BYD's latest challenge to Tesla is a drone on the roof

BYD unveiled a new vehicle-mounted drone for its EVs on Sunday.
The Lingyuan drone takes off from a retractable hanger and travels up to 33 miles an hour.
Chinese EV makers are locked in a tech arms race as they try to win customers with futuristic features.
BYD's latest trick for taking on Tesla in China's brutally competitive auto market is built-in drones.
The Chinese EV giant unveiled a vehicle-mounted drone system on Sunday, allowing drivers to take sweeping panoramic videos.
The Lingyuan drone system, which BYD developed with Chinese drone maker DJI, will be offered on models as a 16,000 yuan ($2,200) optional extra.
The drones are housed in a roof compartment, can take off and land from a moving car and follow the vehicle at speeds of up to 33 miles an hour.
BYD's premium Yangwang U8 SUV, which costs about $150,000, already includes an onboard drone, but Lingyuan will add the feature to more affordable vehicles.
The first models to get the system include BYD's $27,000 Sealion 07 DM-i hybrid and $40,000 Tang L electric SUV.
Drones are the latest high-tech extra offered by a Chinese automaker to make their cars stand out in the country's intensely competitive auto industry.
While its rivals have offered features such as AI-assisted parking and the ability to voice-control household appliances, BYD has led the way when it comes to smart features.
The company recently showed off a supercar that can "jump" over potholes, and last month announced that it would install advanced "God's Eye" self-driving technology in all its EVs, including the $9,500 Seagull, at no extra cost.
Weeks later, Tesla rolled out its own self-driving tech to some drivers in China. Elon Musk's automaker, which is battling BYD for global EV dominance, offers Chinese drivers self-driving features for $8,800 extra — only slightly less than the cost of BYD's Seagull.
BYD sales are booming following strong demand for its affordable EVs and hybrids. It sold 318,000 vehicles in February, up 161% on the same month last year, with a record 67,000 sales outside China.

Bessent Returns to Washington as US-China Talks Stretch On

(Bloomberg) — SUS Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent departed trade talks with China late Tuesday in London, as delegations continued to negotiate over key tech and industrial exports and deescalating their trade war. Trump's Military Parade Has Washington Bracing for Tanks and Weaponry NY Long Island Rail Service Resumes After Grand Central Fire NYC Mayoral Candidates All Agree on Building More Housing. But Where? Senator Calls for Closing Troubled ICE Detention Facility in New Mexico California Pitches Emergency Loans for LA, Local Transit Systems Bessent told reporters he had to return to Washington in order to testify before Congress. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer planned to continue discussions with their Chinese counterparts 'as needed,' Bessent said. 'We have had two days of productive talks, they are ongoing,' the Treasury secretary said before leaving Lancaster House, a Georgian-era mansion near Buckingham Palace serving as the meeting site. Financial markets were closely watching Tuesday as the world's largest economies continued talks over the terms of their tariff truce brokered last month. US stocks rose to session highs after Lutnick said earlier the talks were 'going really, really well.' The teams, which had been led by Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, were still holding discussions Tuesday night in order to iron out technical details, according to a Treasury official. The key issue this week is re-establishing terms of an agreement reached in Geneva last month, in which the US understood that China would allow more rare earth shipments to reach American customers. The Trump administration accused Beijing of moving too slowly, which threatened shortages in domestic manufacturing sectors. In return, the Trump administration is prepared to remove a recent spate of measures targeting chip design software, jet engine parts, chemicals and nuclear materials, people familiar with the matter said. Many of those actions were taken in the past few weeks as tensions flared between the US and China. 'Win by China' 'A US decision to roll back some portion of the technology controls would very much be viewed as a win by China,' said Dexter Roberts, nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council's Global China Hub, adding that the possibility of unwinding 'any controls' seemed 'pretty much unthinkable' until recently. A month ago Beijing and Washington agreed to a 90-day truce through mid-August in their crippling tariffs to allow time to resolve many of their trade disagreements — from tariffs to export controls. Lancaster House carries historical significance. It has hosted major addresses by UK prime ministers, speeches by central bank governors and parties for Britain's royal family. At the same time, Trump's trade team is scrambling to secure bilateral deals with India, Japan, South Korea and several other countries that are racing to do so before July 9, when the US president's so-called reciprocal tariffs rise from the current 10% baseline to much higher levels customized for each trading partner. Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday held his first phone conversation with South Korea's newly elected President Lee Jae-myung and called for cooperation to safeguard multilateralism and free trade. 'We should strengthen bilateral cooperation and multilateral coordination, jointly safeguard multilateralism and free trade, and ensure the stability and smoothness of global and regional industrial chains and supply chains,' Xi said, according to the CCTV report. —With assistance from Colum Murphy and Stephanie Lai. Video shows Tesla robotaxi on the streets of Austin without a human driver

