Copies of world's first comic found in Barras donated to Glasgow

It might never have happened at all were it not for a lucky find at the Barras, explains the man who has generously donated his volume of The Glasgow Looking Glass to the Mitchell Library.
Businessman Dr John Watson, former managing director of famous city printing firm John Watson & Co, is a direct descendant of the John Watson who printed the first editions of this famous comic.

After reading the Glasgow Times story about the 200th anniversary of the publication, he decided to donate the bound volume of issues to the city.
John explains: 'The significance of the Glasgow Looking Glass cannot be underestimated.
'It was, of course, the first mass market satirical publication to use illustrations to tell stories and therefore has a unique place in the history of comics.'
He adds: 'And it was seemingly lost in time, lying as it was among dusty folios at The Barras market.'

It was discovered by Iain Milne, retired rugby internationalist and former sales director of Sun Chemicals, which supplied John Watson & Co with ink over many years.
Startled by the find, Iain called John and handed it over to him for safekeeping.
John adds: 'I was delighted to receive it and I'm very grateful to Iain for finding it. I'm even more delighted to be donating it to the city in this most special year, as Glasgow celebrates its 850th anniversary.'

John, who recalls his father talking about premises in George Street, where Glasgow Looking Glass was originally printed, sold the business in 2013.
Since his retirement, he focuses on helping charities through The Watson Foundation.
He adds: 'This priceless publication remains a treasured possession - now in the safe keeping of the city - and it can be enjoyed by a modern-day audience who would like a comic glimpse into the past.'

As part of the 200th anniversary of the publication of The Glasgow Looking Glass, John handed over his compendium to Susan Taylor, Special Collections librarian.

Susan said: 'The Mitchell Library is delighted to accept this generous donation, with its unique provenance, that is, being donated by a direct descendant of the editor and printer of the Glasgow Looking Glass.
'We look forward to sharing it more widely with current and future generations.'
The hand-over was part of Glasgow through the Looking Glass, a celebration to mark the anniversary, which also included talks by Dr Irene' O'Brien, senior archivist at Glasgow City Archives, Professor Laurence Grove of the University of Glasgow and Colin Maxwell of Maximised Comics, who presented the 'new' Glasgow Looking Glass for 2025, a publication full of the same irreverence as the original.

Professor Grove said: 'Who would have believed that it's 200 years since comics were invented and they were invented in Glasgow?
'Maybe we should be giving that a little bit more attention as part of our world history. We're celebrating the 850 years of Glasgow; well, comics will last for more than 850 years to come.'
The day ended with a comic-drawing workshop run by Glasgow Life assistant Jamie Miller, after which some of the budding comic artists kindly donated their drawings to the Special Collections department.

Elis James and John Robins #463 - The Trifecta of Value, Celya AB and A Bin Bag of Marmite

There's huge news in the rural Bucks area as the Trifecta of Value begins to take shape - pending planning application rulings. It's one of many wins for John, but the spectre of the biggest loss in many a year hangs over him. But he is unwilling to reveal it in his losses column. Someone should have cottoned on to this sly behaviour by now. Away from the Ls and the Ws we go all Gallic in chatting to the wonderful Celya AB, and John introduces her by making it self-aggrandising. Exactly what Norton and Parkinson would do. Terrified Mack begs for life in brutal Emmerdale trailer as killer John strikes

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video An Emmerdale trailer has been released that shows the moment Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) learns the truth about John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth). Mackenzie was suspicious of John for quite a while, but he ignored his worries when the local medic was able to save Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb) from a deadly situation. That was orchestrated by John, by the way. Mack concluded that he judged John far too early and since then, they've been somewhat civil with each other. But everything is set to change next week. Mackenzie will make a discovery about John shortly after a huge row with Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins). We don't know what it is at the moment, but the trailer is enough to confirm that uncovering the information about John will alter everything for Mack. In the tense trailer, Mack is seen running through the woods. Eagle-eyed fans will also spot that this is the moment from Mack's flashforward clip, which aired towards the end of 2024. Mack dashes through the trees but ends up falling. Alongside these clips, we see John telling Mack that he has now 'joined up the dots'. While this is happening, Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) looks set to confront Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller). They will share a kiss on Monday, but Robert reckons that Aaron still loves him and doesn't want to leave with John. At the end of the trailer, Mackenzie is seen begging for his life as John throws a large rock above his head, presumably preparing for the moment he murders Mack. 'Guess I really am the bad guy', John says. If Mackenzie is murdered by John, it will be the first time (as far as we are aware) that he truly intends to kill someone. When Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter) was killed, John never planned for it to happen. He gave Nate some medication and he had a bad reaction to it, leading to his death. Could this be a sign that John will now become even more unhinged, ahead of his inevitable exit? Lawrence Robb, who plays Mackenzie Boyd, spoke about the rumours of Mack's death this week. When appearing on the ITV daytime show Loose Women to talk about the ongoing surrogacy storyline – that has seen Charity decide to be a surrogate for granddaughter Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill) – the awkward matter of his upcoming exit was addressed. 'I don't want to put you on the spot, but I'm going to,' asked Jane Moore. 'There's lots of rumours that Mack might be getting killed off.' Lawrence, visibly squirming, replied: 'Yeah, there are lots of rumours. And rumours they shall remain.' Quick thinking – though Denise Welch didn't look too convinced. Co-host Coleen Nolan then chimed in, asking: 'If that was the case, I'm not saying it is or it isn't, [but] do they discuss that with you straight away or about a month before it's happening?' 'It's never brutal,' he replied, being extremely cautious about his wording. 'I've always said, being in the show, I never want to be too prescriptive with it. 'I've always enjoyed doing what I'm doing. Ultimately if and when, – if, when – the time for Mack to leave comes, whether that be my choice or the writer-producers, I'll be thankful for the time that I've had.' He concluded: 'Ultimately, nobody is safe in the show. It's most dangerous village in the country.' More Trending Mack made his debut five years ago when he turned up at Butlers Farm as the long-lost younger sibling of Moira. He also swiftly embarked on a relationship with Charity, who was seeing Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick) at the time of their one night stand. In the years since, Mack has been at the centre of numerous stories, including a one night stand with Chloe Harris, which led to the birth of his son Reuben. Emmerdale's John Sugden makes twisted accusation in a bid to get rid of brother Robert ahead of exit

