Posh London restaurant fined £31,000 after dead mouse found in kitchen
New photographs showing the appalling unsanitary scenes at Beach Blanket Babylon have emerged after the former owner was convicted at court of a string of food hygiene offences.
Another image shows cockroaches in a kitchen area at the once upmarket townhouse and ballroom in Notting Hill, west London, which was also found to be infested with mice and rats.
Other hygiene breaches discovered by inspectors from Kensington and Chelsea Council included packets of till white seeds, cocoa powder and flaked almonds that had been gnawed by mice.
The now closed restaurant became a den of hygiene horrors despite the likes of Prince William and Kate, Prince Harry, Rita Ora, Selena Gomez and Naomi Campbell having been among the customers.
Conor George Thomson-Moore, 30, was ordered to pay a total of £31,000 for serious breaches of food and hygiene legislation.
The amount imposed at Westminster Magistrates' Court included a £7,000 fine, £2,000 victim surcharge and the council's legal costs of £22,000.
Thomson-Moore, who is no longer the owner, was also banned from operating a food business for 10 years under the Food Hygiene England Regulations at the hearing on June 16.
He had previously pleaded guilty to contamination of food with mouse droppings, poor cleaning, inadequate pest control procedures and failure to comply with a Hygiene Improvement Notice.
The prosecution was brought after inspectors found the breaches during a visit in September 2022, including droppings around the premises and food contaminated with mouse faeces.
A further visit in February 2023 found there was no hot water and further issues with pest control.
Hygiene Improvement Notices were served but the food business operators failed to comply with one of the notices for lack of hot water to a wash hand basin.
The restaurant had marketed itself as a townhouse with a ballroom 'serving beautiful British food and inspired cocktails from lunch till late.'
But one nearby cafe worker previously told Metro: 'I never went there because I heard horrible things.
'Apparently it was really dirty in there, like the back of house had rats and bugs, if it reopened I wouldn't go in.'
Cllr Johnny Thalassites, lead member for environment and planning said: 'Kensington and Chelsea is home to a vibrant and growing food scene, visited and enjoyed by many.
'We support our local businesses, but we also take food safety seriously. More Trending
'Our officers work with businesses to ensure high standards are maintained that our residents and visitors expect and deserve.
'This prosecution shows our commitment to being a safe and fair borough and we won't hesitate to act against those businesses who don't play by the rules.'
Metro has attempted to contact Mr Thomson-Moore for comment.

Angry mob launch 'racist attack' on staff starting shift at migrant hotel
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Authorities are investigating a 'racially motivated' attack against security staff at a migrant hotel after video of the bloodied workers went viral. A group of locals showed up outside the Bell Hotel in Epping to protest the housing of migrants there, after a resident of the hotel was charged with multiple crimes a week after arriving in the UK. Ethiopian man Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, 38, has been charged with three counts of sexual assault, one count of inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity, and one count of harassment without violence. Kebatu lives at the hotel and has since been remanded in custody after his hearing last week, but denies any wrongdoing. The crimes have enraged the local community, who met outside the hotel on Sunday, with counter-protesters from Waltham Forest Stand Up To Racism on the opposite side. But a video of the demonstrators attacking a man who was walking to work in the hotel has gone viral, prompting police to launch an investigation. A spokesperson from Essex Police told Metro no arrests have been made, but added: 'We are investigating the assault of two members of security staff working at The Bell Hotel, in Epping, and are treating the offences as racially aggravated. 'The assaults took place at a nearby bus stop in High Road, at around 8 pm on Sunday, July 13.' The two security guards had arrived to begin their shift and were set upon by a group of men. 'The two victims then managed to make their way past the protest into the hotel, where there was a significant policing presence, for safeguarding and to seek aid,' they added. 'Both victims have received hospital treatment for serious injuries, which are thankfully not life-threatening or life-changing. We will not tolerate violent incidents of this nature. 'An extensive investigation is underway to identify those responsible, led by our detectives. Our investigation suggests the offences were racially aggravated. We are acutely aware and understand that emotions within the community are running high. 