UAE satellite Etihad-SAT beams back first signal to Earth
The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) announced receiving the first signal from Etihad-SAT, its first Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite.
It represents a technological leap in MBRSC's satellite fleet, integrating radar imaging technology with existing optical satellite capabilities. Unlike traditional optical cameras, radar imaging relies on radio waves that penetrate clouds, darkness, and even rain, making it a powerful tool for consistent and uninterrupted data collection.
Talal Humaid Belhoul Al Falasi, Vice President of MBRSC, noted that the UAE is steadily advancing towards strengthening its position among the leading nations in space science and technology, guided by the vision and support of the leadership. 'This milestone paves the way for leveraging space technologies across various fields that serve the nation.'
Strategic partnership
Etihad-SAT was developed through a strategic partnership with South Korea's Satrec Initiative. MBRSC's team led the technical specifications phase before moving on to preliminary design and technical validation to ensure compliance with the highest global standards. In the later stages, MBRSC engineers took the lead in finalising the design and manufacturing in partnership with Satrec Initiative.
Hamad Obaid AlMansoori, Chairman of MBRSC, said the successful launch of Etihad-SAT reflects the progress made by the UAE in the space sector.
'This achievement reflects our commitment to advancing the UAE National Space Programme and is part of our ambitious strategy to drive innovation and space technology development.'
Salem Humaid AlMarri, Director General of MBRSC, said the achievement highlights the UAE's capability to develop cutting-edge space technologies while maintaining strategic partnerships with the global space community.
'These collaborations are essential for knowledge exchange and advancing joint efforts, ultimately helping us achieve ambitious goals in space science and technology.'
Ee-Eul Kim, CEO & President, Satrec Initiative, said the milestone highlights the importance of international collaboration.
'We look forward to continued cooperation with MBRSC and the UAE in shaping the future of space technology.'
'A powerful tool'
Asmaa AlJanaahi, Specialist, Image Processing Section at MBRSC, Asmaa pointed out that the data provided by Etihad-SAT will be processed using AI-powered technologies.
'Etihad-SAT transmits electromagnetic radar waves towards Earth, which then strikes various materials and bounce back. The reflectance varies between different materials based on their physical properties,' Asmaa said. 'When these waves are reflected back to the satellite, it collects data that is analysed using artificial intelligence to generate high-resolution imagery. The process functions effectively in different weather conditions and even at night,' she noted.
Abdullah Harmoul, Project Manager, Etihad-SAT, explained the imaging modes used by the advanced SAR satellite for Earth observation.
'The Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite Etihad-SAT provides precise imaging of Earth in three modes. The first one is spot mode, which covers small areas with higher resolution imaging. The second is scan mode, which provides wider area coverage, and the third is strip mode, which provides longer coverage,' Harmoul said.
These features make Etihad-SAT a powerful tool for multiple industries, from detecting oil spills and managing natural disasters to enhancing maritime navigation, supporting smart agriculture, and conducting environmental monitoring.
The satellite will be operated and managed by MBRSC's Mission Control Centre, with specialised teams overseeing operations and analyse the data transmitted back to Earth.

