'Racing's Ryder Cup' - Scott revels in Ascot aura

BBC News15 hours ago

"It's such a special meeting, it's like no other week in racing - you could sort of equate it to FA Cup finals, Ryder Cups and things like that."Newmarket trainer George Scott and jockey Callum Shepherd proved a winning combination when Isle Of Jura won the Hardwicke Stakes at last year's Royal Ascot and they can't wait to get back there for this week's meeting.Scott expects to saddle nine or 10 runners from his Eve Lodge Stables yard over the course of the four days and is upbeat about the chances of more success."I'm just excited to take a bunch of horses there in this form - this is the first time we've taken a proper team," he told BBC Look East."Of course, that moment with Isle Of Jura is very special but we move on. We'll be looking to try and do it again in some capacity. As long as the horses turn up healthy, then we should be OK." Scott became a trainer 10 years ago and 2024 was his most successful to date with 48 winners at home and abroad, including Isle Of Jura's victory. It was an especially sweet moment for Shepherd, whose friend and fellow jockey Stefano Cherchi died after a fall in Australia a couple of months earlier - and who had been replaced as rider of Ambiente Friendly, which finished second, for the 2024 Derby at Epsom."It's the best moment I've ever had on a horse, the best moment I've ever had in sport," said the 27-year-old Shepherd."The buzz was unlike anything I've ever experienced and he set the narrative, set the tone for the second half of the season last year where we were just incredibly successful. That followed into the winter with success in Dubai, Bahrain, the German St Leger, to name just a few. "That day just felt like the start of something big. I can't explain how much we all enjoyed it together. It was magic."
'We understand each other'
Former public schoolboy Shepherd has a rival for sporting glory within his own family - his golfing brother Laird won the British Amateur Championship in 2021.But it is his relationship with Scott which is helping progress his career and it is one that he believes has "grown and got stronger" since they first began working together "four or five years ago"."We really do have an excellent working relationship. We've had success all over the world now and we understand each other very well," he said."He knows how I like to ride and obviously likes that. It suits our horses, suits our approach to racing. Now we don't really need to say a lot to each other before races. He knows I've done my homework and I've got to know the horses as much as I can - it works pretty well." Scott believes there is a "basis of trust" underpinning their working relationship. And he added: "We knit together nicely. We're lucky to have Callum. It's really been the perfect pair. He's on this upward trajectory for the first time, as am I, and I'm really enjoying the fact that we're doing it together."Callum's hard on himself, he's his own strongest critic and if things haven't gone to plan, if I've prepared the horse wrong or run it in the wrong race, he's not snapping back at me - and similarly, I wouldn't be too critical of him. It's a give-take type of thing."
Scott's leading contenders
Among Scott's horses for Ascot, he has high hopes for Staya in Wednesday's Queen Mary Stakes, a five-furlong race for two-year-old fillies."She's only run once and won very impressively at Yarmouth. She's by Havana Grey who's doing fantastically [at stud], especially with his two-year-olds. She's one of the favourites [for the Queen Mary], near the head of the market off one run, so we're hoping for a big run from her."He is also keen to see how Gaga Mate will fare in the Windsor Castle Stakes on the same day, having only recently joined the yard."He seems very uncomplicated. You can see with him, he's moving well. Everything's sort of straightforward with him," said Scott."The more horses go into the big meetings, the more pressure. But 10 runners spread over five days is very manageable. It's really amazing when you think about someone like Willie Mullins, who takes 50 or 60 horses to the Cheltenham Festival."Royal Ascot begins on Tuesday, when Scott hopes to have runners in the King Charles III Stakes, Wolferton Stakes and Copper House Handicap."I go into it with a lot of excitement. There's a lot of live chances," said Shepherd."I've got some good rides for other people as well, other than George, and I think the confidence you take from having been there and done it before puts you in a good position to go and do it again."And once you've done it once, you want to do it again, believe me."

