hours ago
Raul Jimenez paid an emotional tribute to his former Wolves teammate Diogo Jota as he helped Mexico win the Gold Cup. The Central American side took on the USA in the final on Sunday evening.
Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards had given Mauricio Pochettino's side an early lead, only for Raul Jimenez to equalise. West Ham defender Edson Alvarez sealed victory in the 77th minute to secure Mexico's tenth title in all.
And it was an especially emotional occasion for Jimenez, who made sure to pay tribute to his friend Jota - who died alongside his brother in a devastating car crash in Spain last week. Before the game, Jimenez had walked out onto the pitch wearing a Mexico shirt with Jota's name and number on the back.
And once he scored, he also made sure to emulate his former teammate as he copied his trademark gaming celebration as he sat down with his legs crossed and pretended to hold a controller. Jimenez's latest tribute comes just days after he penned an emotional message to the Liverpool forward.
He wrote: 'It's hard to process this kind of news - I still can't believe it. An incredible team-mate, a friend, and above all, a great father. Thank you for everything, my friend. We'll always remember you. Sending a hug to heaven.'
Jimenez is far from the only former Wolves star to have paid tribute to Jota. Midfielder Ruben Neves also wrote an emotional message on social media.
He said: 'Bug, wherever you are I know you will read this, we were never this lame and I may regret it now a little, but you know what you mean to me as much as I know what I am to you.
'More than a friendship, we're family, and we won't stop it just because now you decided to sign a contract a little further away from us! When I go to the selection, you'll still be next to me at the dinner table, on the bus, on the plane... you'll always be there with me as always.

'Let's keep laughing, making plans, sharing our life with each other. I'm going to make sure you're always present and I'll make sure that your loved ones never lack anything while you're there, far away but thinking of us, waiting for us.
'Life has brought us together and now it can't tear us apart. We've achieved some great things together, we still have a lot to go, I know we can. From today on, you will enter the field with me and we will follow our path together, on the stage where we met. Diogoal, you are my favorite lemonade!!'
Neves was also consoled by his teammates as he became overwhelmed with emotion during a minute's silence at the Club World Cup in the USA. The former Wolves star also attended the funeral of Jota and his brother over the weekend.

Joao Pedro insists he's ready to rumble as Chelsea take on Fluminense in Club World Cup semi-final set to feature legendary boxing announcer

It is believed FIFA have hired Michael Buffer — the legendary ring announcer now aged 80 — to perform the Chelsea and Fluminense players' walk-ons in New Jersey today. The American is set to lend his voice to the Club World Cup 's semi-finals and final, and his presence will be particularly fitting for Joao Pedro after Chelsea's new striker revealed he is ready to rumble. After discussing the training ground bust-up he had with Jan Paul van Hecke at Brighton — an altercation which meant he missed the end of last season — the 23-year-old said he was itching to start up front ahead of Nicolas Jackson, with Liam Delap suspended. He may have been on holiday in Brazil last week, but he took his personal trainer with him, knowing that Brighton might sell for £55million. Now, he may face former club Fluminense. 'I knew Chelsea had an interest in me, so that's why I was training harder,' Joao Pedro said. 'Imagine if I didn't train and Chelsea called me to come. I made my debut (versus Palmeiras in the quarter-finals) and I think I showed I am ready. 'If I'm going to start or not, it's not my decision, but I will try to improve, be ready for Enzo (manager Maresca)and if he needs me, we will see. 'My dream was always to play for a big club and win trophies. Chelsea have a great team, a young team, and that's why I came here.' On his scrap with Van Hecke, Joao Pedro said: 'The people who know me know my character, but when two players want to win, these things happen. This is normal. But I now play for Chelsea, so I just want to talk about Chelsea.' Fluminense have been the Club World Cup's ugly ducklings. They are so much the antithesis of Chelsea's youthfulness that even Maresca might still get a game for the Brazilians at the age of 45 — and that is only a slight exaggeration. Just look at their last line-up for the match against Al Hilal. In goal was Fabio, aged 44. Diego Maradona was still playing when he began his professional career. Thiago Silva, 40, marshalled their three-man defence, flanked by two defenders aged 25 and 28. On their right wing was Samuel Xavier, 35. On their left, Gabriel Fuentes, 28. Their striker was German Cano, 37, and they brought some other thirty-somethings off the bench. The average age of Fluminense's team at the Club World Cup has been 31 years and 12 days, making them the oldest side at the tournament. Chelsea have averaged 24 years and 124 days by comparison. Despite that, Maresca insisted this semi-final is not theirs to lose, saying: 'I don't think we are favourites. There are no favourites. We already had one entire season being the youngest team in the Premier League. This will be a good test. Joao is ready, but we also have Nico.' It will be a nice reunion for Silva whose teenage sons, Iago and Isago, are in Chelsea's academy. Despite now living in Brazil, he visits Cobham often and occasionally watches first-team training under Maresca with an eye to a move into coaching. 'I'm not a spy,' Silva joked. 'I don't know Maresca that well, but I do know a lot of players there. I talk to them practically every week. 'It's going to be a special day for me, but it will be even more special if we win. 'It will be special if I can eliminate Chelsea, with all the love I have for them.' Fluminense may be older, wiser and better suited to Chelsea's 'Pensioners' nickname. But they should know that if Joao Pedro is thrown in to face them today he will fight, even if they did give him his start in professional football.

Enzo Maresca confident Chelsea can ‘find solutions' to selection issues

Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca is confident he will find the right answers to the selection problems he is facing for their Club World Cup semi-final. The Blues take on Brazilian side Fluminense in New York on Tuesday for a place in Sunday's final. Striker Liam Delap and defender Levi Colwill are both suspended after receiving their second bookings of the tournament in the quarter-final win against Palmeiras. Midfielder Romeo Lavia has not recovered from a muscular problem and the fitness of captain Reece James continues to be monitored after a knock. Speaking at his pre-match press conference at the MetLife Stadium, Maresca said: 'I think in the last game we had Romeo out, Moi (Caicedo) out, Reece out and we found a solution with Andrey (Santos) playing in midfield. 'Now with Levi and Liam out, we will find different solutions.' Midfielder Moises Caicedo is available again after serving a ban and Nicolas Jackson and new signing Joao Pedro, who made his debut off the bench against Palmeiras, are competing to start up front. Maresca said: 'Romeo is training already. Unfortunately, though, he is not training with the team, so he is not ready for tomorrow. 'But Joao Pedro is ready and we also have Nico so, for sure, we will find a solution.' Chelsea are coming to the end of a long season that they began last August, whilst Fluminense are just 11 games into their Brazilian league campaign. Maresca said: 'In this tournament we have two different situations. 'How many games have the Brazilians played this season? We will have played 63 times. 'European teams come to this competition in a different way from the teams of the Brazil or the teams of South America, but the desire we have to win is the same.'