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) EMMERDALE'S John Sugden has made a twisted accusation against brother Robert in a bid to remove him from the village once and for all. The killer - who is played by actor Oliver Farnworth in the ITV soap - married Robert's ex-husband Aaron Dingle last year despite the obvious connection between the exes. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 2 Robert loses his temper with Harry and terrifies the kid in Emmerdale Credit: ITV 2 John arrives just in time to continue to manipulate Robert into believing he's a danger to Harry Credit: ITV John has been desperate to get rid of Robert since his release from prison, but in a way that keeps his family on side. So unable to send him back to prison for attacking him, John has come up with a new way - and used his nephew Harry for it. In today's episode John encourages Harry to play on his drums in a bid to trigger Robert's PTSD - and it works. Robert loses his temper just in time for John to swoop in and save the day and comfort Harry. The ploy, that then sees Robert convinced that he's a danger to Harry, and subsequently breaks down and decides to leave the village. Actor Ryan Hawley explains: 'John sets up a situation where Robert's left alone with Harry. 'Robert's having difficulty dealing with his his circumstances at the moment, and PTSD, and he's not sleeping very well. 'He's got a kid that, by his own admissions, he's not good at looking after. 'He has him out of necessity, while Victoria goes to work or she has to go help out a friend that's broken an arm or something, and Robert stays with him. 'John encourages him to be disruptive and to kind of trigger Robert, which he does. Robert loses his temper, and John walks in on it and sees it. Shock death rocks Emmerdale as John Sugden takes drastic action 'He uses it as a thing to gaslight Robert, to make it look like he's he's been aggressive. He says that they're all part of him being dangerous and not safe around kids and around Victoria. 'There have been some situations before where Robert's having a nightmare and Victoria comes to go and wake him, and he hits her by accident. 'John adds all that together, and he uses it to paint the picture to basically get rid of Robert. 'He visits and rubs it in his face. It's a real low point at this moment. He's had a fight with John as well, Robert's hit him over the head with a wrench, [like] what happened with Lee all those years ago. Darkest soap storylines Over the years the likes of EastEnders, Emmerdale and Coronation Street have all tried to try outdo each other with their outlandish plots in a bid to keep us tuning in each week. But here are some of the darkest that had fans in shock... EastEnders: Tony grooming Whitney (2008-2009) - Tony King first appeared in Albert Square in 2008 as the boyfriend of Bianca, played by Patsy Palmer. But it was quickly revealed he was a paedophile who had been grooming vulnerable Whitney, Bianca's adopted stepdaughter from a previous relationship, since she was 12. The shocking storyline attracted more than 200 complaints within a week of it beginning. Whitney waited until her 16th birthday to reveal the truth to a horrified Bianca, who called the police. Emmerdale: Holly's drug addiction and shock death (2010-2016) - In 2010, Holly Barton (played by Sophie Powles) became Emmerdale's first teenage drug addict. The shocking storyline saw her taking cocaine on a night out before developing a deadly heroin habit. Parents John and Moira desperately tried to help get their daughter clean but when Holly returned in 2016, following a four-year absence, she quickly relapsed. Fans were left stunned and heartbroken when distraught Moira found Holly dead in her bed from a heroin overdose. Hollyoaks: Luke's rape (2000) - Actor Gary Lucy was just 17 when he took on this groundbreaking storyline, which saw his character Luke Morgan become soap's first male rape victim. Luke had endured a long-running bullying campaign by football rival Mark Gibbs - who raped him after Luke stood up to him. Luke was left suicidal following the brutal attack, before opening up to his brother Adam. Gibbs was sentenced to eight years in prison. Gary won the Best Actor gong at the British Soap Awards in 2000 for his performance. Coronation Street: Evil Richard Hillman (2001-2003) - Just a mere mention of 'Richard Hillman' is enough to send a shiver down the spines of soap fans. He is often ranked one of the most evil soap villains and it's not hard to see why. The smooth-talking financial adviser bashed his ex-wife Patricia over the head with a shovel. In a bid to keep his mother-in-law Audrey quiet, he set fire to her house. And when Maxine caught him trying to murder Emily Bishop, he took a crowbar to her head. He made his exit from the cobbles in 2003 when he drove Gail Platt, played by Helen Worth, and her family into the canal. They survived, but he didn't. 'It's kind of a low point for Robert in that he's repeating the actions that put him in prison six years ago. John uses the situation to just really rub it in, and Robert loses it. Nuts.' But will Robert leave the village and let John win? Actor Oliver Farnworth will soon leave the soap as The Sun exclusively revealed this week.
