Joe Root is the world No. 1 Test batter, and on Friday (July 25), during the first session of the third day's play of the ongoing fourth India-England Test at Old Trafford in Manchester, he completed his 67th Test half-century. The half-century by Root on Friday morning also took his tally of 50+ scores in Test cricket to 104 now. Only Sachin Tendulkar of India has scored more 50+ scores in the five-day format of the game than Root.
The ongoing match in Manchester is Root's 157th Test for England. Root has 37 centuries and 67 half-centuries to his credit in Test cricket.
Tendulkar played 200 Tests for India from 1989 to 2013 and crossed the 50-run mark 119 times. He scored 51 centuries and 68 half-centuries.
Most 50+ scores in Tests
If Root, who is the third leading run getter in Test cricket, manages to convert his fifty into a century in the first innings, then he will break Steve Smith's record and become the first player in the world to score 12 Test centuries against India.
Root also needs to score at least 120 runs in the ongoing match to break Ricky Ponting's record of 13,378 runs and become the second leading run getter in Test cricket.
Ponting played 168 Tests for Australia from 1995 to 2012 and amassed a total of 13,378 runs.
The overall record of scoring the most runs in Tests is in the name of Tendulkar. Tendulkar played 200 matches and scored 15,921 runs for India.

Rishabh Pant's foot injury during the fourth Test raised questions about whether teams should be allowed to have substitutes who can bat or bowl in case someone is unable to continue owing to some serious injury. When the Indian team travelled to England under a new captain in Gill, there were doubts about how it would adjust to the conditions. But the team proved its mettle, time and again. 'I don't believe that the team is in transition, because it's still an Indian team. And this is the best 18 that is going to represent, and more importantly, it's not a transition, it's just a little bit of inexperience,' Gambhir said. 'It's only about experience and inexperience, and that is how we see this. And, after a memorable comeback in the Manchester Test, they are moving in that direction. A 188-run stand between captain Shubman Gill and K L Rahul kept India in the fourth Test against England before Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja earned a spirited draw for the visitors with an unbeaten 203-run alliance. Asked whether Gambhir gave a pep talk to the players after day four and made a reference to his match-saving 137 in Napier back in 2009, Gambhir responded in the negative. 'Look, the first thing is that I don't remember any of my knocks, that has become history. I think they should make their own history. Honestly, no one in this team will follow anyone or want to follow. They should make their own history. 'They want to fight for the common man back home. And the important thing is that the way a lot of people had written us off in this Test match, this is the foundation of this team. 'These are characters who are sitting in this dressing room, wanting to fight for the country and they will continue to do that," said the head coach. Managing a draw from the brink of defeat would give India a psychological edge over the hosts in the fifth and final Test in London, felt Gambhir. 'It will. Manchester, Jul 27 (PTI) Head coach Gautam Gambhir on Sunday said the character and foundation of the current Indian team will be built on the remarkable act of courage from Rishabh Pant, who batted in the first innings of the fourth Test with a broken right foot. Pant added crucial first innings runs for the team despite batting with a fractured foot after missing a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes on day one. He managed to get a half-century, helping India post 358 on day two. Pant was not required to bat in the second innings as Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar guided India to a morale-boosting draw with a century each to keep the series alive. 'Rishabh already, it's been declared that he's out of the series. And one thing I want to say is that the character and the foundation of this team will be built on what Rishabh did for the team and for the country as well," said Gambhir in the post-match media interaction.