'However, crime of any sort committed by anyone will not be tolerated. We continue to have a significant policing presence in the area to keep people safe.' Local community leaders are still raising concerns about the hotel. Chris Whitbread, the leader of Epping Forest District Council, said they warned the Home Office that the site was 'entirely inappropriate'. 'Placing vulnerable individuals from a wide range of cultural backgrounds into an unsupervised setting, in the centre of a small town, without the proper infrastructure, support or services, is both reckless and unacceptable,' he said. 'It puts pressure on local services, causes understandable concern for residents, and is unfair on those placed in the hotel. The Home Office must now face the reality of the situation.' Adam Brooks, who was at the protest, told Metro he didn't witness any violence, but did witness locals 'voicing their concerns and anger'. 'I had women tell me that they'd been flashed while walking their dogs, and many also say that they'd been harassed by men from the hotel,' he claimed. 'I had nothing to do with organising this or even knowing who did, I was there to report the protest, and if I'm honest, I was there as a worried local father. 'Violence is wrong under any circumstances. This isn't about skin colour, race or religion, it is about public safety, especially that of our children locally.' Adam said 12-15 counter protesters allegedly called the group 'far-right Nazi scum', which he says didn't help the already high tensions. More Trending The Bell Hotel declined to comment on the matter to Metro. Last year, similar scenes unfolded outside of a migrant hotel in Rotherham when far-right rioters attempted to break into the building in the aftermath of the Southport killings. In videos shared online, the mob was seen throwing bricks and chairs at officers with riot shields, before smashing windows and entering the building while chanting 'Yorkshire, Yorkshire'. Members of the mob, who waved Union flags and the St George's Cross, taunted police in the car park of the hotel. I was there when Jay Slater's body was found a year ago today – why case still haunts me & what I really think happened
"YOU covered Jay Slater, didn't you?" It's a question I've been asked time and again for the best part of a year now. 11 Jay Slater's body was found on July 15, 2024 - 29 days after he went missing Credit: Ian Whittaker 11 The spot where the teenager tragically fell to his death 11 Jay Slater's mum Debbie Duncan with The Sun's Katie Davis Credit: Louis Wood 11 Grief-stricken Debbie wept as she opened up about her beloved son's disappearance and death Credit: Louis Wood And every time it makes my stomach churn as their eyes light up, hoping I will lift the lid on the ridiculous conspiracy theories they've lapped up. Jay's story is one I have followed from the moment he went missing in Tenerife on June 17 last year - and it is one of those cases that will never leave me. I was never convinced by the relentless armchair detectives - nor the outlets that regurgitated baseless theories. Outrageous claims include that Jay skipped the island on a yacht, fell foul of a drug cartel, and had been tied up hostage with chains. Jay's grieving mum wept as she opened up to me following his untimely death - and as I looked her in the eyes, I could feel the unspeakable toll of pain she was suffering. I was the only reporter in the mountains of Masca when police confirmed Jay's body had been found, and I can still feel the shock pulsing through me after a long 29-day search. But my overriding feeling was one of hope - praying it would bring the closure Jay's courageous family so badly needed. As reporters, we get a lot of stick - and trust me, I have had my fair share. But what is often forgotten is that the overriding purpose of our jobs is to fight for the truth - and filter out misinformation that is all too easily spread in this social media age. It feels like every single person I encounter has their theory on what happened to Jay - largely and sadly, informed by keyboard warriors. JAY SLATER KATIE DAVIS PTC I shut them down before they unleashed a rant at me, spewing idle comments they've picked up from going down a rabbit hole on Facebook or TikTok. Naturally, I am asked for my opinion. I'm cautious to give my judgement on stories I cover - not least to give naive minds anything to latch onto. But deep down, my gut is - and has always been - that this is a very tragic story of a British tourist falling to their death on holiday. This was a 19-year-old lad away from home for the first time with pals who, yes, drank, took drugs and probably had a bit too much fun. I feel logic is the main component missing from most trolls' arguments. Jay had been drinking and had taken drugs, and when he left the Airbnb on the morning of June 17, he had probably not slept for a fair while. Add on top of having alcohol and drugs in your system, being dehydrated, and in an unfamiliar, remote area, it's not the prettiest picture. To make matters worse, the mountainous setting of the Airbnb is hugely unforgiving. 