Premier League opener halted after Antoine Semenyo reports racist abuse

Sky News2 days ago
A man was ejected from Anfield after reports of racial abuse directed at Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo during the season's opening Premier League game against Liverpool.
Match referee Anthony Taylor paused play in the 29th minute after Semenyo accused a spectator of racist abuse.
An anti-discrimination message was read out to the Anfield crowd, and it is understood that police officers went into the referee's room at half-time.
Merseyside Police said an investigation is under way after the 47-year-old man's identity was confirmed and he was removed from the ground.
Chief Inspector Kev Chatterton, the match commander for the Liverpool v Bournemouth game, said: "Merseyside Police will not tolerate hate crime of any form.
"We take incidents like this very seriously, and in cases like this we will be proactively seeking football banning orders, with the club, against those responsible."
He added: "There is no place for racism and it is vital that anyone who witnesses such an offence reports it to stewards, or the police immediately, so we can take the necessary action like we did this evening.
"As with all matches, we work very closely with both Liverpool and Everton FC to ensure the safety of the public, and the players."
A spokesperson for Liverpool said the club was "aware of an allegation of racist abuse made during our Premier League game against Bournemouth".
The Liverpool spokesperson said: "We condemn racism and discrimination in all forms, it has no place in society, or football.
"The club is unable to comment further as tonight's alleged is incident is the subject of an ongoing police investigation, which we will support fully."
After the incident, Semenyo scored twice in the second half to help bring Bournemouth back from two goals down at Anfield before Liverpool went on to eventually win the contest 4-2.
Bournemouth captain Adam Smith told Sky Sports News afterwards: "It shouldn't be happening. I don't know how Ant's played on to be honest and come up with those goals. It's totally unacceptable.
"Something needs to be done. Taking the knee isn't having an effect. We're supporting him and hopefully he'll be OK.
"I wanted him to react because that's what I would have done, but this shows what type of man he is...to come up with those goals showed the type of guy he is.
"To be fair the Liverpool players were very supportive as well towards Antoine and the rest of the team. It was handled in the right way but... so angry.
"I don't know what else we can do. No one's getting it. I don't know what to say anymore. I just feel for Ant... shocking."
The Premier League said in a statement that its "on-field anti-discrimination protocol" had been followed and the incident "will now be fully investigated".
"We offer our full support to the player and both clubs," it added. "Racism has no place in our game, or anywhere in society. We will continue to work with stakeholders and authorities to ensure our stadiums are an inclusive and welcoming environment for all."
The Football Association said it was "concerned" about the allegation of racism towards Semenyo and that it would ensure "appropriate action" would be taken.
The incident comes two days after Tottenham Hotspur player Mathys Tel faced racist abuse online following a missed penalty in his team's UEFA Super Cup victory over Paris Saint-Germain.

Ruben Amorim drops hint over goalkeeper signing and explains Andre Onana drama

Ruben Amorim is happy with his three goalkeepers, insisting he did not drop Andre Onana for Manchester United's Premier League opener against Arsenal. Altay Bayindir was named in the starting XI at Old Trafford on Sunday and was at fault after just 13 minutes, failing to deal with Declan Rice's corner with Riccardo Calafiori converting from close range. While United turned in a much-improved display with new signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo impressing on their competitive debuts, that early goal was the difference with Arsenal leaving Manchester with all three points. Onana missed United's entire pre-season campaign after suffering a hamstring injury just two days after returning to training. The Cameroon international was fit and available for Sunday's league opener with Amorim opting to keep faith in Bayindir who featured throughout the pre-season campaign. Onana was not named in the matchday squad but Amorim was adamant it was not a case of the player being dropped, more so deciding he was not match fit after his recent layoff. 'I didn't drop Onana from the squad. I didn't drop one of the other two from the squad,' Amorim told a post-match press conference. 'It is not putting Andre Onana with just one week, without seeing a game, without time training.' United have been strongly linked with signing another goalkeeper with Gianluigi Donnaumma, available having been told he has no future at Paris Saint-Germain. Pushed on whether he is happy with his options in goal with 39-year-old Tom Heaton also in the squad, Amorim insisted he was content with what he has. 'We prove today that we can win any game in the Premier League especially against team like Arsenal. I'm happy with the players. I'm happy with the three goalkeepers.' More Trending Former United skipper Roy Keane was predictably damning in his assessment if Bayindir's performance. 'That's his area. He has to come with violence, he's got to be aggressive,' Keane told Sky Sports. 'He's got to say to players, 'Yeah, come here, I'm happy to deal with it.' You've got to be aggressive; it's just not strong enough. 'He's appealing to the referee. Don't be appealing to the referee. He's on his heels; it's far too easy. It's schoolboy stuff.' Man United can beat anybody says Amorim after promising signs in defeat

