— No. 7 Oregon has appeared in 21 of 25 preseason polls after having just one preseason ranking between 1950 and 2000 (1954).
— No. 8 Alabama's ranking is its lowest in the preseason since it was No. 24 in 2008, Nick Saban's second season.
— No. 9 LSU, which has been in all but one preseason poll since 2001, has lost five straight season openers.
— No. 10 Miami is in the preseason top 10 for only the second time since 2006. The Hurricanes were No. 8 in 2018.
— No. 11 Arizona State has its highest ranking to open a season since the 1998 team was No. 8.
— No. 12 Illinois has a preseason ranking for the first time since 2008 under Ron Zook. The Illini's No. 12 ranking is its highest in a preseason, regular season or postseason poll since they opened at No. 7 in 2001.
— No. 13 South Carolina has ended a 10-year preseason Top 25 drought. The Gamecocks' last preseason ranking was 2014 under Steve Spurrier.
— No. 14 Michigan saw its streak of three straight top-10 preseason rankings end.
— No. 15 Florida's preseason ranking is its first under fourth-year coach Billy Napier.
— No. 16 SMU is ranked in the preseason for the first time in 40 years. The 1985 team opened No. 3 and finished 6-5 and unranked.
— No. 17 Kansas State is ranked in the preseason for a third straight year, its longest streak since it was in the preseason Top 25 six straight years (1996-2001).
— No. 18 Oklahoma has been ranked in the preseason every year since 2000 and its 67 all-time preseason rankings are second to Ohio State's 72.
— No. 19 Texas A&M appears in its seventh straight AP preseason poll, but the Aggies have only finished ranked only once since 2019. That was the 2020 pandemic season.
— No. 20 Indiana has a preseason ranking for the first time since 2021. The Hoosiers went 2-10 that season.

The college football season is here. Which matchups are must-watch?
The 2025 college football season kicks off with fireworks, featuring eye-catching Week 1 showdowns like No. 1 Texas vs. No. 3 Ohio State, No. 9 LSU vs. No. 4 Clemson and No. 10 Miami vs. No. 6 Notre Dame. Despite the excitement of preseason powerhouses and Heisman Trophy contenders going head-to-head, early stumbles in September rarely end postseason dreams, certainly not in the new 12-team playoff era of college football. The real pressure hits as the season progresses and playoff standings are on the line. Here are six high-stakes matchups that you won't want to miss (using preseason AP Top 25 rankings): No. 9 LSU at No. 8 Alabama (Nov. 8) After falling short of the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff, pressure is building for LSU's Brian Kelly and Alabama's Kalen DeBoer. Both historically successful programs are not far removed from recent title victories, with LSU in 2020 and Alabama the following year. Both are coming off matching 9-4 seasons, each with a 5-3 conference record in the rugged SEC. Alabama should be favored in every game ahead of this one except for a late September visit to No. 5 Georgia. If LSU can knock off Clemson, the Tigers should be favored in all their games too ahead of this tilt. Last fall, a two-interception game from Garrett Nussmeier hurt the Tigers, who struggled to stop Jalen Milroe and Co. Now Nussmeier is considered a Heisman contender and he will get a chance for a marquee conference road win over the Tide and DeBoer, who wants to distance himself from last year's 9-4 debut season, No. 1 Texas at No. 5 Georgia (Nov. 15) Texas and Georgia, the two highest-ranked SEC teams in the AP Top 25 preseason poll, square off in Athens less than a month before the league title game, which is where they last met (a 22-19 Bulldogs win in December). Texas has a new quarterback in charge in Arch Manning; he briefly entered both games against Georgia in 2024, completing 3 of 6 passes for 19 yards after a slow start by Quinn Ewers and a 20-point