I commend the tireless efforts of our health officials and the enthusiastic participation of the people of Ludhiana, which led to the recent recognition by the health minister. However, we must not become complacent. This awareness rally is a step toward further strengthening our community's understanding of dengue and the simple yet effective measures we can all take to protect ourselves and our families.'
Dr Kaur further emphasised the importance of continuous vigilance and community action. She urged everyone to recognise that dengue is preventable and collective efforts can significantly reduce its impact. She also highlighted the national theme for dengue prevention: 'Check, Clean, Cover – Steps to Defeat Dengue.' This message encourages all individuals to regularly check their surroundings for stagnant water, clean potential mosquito breeding sites, and cover water containers to prevent mosquito access.

Ludhiana: Dengue larvae found in 25 nurseries during health dept check
Dengue larvae have been detected in 25 nurseries in Ludhiana during a special inspection drive carried out by the district health department on Friday. 'Such negligence creates ideal conditions for mosquitoes to breed and can lead to serious dengue outbreaks,' he added. The health department issued on-the-spot instructions to nursery owners, asking them to avoid water accumulation in pots and trays and to ensure regular weekly checks. Written notices were served to the nurseries where larvae were found, warning that repeat violations would invite legal action under the Epidemic Diseases Act. Officials also appealed to all residents to check their rooftops, flower pots, water coolers, containers, and surrounding areas every Friday. The department stressed that only through regular cleanliness and public cooperation can dengue be effectively prevented. Civil surgeon Dr Ramandeep Kaur said that under this weekly campaign, inspections are carried out every Friday to identify and eliminate potential dengue breeding sites. 'Dengue can only be eliminated from its roots not just through the efforts of the health department, but with the active support of the public,' she said.

'The children should be provided shelter, food, healthcare, and education under Project Jeevanjyot-2: Save the Childhood, a state initiative to eliminate child begging,' she added. The minister has also ordered officials across all districts of Punjab to treat such cases with utmost seriousness and to initiate similar rescue and rehabilitation campaigns for children found begging in their respective regions. 'If any individual or group is found forcing children to beg, strict legal action will be taken against them,' Kaur said, highlighting the importance of coordinated action involving police, health, education and municipal authorities to ensure effective rehabilitation. Ludhiana: Dengue larvae detected in 23 schools, 61 houses
Dengue larvae have been found in 23 schools and 61 houses during a large-scale inspection drive conducted by the health department across Ludhiana district, officials said. The week-long campaign, led by 521 health teams, covered 851 schools and 29,747 houses. In total, 51,445 water-holding containers were inspected, of which 147 were found having dengue mosquito larvae. This underlines the urgent need for greater public awareness and participation. Dengue cannot be prevented by government initiatives alone. It requires consistent community action.' Immediate larvicide spraying was carried out in all locations where larvae were found, and strict cleanliness advisories were issued to the institutions and residents concerned. The drive is part of the health department's ongoing campaign titled 'Har Shukravaar – Dengue Te Vaar' (Every Friday – fight dengue), which urges citizens, schools, and offices to dedicate every Friday to cleaning their premises and eliminating stagnant water sources. District epidemiologist Dr Sheetal Narang said, 'The dengue mosquito breeds in clean, stagnant water and bites during the daytime. Cleaning all water sources at least once a week is essential. During this campaign, teams not only conducted inspections but also provided door-to-door awareness about prevention practices. Awareness remains the most powerful tool.'