A Tesla robotaxi driving without a human behind the wheel has been spotted on the streets of Austin, Texas, according to a video posted on X on Tuesday and reshared by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, as the company prepares to launch a highly anticipated robotaxi service as soon as this week. The 10-second video showed the Tesla slowly turning left off an avenue in the state capital, as two pedestrians walk in a crosswalk just ahead. No one appeared to be in the driver's seat, but someone appeared to be in the front passenger's seat, while the rear windows were tinted. On the vehicle's side was a logo with the word 'Robotaxi.' The video appeared to be the first confirmation of Musk's statement last month that Tesla had begun testing cars on Austin public streets with no one in the driver's seat. Musk reshared the video Tuesday on X, writing: 'Beautifully simple design.' Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the video. The account that posted the video did not immediately respond to a request for more information. Tesla is scheduled to launch its service as soon as Thursday, according to Bloomberg News. Tesla is trying to compete with Google spinoff Waymo, which has been steadily growing its robotaxi service in four cities so far: Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Francisco. The service is similar to ride-hailing apps such as Uber or Lyft but without a human behind the wheel. A year ago, Waymo made its service available to anyone in San Francisco who has its app. Three other tech startups are testing autonomous vehicles in Austin, according to a city government website: Zoox, a subsidiary of Amazon; Volkswagen ADMT; and AVRide, a spinoff of Yandex. Tesla's service will be tiny at first, starting with possibly 10 vehicles in its first week, Musk told CNBC in an interview last month. Musk predicted Tuesday, though, that autonomous cars would soon become very common. 'The streets will change very rapidly,' he posted on X. Musk is relying on the planned robotaxi service to try to turn Tesla around. The electric automaker's sales have faltered over the past year as Musk veered into politics and supported President Donald Trump's return to the White House, angering many Tesla owners. Tesla said its profits fell 71% during the first three months of the year. Responding to a question from a user on X, Musk said that the software in the robotaxi test vehicles is new and not the same as the software in regular Tesla vehicles. He said the software 'still requires a lot of polishing.' This article was originally published on

Analysts react to US-China trade agreement

SINGAPORE (Reuters) -U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said that a trade framework and implementation plan agreed with China in London should result in restrictions on rare earths and magnets being resolved. China's Vice Commerce Minister Li Chenggang said earlier the two teams had agreed on implementing their Geneva consensus and would take the agreed framework back to their leaders. QUOTES: CHRIS WESTON, HEAD OF RESEARCH, PEPPERSTONE, MELBOURNE: "The devil will be in the details but the lack of reaction suggests this outcome fully expected. "While clearly a positive outcome, the lack of reaction in S&P500 futures, and the incremental moves seen in CNH or AUD, suggests achieving the framework on the Geneva agreement was fully expected – the details matter, especially around the degree of rare earths bound for the US, and the subsequent freedom for US produced chips to head East, but for now as long as the headlines of talks between the two parties remain constructive, risk assets should remain supported. "The reaction in Chinese equities could be telling and I suspect US equity futures will track developments here closely today."
