Guwahati: Indian Army engineers under the Spear Corps collaborated with the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) to orchestrate a groundbreaking disaster relief exercise, aptly christened ' Exercise Raahat '.Defence spokesman Lt Col Amit Shukla on Thursday said that the meticulously planned 3-day exercise was held in Rangapahar Military Station in Nagaland from May 13 to 15 May, marking a new paradigm in the field of disaster management and response.'Exercise Raahat' was conceived with a singular vision of elevating the readiness and efficiency of disaster relief operations , especially with the looming spectre of the monsoon season.Lt Col Shukla said that the exercise showcased a master class in synergy, drawing on the rich tapestry of experience and expertise of the Indian Army and NDRF.By leveraging each other's strengths and sharing invaluable lessons from past endeavours, the two organisations have set a new benchmark in disaster relief operations, he said.The exercise unfolded over three action-packed days, with May 13 and 14 being dedicated to intensive planning sessions.'Here, the sharpest minds from both forces engaged in spirited discussions, war-gamed complex scenarios and dissected real-life case studies. Group discussions fostered dynamic responses, ensuring that every conceivable challenge was met with innovative solutions,' the Defence spokesman said.He said that the culmination of 'Exercise Raahat' on May 15 witnessed a lecture-cum-demonstration. The sappers showcased a dazzling array of cutting-edge equipment and demonstrated the full spectrum of relief operations, including rescue missions and critical medical assistance.Whereas, the skilled troops of NDRF exhibited their prowess with niche disaster relief equipment, underscoring their readiness to tackle any emergency.The spokesman said that the demonstration was further enriched by the enthusiastic participation of flood relief columns from various units of the Spear Corps, reinforcing the emphasis on inter-agency cooperation Lt Gen Abhijit S Pendharkar, GOC, Spear Corps, addressed the participants and lauded the professionalism and dedication of all participants, duly emphasising that this exercise would catalyse enhanced preparedness and seamless synergy between Army and NDRF.The GOC noted that the integration of new technologies would further empower both organisations to respond swiftly and effectively to any kind of disaster.'Exercise Raahat' stands as a shining beacon of what can be achieved when vision, expertise and teamwork converge. As the monsoon season approaches, the lessons learned and bonds forged during this exercise will undoubtedly translate into lives saved and communities protected, the Defence spokesman stated.

At least 15 workers injured as under-construction structure collapses in Maharashtra's Nagpur
At least 15 workers were injured on Saturday when a part of an under-construction gate collapsed on the Khaparkheda–Koradi Temple route in Maharashtra's Nagpur. Inspector Krupal Mule of the 5th Battalion, Pune NDRF, said the structure had already collapsed when their team reached the site.(ANI) Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) Chairman Sanjay Meena said the rescue and clearance operations are ongoing. The initial reports suggest that the vibrations from the construction equipment may have triggered the collapse, he said, adding that no fatalities have been reported so far. '15-16 people were injured. There are no grievous injuries. They are in the hospital. The collector has given his official statement. Construction work of Koradi temple was ongoing here. Contractors under NMRDA were working here. How this happened can be spoken about only after a complete inquiry. We will have a detailed inquiry. There are no casualties so far,' Sanjay Meena said. The NDRF and police have commenced a rescue operation and clearing a huge pile of debris. The incident occurred between 8.00 and 8.15 pm on the Khaparkheda–Koradi Temple road. Nagpur district magistrate Vipin Itankar told ANI, 'When RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) for the slab was being put in, it collapsed. The labourers who were working suffered minor injuries. They were 15-16 in number. Some have been shifted to Nandini Hospital, and some to Max Hospital.' NDRF says it has rescued all trapped people Nagpur district magistrate said, 'As per protocol, NDRF, Police Department and Revenue Department are present here. The debris is being removed with the help of machines.' He also appealed to the public not to circulate misinformation. 'I have a request that the rumours should not be spread that there are so many 50 people, 15-16 have been shifted and have minor injuries, and the work of removing the debris is going on.' Inspector Krupal Mule of the 5th Battalion, Pune NDRF, said the structure had already collapsed when their team reached the site. Mule told ANI, 'When the team of 5 Battalion NDRF reached here, the structure had completely collapsed. When we asked, we were told that everyone who was working here was injured, but all of them were rescued. Nobody was found trapped here. We first conducted a physical search here, followed by a canine search. There doesn't seem to be anyone trapped here so far. But we will first have to clear the debris, and only after that can a comment be made…' When asked about the cause of the collapse, he said, 'It is being said that construction work was ongoing and due to vibrations (of equipment), it all collapsed at once. Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla Saturday performed a havan, a ritual that involves making offerings into a consecrated fire, on the auspicious occasion of Sawan Purnima at Raj Bhavan. He prayed for peace, safety, and protection of the state from natural calamities. Special offerings were made to seek divine intervention in preventing the recurrence of disasters that have recently affected Himachal Pradesh and the neighbouring state of Uttarakhand. Himachal Pradesh has witnessed disasters causing a loss of more than 56 human lives and infrastructure worth crores of rupees during the ongoing monsoon. Governor Shukla's wife Janaki Shukla, and all officers and staff members of Raj Bhavan were present. Speaking on the occasion, Governor Shukla said, 'We, the people of Himachal, are deeply rooted in our faith, and firmly believe that such spiritual endeavours will help protect the 'Dev Bhoomi' from natural calamities.' Shukla expressed concern over the significant losses the state has suffered in recent years due to natural disasters. Recalling his recent visit to the disaster-affected Siraj region of Mandi district, the governor noted the extensive damage to life and property. Shukla added that through the havan, prayers were also offered for peace to the departed souls who lost their lives in these calamities. Extending warm greetings on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, he said the festival is a symbol of affection, trust, and mutual protection. Secretary to the Governor, C P Verma, was also present on the occasion. Following the havan, members of Maitri Sanstha and women from the state Red Cross tied Rakhis on the governor's wrist, wishing him a long life and good health. The governor remarked that the delicate thread of Raksha Sutra not only binds the wrist but also connects hearts and souls.