Lee Carsley frustrated by missed chances in England Under-21s stalemate

Lee Carsley was frustrated by missed chances after England Under-21s were held to a 0-0 draw by Slovenia in the second game of their European Championship campaign. England could have secured their place in the knockout stage after Ethan Nwaneri and James McAtee spurned glorious opportunities and Harvey Elliott was denied by the woodwork. The reigning champions continued to push for a second win of the tournament but Slovenia goalkeeper Martin Turk denied Jack Hinshelwood in stoppage time to keep their slim hopes of qualification alive. Carsley told 'It was a very tough game. We definitely didn't underestimate Slovenia, who are a good, well-organised team. 'I definitely think we had enough chances to win, though, so the frustration is that we didn't take those opportunities. 'I expect us to be better against Germany. I think we'll need to freshen the team up. 'It's important to take into consideration their age and the amount they've played, so we'll make sure we utilise the squad.' England kept a clean sheet thanks to goalkeeper James Beadle, who was called into action on three occasions to stop Slovenia from taking the lead. The England stopper said: 'There are no easy games in this tournament and Slovenia have real quality. 'If you can't win the game don't lose it, and we move on. I'm satisfied with my personal performance, but obviously disappointed we didn't win.' Captain McAtee dragged wide from inside the area in the first half before Turk denied him straight after the break. The 22-year-old is hoping England can top the group with victory over Germany. He said: 'I'm a bit annoyed at myself for the chances I missed, but the same goes for the rest of the lads. 'We're disappointed with the result, but it's a point and we've got another game coming up soon, so we'll focus on that. 'With my first chance I thought I was offside and for the second the lads said it was a good save, but I should have finished it. 'There will be some fresh legs out there against Germany, so hopefully we can get the three points and top the group, because that's our aim.'

Westlife star Nicky Byrne makes incredible Soccer Aid double save… then somehow avoids red card moments later

WESTLIFE star Nicky Byrne made a sensational double save to deny Jermain Defoe and Steven Bartlett at Soccer Aid. But just moments later the Irishman could have been sent off for a clear handball. 2 2 The Irishman, 46, came on for former Manchester United stopper Edwin van der Sar between the sticks at half-time. And the hitmaker was immediately called into action. England star Aaron Lennon rolled back the years to race down the right flank before squaring for former Tottenham team-mate Jermain Defoe. The legendary striker looked certain to score... only to be denied by Byrne's legs. Bartlett, 32, pounced on the rebound, but Byrne pounced up to deny the entrepreuneur. Barely a minute later, Defoe had another chance to score - sparking a moment of controversy. With Byrne having raced miles off his line, Defoe looked to flick the ball beyond the stopper. The Westlife star instinctively blocked the ball with his arm - sparking complaints from the England front man. Prem ref Rebecca Welch immediately blew her whistle, but only brandished a yellow card, much to Byrne's relief.

Daryl Gurney and Josh Rock break down in tears as Northern Ireland win World Cup of Darts in final leg decider

JOSH ROCK burst into tears on stage after Northern Ireland won a dramatic World Cup last leg decider. His team partner Daryl Gurney hit double eight to wrap up an epic 10-9 win over Wales pair Gerwyn price and Jonny Clayton in Sunday nights final in Frankfurt. 1 Rock, 24, and Gurney then dropped to their knees on stage in scenes of incredible emotion as they picked up their first world titles and an £80,000 jackpot. He said: 'When we said we are paired together we'll win it. We didn't expect to do it, but we did it. 'As a team we were fantastic. We fought hard all the way through.' Gurney added: 'Firstly congratulations to Wales. They showed their class. Jonny and Gezzy, absolute legends of the game. 'Josh had the power-scoring and I just had to clean up the finishing. 'I hope I don't get a fine for this but every time I went for double five a wee bit of poo fell out! 'I was never going to miss double eight. I have never been so proud of this man and myself.' Northern Ireland made a storming start and Wales were lucky to only be trailing 3-2 at the first break. Jonny Clayton then hit a wonderful 142 to draw it level. But Rock was in inspired form, hitting 180s for fun, breaking the tournament record of 20. However, Price hit tops to break throw and Wales still hadn't missed a dart at a double. Then Rock delivered a cool tops to live the game again at the second break at 5-5. Yet again Clayton nailed the double at first attempt and then a double six put them in command at 7-5. But a double 18 and double eight from Gurney put the Irish back in front. Gurney then delivered a cool double 14 and now they were just one leg from glory. But they missed four title darts and Clayton hit double 16 and it went down to a decider. Rock then hit a crucial 171 and Gurney finished it with double eight.
