
God Only Knows what modern music would be without Beach Boy Brian Wilson
I was about five and the Beach Boys were on TV, their headphones on, singing Barbara Ann around a mic. The harmonies were exquisite, unique. If I could sing around a mic like that for the rest of my life, I thought, I'd be happy forever.
Beach Boy Brian meant the world to me, so it was a hard blow to hear of his death on Wednesday, especially so soon after another musical titan, Sly Stone. What he leaves behind is the legacy of his work, the heart and soul he put into it, songs that 'make people feel something inside', as Wilson said himself.
That Barbara Ann moment was just the beginning of a lifelong musical love affair with Wilson.
I got into the Beach Boys big time - I loved the early California surf stuff like Help Me Rhonda and Little Deuce Coupe, and I Get Around is the prototype punk song. In My Room is a swirly ballad, loved by Kurt Cobain.
Yet it wasn't until I discovered Pet Sounds that I fully realised the depth of Wilson's genius. I credit Lewis Clohessy for introducing me to it. He's my friend Helen's dad and one of the nation's great culture vultures.
Lewis knew I loved the Pixies and the Beatles and he said to me: 'Well, if you like both of those, you must listen to Pet Sounds.' When Paul McCartney said it inspired Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club, everyone took notice. God Only Knows is on it, which Macca called "the best song ever written".
While much is made of Wilson's early influences such as Bach, Mozart, Gershwin and Bernstein, it was the Phil Spector production sound that was the most influential of all.
Musically, it's obviously a triumph with its heavy-reverb combination of sound and layered vocals, inspired by Brian's favourite song Be My Baby by the Ronettes, which he used to listen to every day.
Or: 'EVERY. DAY.' as his daughter Carnie pointedly recalled, in the documentary of his life I Just Wasn't Made For These Times, named after the track that sums up Brian more than any other.
But it's the lyrics that get me: Brian Wilson is still the songwriter I most relate to, which sometimes feels like a strange thing to say, considering serious mental health conditions such as bipolar and schizo-affective disorder. He speaks to me like no-one else.
I loved Brian's obsessions; the involved way he discussed music; his vulnerability; the funny way he had of talking out of the side of his mouth. He is the greatest influence on modern music today, inspiring bands such as the Ramones, The Pixies, the B52s, Weezer, Nirvana, even Fontaines DC.
My favourite song is actually one of Brian's favourites too - Do It Again, from their 1969 album 20/20. I haven't even got to discussing their brilliant 1970's era, such as the brilliant Holland (music guru Dave Fanning's top choice) and Surf's Up.
It was a dream come true when I interviewed Brian in 2018. He had cognitive issues, yet he was a fine conversationalist once the topic stayed on music. I still relish how he described I Get Around as "a rock n'roll salad".
The last word will go to the great Tom Petty, who said of him: 'I think I would put Brian Wilson up there with any composer. I don't think you'd be out of line comparing him to Beethoven. His music is probably as good as any you could make.'

‘Fab weekend' planned as Dublin celebrates ties with Liverpool and The Beatles
CELEBRATIONS will take place this month to mark the connection between Dublin city and The Beatles. Dublin City Council has announced The Beatles Weekend, an inaugural celebration of the fab four - who hailed from Liverpool but all had Irish connections - which will take place later this month. "This really is going to be a fab weekend and comes to us with every good wish from our twin sister city of Liverpool and their world-renowned Cavern Club who also celebrate their annual international Beatles week at the same time,' Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Ray McAdam said. 'I want to thank my predecessor as Lord Mayor Coouncillor Emma Blain,' he added. 'Her official engagement with Liverpool in spring this year, including visiting Rice Lane Primary School in the Penny Lane ward, ensured we revitalise our long-standing twinning relationship with the great city of Liverpool.' Dublin City Council has announced its inaugural Beatles Weekend will take place this month The planned event, which takes place from August 22 to 24, will also mark the historic connections between the Irish capital, and the city of Liverpool in north west England. 'We share deep and affectionate family and social relations over many generations with Liverpool,' Cllr McAdam said. Jon Keats, The Cavern Club's Director of Operations and Music said the new event supports their own ethos of 'nurturing' the next generation of musical artists. "The Beatles, Liverpool and the Cavern Club will be forever connected, as indeed will Liverpool's relationship with our neighbours over in Dublin,' Mr Keats said. 