deficit in Week 8. Both teams have a lot of football to navigate before this one but it could be a dandy — and a precursor to another meeting or even two before the season ends? No. 2 Penn State at No. 3 Ohio State (Nov. 1) Penn State earned the No. 2 seed in the Top 25, surpassing the reigning national champions, Ohio State, who came in at No. 3. The Big Ten rivals meet on Nov. 1 in Columbus in a matchup likely to carry league title game and playoff implications. Drew Allar, a two-headed rushing attack and a stout defense should have the Nittany Lions favored in every game before this one, with all due respect to No. 7 Oregon (Sept. 27). Same for the Buckeyes, who are a 2.5-point favorite over the higher-ranked Longhorns in the opener. Ohio State is 24-8 against Penn State and has won eight in a row. Coach James Franklin's sole victory against the Buckeyes was in 2016 during his second year at the helm. This year, the playoff format shifts to straight seeding, meaning the top four teams will be rewarded with a bye. A good showing here might impress the CFP committee before its first rankings of the season, too. No. 16 SMU at No. 4 Clemson (Oct. 18) Expectations are high for Clemson, which is loaded. After LSU, the Tigers could be on cruise control when SMU comes calling for a game that matches two CFP teams from a year ago (both lost in the first round). Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik, a Heisman favorite, had a standout outing against the Mustangs in 2024, throwing for 262 yards and four touchdowns. Receiver Bryant Wesco Jr. had a career-high eight receptions, 143 yards and two TDs. The two are expected to pick up where they left off. SMU QB Kevin Jennings is back amid some question marks elsewhere, but the schedule isn't daunting ahead of the trip to Clemson. No. 11 Arizona State at No. 22 Iowa State (Nov. 1) The Sun Devils went 11-3 and grabbed an automatic bid to the College Football Playoff last season, thanks in part to a dominant 45-19 Big 12 championship game victory against ... Iowa State. The Cyclones have some challenging games ahead of this one but wins there set this up nicely for a chance to impress the CFP committee. Power Four conference champions still earn a spot in the 12-team bracket, but they won't have the luxury of a first-round bye unless they're ranked in the top four. The Sun Devils could be in the running either way, but every win counts for both teams in pursuit of a playoff berth. USC at No. 6 Notre Dame (Oct. 18) After consecutive underwhelming seasons, USC coach Lincoln Riley could use a major road win, and is there a bigger statement to make than against a storied rival? Notre Dame has beaten the Trojans seven times in the last eight meetings, including the last two in which the Fighting Irish averaged 48.5 points. USC last won a game in Notre Dame Stadium in 2011. The Irish have national title hopes. The Trojans have hopes that Riley is finding the right formula to turn things around in what could be one of the last games in this longstanding series. The contract for a rivalry that dates to 1926 expires after their game in 2026. Honorable mention No. 8 Alabama at No. 5 Georgia (Sept. 27), a chance for 'Bama to improve to 10-1 against the Bulldogs since 2008 or for Kirby Smart to cut into his 1-6 record as a head coach against the Crimson Tide ... No. 3 Ohio State at No. 14 Michigan (Nov. 29), a matchup of the last two national champions in a series that has seen the Wolverines win four straight ... No. 25 Boise State at No. 6 Notre Dame (Oct. 4), a rare shot for a top Group of Five team to put up a marquee midseason win on the road ... No. 3 Ohio State at No. 12 Illinois (Oct. 11), a chance for Bret Bielema's Illini to show if last year's 10-win season was a fluke.

No. 4 Clemson's experience makes the Tigers the ACC favorite. Can anyone challenge them?