MANCHESTER, England, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Manchester United lost to Arsenal in their opener on Sunday but Ruben Amorim remained full of optimism and said his rebuilt team can now beat anybody in the Premier League as the club try to put last season's woeful 15th-place finish behind them. Riccardo Calafiori headed home from an early corner to give Arsenal a 1-0 win, with a weak challenge from goalkeeper Altay Bayindir one of United's few mistakes on an afternoon that sent their fans home from Old Trafford feeling positive. "We have players to win any game in the Premier League," said Amorim, flashing a rare smile after the scowl he wore for most of last season. "We were more aggressive than last year. We went one against one all the game and we pressed high. We had quality with the ball." Close-season signings Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo injected pace and creativity into United's attack, with the ex-Wolves man, who had three shots on target, arguably the best player on the pitch. "We did a lot things right," Amorim said. "We were more aggressive and brave. In certain moments I think Bryan and Cunha helped a lot. We stuck to the plan even when the stadium was nervous, we continued to play the way we played and that will help us in the future. "(The fans) want that feeling again. We go to Old Trafford and we are not going to get bored. We need to win more than last season but they want to see something and feel something." United also looked more composed defensively than last term, but the error from their Turkish keeper begged the question about that position in Amorim's team. Arsenal's William Saliba backed into Bayindir, who feebly batted the ball with one hand into the path of Italian Calafiori for an easy close-range header. Amorim said United needed to match Arsenal's physicality on the corner. "If you can watch the goal, I think (players) are allowed to do a lot of things in the corners. We need to do the same," he said. "But when you touch that way the goalkeeper, he needs to use his hands to catch the ball, not to push players, or he chooses to push players and let the ball past. "But again, (it) is the rules. If he's allowed, we need to do the same thing." Bayindir was selected ahead of usual starter Andre Onana, who has had only three training sessions after recovering from injury. Onana made mistakes himself last season but Amorim shrugged off questions about any changes in that position.

Watch: Roy Keane and Micah Richards begin new season with heated row over Man Utd

Roy Keane and Micah Richards traded blows on Manchester United's defending after the former club captain blamed defeat against Arsenal on 'schoolboy' goalkeeping. The pair served up one of their pantomime fallouts on Sky Sports' coverage of the opening weekend of the Premier League season as Keane attacked a gaffe from stand-in goalkeeper Altay Bayindir that produced the only goal of the match. Bayindir had flapped at a corner to allow Riccardo Calafiori to nod in on the goal-line. But as the Irishman ranted in the studio over the goalkeeper's failure to punch the ball clear, Richards waded in to say he was not adequately protected by Mason Mount – prompting Keane to shout at him that the game is 'big boys' stuff'. "Micah, this is big boy stuff!" Roy Keane and Micah Richards trade blows over Altay Bayındır's decision-making for Arsenal's goal... 😬 — Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) August 17, 2025 Richards said United's positioning for the corner was to blame as Matthijs de Ligt should have been marking the towering Arsenal centre-back William Saliba, who challenged Bayindir as the ball swung in, instead of midfielder Mount. 'If you look at the balance between Saliba and Mount at the time, he's getting ragdolled everywhere,' Richards said. 'I just thought De Ligt could have come inside and Mount could have gone outside.' The comments brought a rise out of Keane, with Daniel Sturridge sitting back in his seat and watching the row unfold, as the former United midfielder intervened to tell Richards that 'this is big boys' stuff'. 'If they've got players a lot bigger than your lads, you're going to be outmatched somewhere,' said Keane. 'You can't babysit a goalkeeper!' Keane said Bayindir 'has to come with violence' during inswinging corners, but he had shown 'he's not strong enough' and it was 'far too easy' and 'like schoolboy stuff'. Later Richards, who had praised performances from the likes of United debutant Bryan Mbeumo, jokingly urged Keane to 'find some positives' in the team's opening-day performance. But Keane was unable to summon optimism. 'The expectations at United now are so low that even when Gary [Neville] is on commentary, everyone's even comfortable with a 1-0 defeat,' he added. 'United have got to do better. It does worry me. Obviously, a couple of the new signings, a lot of encouragement with that. Getting up the pitch there was a bit more power. 'Obviously results are going to improve, it's always tough against Arsenal, but again no goal, another defeat. There's still problems there with United. We see with the goal, the set-piece, physicality, determination to get a result, goalkeeper not being strong enough.' As Sky Sports Soccer Sunday returned, some viewers were startled by the novelty of Arsenal's Martin Odegaard being interviewed at half-time by Patrick Davison. As part of the domestic TV deal worth £6.7bn, broadcasters have been granted more access than ever.
