Bengaluru smuggling case: Ranya Rao and Tarun Konduru brought 100 kg of gold from Dubai to India, DRI tells court

Indian Express22-04-2025
The probe into the gold smuggling racket involving Kannada actress Ranya Rao and Telugu actor Virat Konduru alias Tarun Konduru has revealed that 100 kg of gold was smuggled to India from Dubai as part of their operation, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) told the Karnataka High Court on Monday during a bail hearing for the two accused.
The agency stated that through the analysis of the Customs declarations made in Dubai by the two accused and the amount of gold found to have been received by hawala dealer Sahil Jain, who has also been arrested in the case, it found that 100 kg of gold was smuggled, apart from the 14.2 kg of gold seized from Ranya Rao at the Bengaluru airport on March 3.
The agency said that it had found evidence of gold smuggling in 11 of the 31 visits undertaken by the actors to Dubai since early 2024. It added that it was looking for more evidence to link their trips to instances of gold smuggling. The actors had gone to Dubai on 25 occasions on single-day trips, the court was informed.
The counsel for the DRI, Madhu N Rao, told the single-judge bench during the arguments that it had obtained four more Customs declarations pertaining to 2024 during the investigations. The court directed the DRI counsel to provide all details of the declarations.
The high court also asked the DRI counsel how Ranya Rao had obtained special protocol services available to government officials at the Bengaluru airport during her return trips from the US. The counsel said that Ranya availed the protocol services at the airport on account of instructions given by her stepfather, senior DGP-rank police officer Ramachandra Rao, to a police constable who was handling the protocol services at the airport.
The counsel for Ranya Rao earlier argued that the DRI did not follow search and arrest procedures mandated by the Customs Act while intercepting the actress on March 3 on her arrival from Dubai. The counsel for Virat Konduru, meanwhile, argued that his client was not connected to the smuggling activities.
The DRI has alleged that the two accused used Konduru's US passport to pass the large quantities of gold through Dubai Customs checks by claiming that the gold was being taken to Geneva, Bangkok and the US.
The high court will hear the case again on Tuesday.

Your comments are proof why Renukaswamy's family needs justice: Ramya slams Darshan fans

Actress Ramya is once again facing a wave of online trolling for speaking out in support of Renukaswamy's family — the victim in the ongoing murder case linked to actor Darshan . Last week, the Supreme Court strongly criticised the Karnataka High Court's decision to grant bail to Darshan, questioning the rationale behind the order and suggesting it nearly amounted to an acquittal. Sharing a screenshot of this development, Ramya took to Instagram to demand justice for Renukaswamy's death, and wrote: 'SC is a ray of hope for the common people of India- justice for the family of Renukaswamy.' However, her post did not sit well with Darshan's fanbase, many of whom flooded her comments section with abusive and hateful messages. Unfazed, Ramya responded with a sharply worded Instagram Story that read: 'To all the DBoss fans — Welcome to my Instagram :) Your comments are proof why Renukaswamy's family needs justice!' This isn't the first time Ramya has been targeted. Last year, shortly after Darshan's arrest, she had posted, 'No one is above the law. No one should take the law into their hands.' That too had triggered a wave of trolling from his supporters. Meanwhile, Darshan — currently out on bail — has been on a temple run, recently spotted visiting multiple temples across Karnataka. He had also traveled to Thailand last week to shoot portions of his upcoming film Devil, and returned to Bengaluru two days ago. Ramya and Darshan have shared the screen in two Kannada films — Datta and Snehana Preethina.

Karntaka high court notice to National Highways Authority on PIL against illegal toll collection

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court has ordered notice to the ministry of road transport and the National Highways Authority of India, in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking a direction to restrain them from the alleged illegal collection of Rs 40 toll at Nagasandra. A division bench comprising Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice CM Joshi directed the respondents to submit their response to the PIL filed by advocate AV Amarnathan and posted the matter for hearing on Sept 17. According to the petitioner, he recently shifted his residence to a township located at Dasanapura on Huskur Road. While travelling along the Nelamangala-Bengaluru Road via Nagasandra flyover, a Rs 40 toll charge was collected from him for about 5-km distance from the Parle G factory to Goraguntepalya stretch. He added that when he received a map from Bengaluru North taluk, issued by the survey department, he came to know that the collection of the toll is illegal since the 5-km stretch falls within the city. Apart from seeking a prayer for restraining the respondents, the petitioner also sought a direction to them to furnish details of the toll collection at Nagasandra toll plaza from 2021 till now.

NCB, police in Rajasthan and Maharashtra bust inter-State synthetic drug syndicate

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), in coordination with police in Rajasthan and Maharashtra, has busted an inter-State drug syndicate allegedly involved in the clandestine manufacture of synthetic drugs. The NCB said that on July 22, a laboratory was detected inside a buffalo barn located in a secluded village in Rajasthan's Barmer district. During the raid, the Barmer police recovered several precursor chemicals, including chloroform, ammonium chloride, propylene chloride, toluene and bromine, along with equipment used to manufacture Mephedrone. Two members of the syndicate were detained, and the NCB's Jodhpur unit joined the investigation with the local police. Interrogation of the accused led to the identification of a resident of Raigad district in Maharashtra, who allegedly transported the chemicals and equipment to set up the lab. Following his detention by the Raigad police, the accused revealed that he had previously worked at a now-defunct factory. A search of the premises led to the seizure of approximately 34 kg of Ketamine in powdered form and 12 litres of Ketamine in liquid form, along with chemicals such as chloroform, ammonium chloride, propylene chloride, toluene, bromine and cyclohexanone, and various lab instruments. 'These shut premises were being used to run the lab clandestinely to manufacture Ketamine. Investigation has further revealed involvement of a mastermind who has been involved in earlier drug trafficking cases of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and NCB,' the agency said in a statement. Earlier, a clandestine laboratory manufacturing Mephedrone was busted by the NCB Jodhpur unit in Sri Ganganagar, where five kg of the drug along with precursor chemicals were recovered. Among the arrested were persons with backgrounds in physics and chemistry. In response to the growing trend of synthetic drug manufacture in concealed setups, the NCB has circulated a list of 'red flag indicators' to all State Directors General of Police to aid in identification of such facilities.