No. 4 Clemson won so much over more than a decade that it felt like a step back when the Tigers didn't reach 10 wins two years ago in the first of back-to-back four-loss seasons. Still, the Tigers are the reigning Atlantic Coast Conference champions and coming off a trip to the College Football Playoff. Experience from that run is part of why the Tigers are the runaway preseason pick to finish atop the ACC again. 'Experience, as they say, doesn't come at a discount,' coach Dabo Swinney said. Clemson won at least 10 games from 2011-2022, including two national championships and eight ACC titles, before a nine-win year in 2023. The Tigers (10-4) beat SMU for last year's title. 'I think our mentality is, man, we're keeping our head down, just kind of keeping it low,' said quarterback Cade Klubnik, the preseason ACC player of the year. Clemson returns four Associated Press All-ACC picks from last year, including first-team offensive lineman Blake Miller and two defensive linemen (Peter Woods and T.J. Parker) ranked in the top three among returners at their position nationally by Pro Football Focus. Overall, Clemson held 11 of 27 spots on the preseason all-ACC team. No other team held more than three. If not Clemson, then who? The ACC has two other teams ranked in the preseason AP Top 25 with No. 10 Miami and No. 16 SMU. The Hurricanes were the league's highest-ranked team much of last year, though they missed the ACC title game after losing at Syracuse. They brought in Georgia transfer quarterback Carson Beck as the successor to No. 1 overall NFL draft pick Cam Ward. The Mustangs have back-to-back 11-win seasons under Rhett Lashlee, who led SMU to an 8-0 record in its first league season. SMU returns quarterback Kevin Jennings (28 total touchdowns last year), and AP all-ACC picks in offensive lineman Logan Parr, safety Isaiah Nwokobia and kicker Collin Rogers. Seminoles' response Florida State entered last season as the reigning ACC champion and preseason favorite, then went 2-10. Coach Mike Norvell's offseason included hiring two coordinators, notably former Auburn and UCF head coach Gus Malzahn for the offense. 'When you come to Florida State, you'd better embrace the highest of expectations, because it's what I have, it's what our program has,' Norvell said. New faces Three new coaches arrive in North Carolina's Bill Belichick, Wake Forest's Jake Dickert and Stanford's Frank Reich. Belichick led the New England Patriots to six Super Bowl titles but this is his first college season, while the school is betting on the 73-year-old to elevate its football profile after moving on from Mack Brown. Dickert left Washington State for Wake Forest after Dave Clawson unexpectedly stepped down after the season. Reich, who joins Belichick and Boston College's Bill O'Brien as the ACC's national-high three former NFL head coaches, is an interim coach after the spring firing of Troy Taylor due to off-field concerns. Irish factor Sixth-ranked Notre Dame has six games against ACC teams as part of its annual scheduling partnership with the league, with the football independent being a member of all other ACC sports. Those don't count in the league standings but certainly have CFP implications for last year's national runner-up. The biggest comes with an opening-game trip to Miami (Aug. 31), along with trips to Boston College (Nov. 1), Pittsburgh (Nov. 15) and Stanford (Nov. 29). The Irish's home games come against N.C. State (Oct. 11) and Syracuse (Nov. 22). Heading west Boston College, Duke, FSU, UNC, Pittsburgh and Virginia are this year's teams to touch all four U.S. continental time zones for a league road trip in Year 2 of westward expansion. California hosts the Blue Devils (Oct. 4), Tar Heels (Oct. 17) and Cavaliers (Nov. 1). Stanford hosts the Eagles (Sept. 13), Seminoles (Oct. 18) and Panthers (Nov. 1). That would leave Clemson and Georgia Tech as the only ACC teams yet to travel to California. Both go next year, the Tigers to Cal and the Yellow Jackets to Stanford. Marquee matchups The league gets immediate measuring-stick matchups. Week 1 features LSU visiting Clemson, Alabama visiting Florida State, TCU visiting UNC and Georgia Tech visiting Colorado. There are also Atlanta games with Syracuse meeting Tennessee and Virginia Tech facing South Carolina. Key conference games include Clemson visiting Georgia Tech (Sept. 13), hosting SMU (Oct. 18) and traveling to Louisville (Nov. 14). Miami hosts Louisville (Oct. 17) and visits SMU (Nov. 1), while SMU hosts Louisville (Nov. 22). The ACC title game is Dec. 6 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