CRISPR Therapeutics (NasdaqGM:CRSP) Sees 16% Stock Price Surge Over Last Month
CRISPR Therapeutics experienced a 15.8% increase in its share price over the past month. While specific recent news on the company was not available to credit for this movement, it's worth noting that during this period, the broader market rose by 1.8%, and has seen a 13% increase over the past year. With market earnings projected to grow 14% annually, the strong performance of CRISPR's stock could be viewed alongside these generally positive trends and any recent but unspecified developments as contributing factors to its upward momentum in the market. Be aware that CRISPR Therapeutics is showing 1 weakness in our investment analysis. Trump's oil boom is here — pipelines are primed to profit. Discover the 22 US stocks riding the wave. Over the past year, CRISPR Therapeutics' shares experienced a total return of 27.67% decline. This longer-term performance contrasts with the U.S. market's return of 12.6% and the U.S. Biotechs industry return of 9% over the same period. Despite the recent 15.8% increase in CRISPR's stock price over the past month, the longer-term underperformance highlights ongoing challenges. The company's significant net losses and decreasing revenue signal potential hurdles to achieving forecasted revenue growth of 57.32% per year. Earnings forecasts remain bleak, as CRISPR is currently unprofitable and not expected to turn profitable within the next three years. This indicates that while the recent uptick in share price might be aligned with short-term market trends, the company's underlying financial health presents uncertainties. Analyst consensus estimates a fair value price target of US$81.67, which is over twice the current share price. This suggests that the stock is trading at a substantial discount, potentially implying room for future price appreciation if the company can improve its financial metrics. However, it also underscores the risks, given the current unprofitable status and forecasted challenges ahead. North Dakota man accused of threatening to kill Obama, breaking into historic trading post site
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota man is accused of threatening to kill former President Barack Obama, breaking into a National Park Service historic site and threatening other people. A federal grand jury indictment filed Wednesday levies felony charges of burglary, damage to property of the U.S., terrorizing, malicious mischief, threatening to kill a former U.S. president and three counts of threatening interstate communications against Ian Patrick Stewart of Williston. The indictment said Stewart 'did knowingly and willfully threaten to kill and inflict bodily harm upon' Obama between April 20 and May 13. The document doesn't detail the alleged threat. Stewart also is accused of threatening to injure three Williston residents in May. The court papers say Stewart entered Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site on May 13 when it wasn't open to the public, caused a building to evacuate and threatened a Park Service employee and Williams County law enforcement. He was armed, according to the indictment. Several law enforcement agencies responded, and the historic site and the road to it were closed during the 'barricaded subject situation,' the Williams County Sheriff's Office previously said. Stewart is held at the Ward County Detention Center in Minot. He is scheduled to appear Monday in court. No attorney is listed for him in court records. The Associated Press left him a voicemail. Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site is along the Missouri River at the Montana-North Dakota border. The site focuses on the history of the fur trade and the post that operated there for decades in the 19th century.

‘Disgusted' Disney World fans fume that execs are ‘wiping out' park's original spirit as Rivers of America attraction closes down: ‘Canceling my trip'
They're sad about the happiest place on Earth. Disney World fans are fuming after the theme park announced the closure of three of its most iconic attractions: Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat. The beloved destinations are set to shutter on July 7 to make way for Piston Peak National Park— a new attraction based on the Disney and Pixar 'Cars' universe. 3 The riverboat Liberty Belle sailing on the Rivers of America passes Tom Sawyer Island at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. TNS 3 Disney World, which has been in operation since 1971, is pictured. AP 'Imagine an awe-inspiring wilderness filled with towering trees, snowcapped mountains, breathtaking waterfalls, roaring rivers and impressive geysers,' the Disney Parks Blog enthused in a post promoting Piston Peak. 'While fictional, Piston Peak is inspired by the Rocky Mountain area and the history and iconic sights of the American Frontier and its national parks.' However, many Disney World visitors are dismayed that the new park will be constructed ot the expense of the other three attractions — all of which have been open to the public for decades. 'Canceling my trip in October and sadly, will never visit that park again,' one mourned. 'I am heartbroken at the loss of Tom Sawyer Island,' a Disney detractor declared on X. 'This is the WORST decision ever.' 'Walt's Rivers of America transports you to something ideal in American values of exploration, adventure, history, and scenery. A true park within a park,' an additional fan fawned. 'This is a HUGE mistake from Disney. Cartoon Cars will never last the test of time.' 3 However, other Disney lovers were far more upbeat about the upcoming changes, saying plans for Piston Peak appeared promising. 'I'm disgusted with current leadership of Disney Corp. I'm done with them. Still love classic Disney, but I've lost all interest in anything about current 'Disney' (parks , movies, streaming). They are not part of my world anymore.' However, other Disney lovers were far more upbeat about the upcoming changes, saying plans for Piston Peak appeared promising. 'I showed this to my 10-year-old and he SQUEALED with joy and shouted 'PISTON PEAK?!' I'm thrilled that new generations are getting spaces in the parks that speak to them. Almost forgot this is the whole point,' one Disney defender posted on X in light of the news. 'Thanks for your insight,' one reader responded. 'I'm so tired of the negativity around this upgrade of the space. 'I like that they're incorporating the river & adding new water features to keep the same vibe,' another wrote on Facebook DW News Today shared the news.