'The Cavern today is a place of pilgrimage for Beatle fans and indeed, music fans, from all over the world and arguably the place people feel closest to these four lads from Liverpool,' he added. 'Our role as custodians of this unique venue, is to protect this musical and cultural heritage, whilst nurturing and supporting the next generations of artists. The Beatles famously played at Dublin's Adelphi on Abbey Street in 1963 and the Council has planned music and dance events at Wigwam on Middle Abbey Street, as well as family-friendly activities in Temple Bar's Meeting House Square and Parliament Street during their Beatles weekend. Kevin McManus, Head of UNESCO City of Music at Culture Liverpool, said the Dublin event marks the shared Irish heritage of the fab four. The untold story of Mona and Mimi — and The Beatles connection
A POWERFUL new stage play imagining an untold chapter in Beatles folklore will premiere in Liverpool this September, bringing two formidable Irish-connected women centre stage. The writer — Catherine Leen Mona & Mimi, written by Dublin/Kerry playwright Catherine Leen, explores a fictional meeting between Mona Best, mother of Beatles drummer Pete Best, and Mimi Smith, the stern aunt who raised John Lennon. Set in December 1961—just before the band signed their first major recording contract—the play finds the women clashing over music, morality and motherhood, but slowly discovering unexpected common ground. With echoes of a changing Britain, the 70-minute drama unfolds 'between the end of the Chatterley ban and the Beatles' first LP,' capturing the tension and possibility of a world on the brink of cultural revolution. Directed by Nick Bagnall (Shakespeare's Globe, Everyman & Playhouse), the production stars Fiona Boylan (Line of Duty, Coronation Street) as the unconventional, entrepreneurial Mona, and Meriel Scholfield (The Young Vic, Last Tango in Halifax) as the formidable and uncompromising Mimi. Noah Fox (Casualty) also features as Neil. Playwright Catherine Leen, who is based in Liverpool and volunteers with the Liverpool Irish Festival, says the play is a tribute to 'sacrifice, resilience, and the hidden influence of women behind the scenes of history's biggest cultural shifts.' She previously worked on the podcast There's a Lot I Haven't Asked and is a member of the Creative Collective of the Irish Diaspora (CCEN). Fiona Boylan (Mona) Mona Best Mona Best was the fiercely independent mother of Pete Best, the Beatles' original drummer. Born in Delhi to an Irish father and English mother, she was the youngest of four siblings, the youngest of four children: Brian, Patrick and Aileen. She later settled in Liverpool, where she opened The Casbah Coffee Club in the cellar of her home—an iconic early venue for the Beatles. Mona was ambitious, unconventional, and deeply invested in her son's musical career. She often acted as an informal manager, providing rehearsal space, bookings, and encouragement. Though sometimes sidelined in official histories, Mona played a crucial role in shaping the Merseybeat scene and nurturing the band that would become the Beatles. Meriel Scholfield (Mimi) Mimi Smith Mary Elizabeth 'Mimi' Smith was the formidable aunt and legal guardian of John Lennon. A nurse by profession, she raised Lennon in the genteel surroundings of Mendips on Menlove Avenue, believing in discipline, education, and proper standards. She had distant Irish roots as well, in Omagh Co. Tyrone. Dismissive of rock'n'roll and wary of John's musical ambitions, she once famously told him, 'The guitar's all right, John, but you'll never make a living at it.' Yet despite her strictness, she remained a constant, anchoring presence in his life. Mimi's influence—protective, controlling, and deeply rooted in middle-class propriety—left an indelible mark on Lennon's personality and early worldview. Dublin City Council launches 'The Beatles Weekend'
Dublin's ties with Liverpool will be celebrated with the city's first ever 'The Beatles Weekend' later this month. The inaugural celebration of The Fab Four will take place from 22-24 August at a number of venues across the capital. The Lord Mayor of Dublin Councillor Ray McAdam said: "We have a long-standing twinning relationship with the great city of Liverpool, sharing deep and affectionate family and social relations over many generations. "This weekend of events will continue to strengthen and broaden our cities' social, cultural and economic relations." The Beatles famously played in Dublin in 1963 at the Adelphi on Abbey Street.