11 Debbie with childhood photos of Jay Credit: Louis Wood 11 Jay pictured beaming in his school uniform Credit: Louis Wood 11 The remote Airbnb that Jay went to after partying Credit: Steve Reigate 11 It's violently hot and windy - enough to make even the most intrepid hiker feel uneasy. Treacherous, stony, winding paths while battling those conditions are not for the faint-hearted, and even I almost lost my footing a few times while walking through the area. Sober and rested, you will probably be fine if you're careful. But for Jay, that wasn't the case - and it ultimately cost him his life. Yet the judgement coming from pathetic wannabe detectives is almost laughable. I can guarantee almost every single crank who mindlessly taps out their thoughts has found themselves in questionable situations after drinking or taking drugs in their youth. And still, a year on, obsessive trolls continue to attempt to make out that something that happened in those final hours was linked to his death. But I am certain Jay fell accidentally. 'Cruel trolls didn't know my Jay' JAY Slater's brave mum Debbie last year hit back at critics and trolls. Just days after Jay's funeral last August, heartbroken Debbie paid tribute to him as a 'loving and popular' 19-year-old who 'had the world at his feet'. She told how Jay was devoted to his family and friends, would always dance at events and had taken her to see Bob Marley film One Love before his tragic disappearance. Debbie told The Sun: "Jay was just a lovely boy with a massive personality. 'Everybody just loved Jay being in his company - family, friends and work. 'He was loving and popular, always full of fun and smiling – and the main guy in the group. "The people saying stuff about him didn't know Jay and they don't know us. 'He hasn't been here to defend himself against all these horrible stories that were going on around the world about him. 'He worked hard, and then at weekends, he loved spending time with his friends. 'But he loved being at home as well. 'He liked cooking and was always in the kitchen with me every night." READ MORE HERE His decisions beforehand may have led him to that, but it doesn't change the fact that he fell. So I wish these idiotic flame-baiters would just leave his family alone and stop causing them further heartache by blindly attempting to connect what he did on his final night out to his death. Yes, Jay's family still desperately deserve answers to those questions hanging over about what actually happened in his last hours. But frankly, armchair detectives have never and will never help - and to be honest, I never bought into the ones claiming that's all they were trying to do. My heart bleeds for his mum Debbie, brother Zak and dad Warren, who are still battling for answers after spineless witnesses failed to show up for his inquest earlier this year. It has now been a year since Jay's body was found in a ravine in Rural de Teno National Park - and if the case still haunts me, I can't imagine how his poor family must be suffering every single day. So please, let them find answers on their own terms and without fear of seeing yet more painful lies plastered across social media. 11 Search crews scoured for Jay for days before he was found Credit: Ian Whittaker 11 Jay was an avid footballer as a child Credit: Louis Wood 11 Jay, right, with older brother Zak and mum Debbie Credit: Solarpix

British pensioner arrested on suspicion of smuggling 60kg of cannabis resin from Spain
A British pensioner has been arrested trying to smuggle more than 60kg of cannabis resin from Spain. Police detained the 69-year-old unnamed Briton after discovering the drugs in a 'hidden' compartment built into the roof of a UK-registered vehicle at Ceuta, Spain's North African enclave, on Sunday evening. The Civil Guard said the car was bound for the port of Algeciras, near Gibraltar. Photos released by the authorities showed dozens of packages containing 62.3kg of cannabis. The packages were branded with names including "dream gelato" and "cereal milk". Authorities searched the vehicle after a sniffer dog helping with routine checks grew visibly agitated near the car, prompting a more extensive search. The suspect has been taken into custody. He will later be brought to court under an alleged drug trafficking offence. A spokesman for the Civil Guard in Ceuta said: 'A total of 62.3 kilos of cannabis resin was discovered in a secret compartment in the roof of the vehicle. 'The driver, a British man born in 1956 who was registered as a UK resident, was subsequently arrested. 'The suspect will now go before a court in Ceuta as the suspected author of a crime of drug trafficking. 'The drugs have been seized and handed over to a central government delegation and the vehicle is now under the supervision of the courts.'
