Ringgit Opens Higher Vs US Dollar, Market Sentiment Improves
By Harizah Hanim Mohamed and Engku Shariful Azni Engku Ab Latif
KUALA LUMPUR, May 13 (Bernama) -- The ringgit opened slightly higher against the US dollar today, supported by positive sentiment from the United States (US)-China diplomatic negotiations on the US tariff, an analyst said.
At 8 am, the local note inched up to 4.2950/3170 versus the greenback against Friday's close of 4.2970/3005.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the US Dollar Index (DXY) climbed more than one per cent to 101.788 points as the US-China trade tension eases.
"The benchmark equities were higher while yields on the US Treasury rose as the risk-on mode became prevalent.
"On that note, the ringgit would see range-bound trade as US-China trade deals suggest the tariff shocks could be better managed via diplomatic negotiations in the months to come," he told Bernama today.
He also noted that the 90-day pause agreed by the US and China to slash tariffs on each other's goods would result in a better outcome for many countries, including Malaysia.
It was reported that the US and China have agreed to lower tariffs on each other's goods for the next 90 days, signalling a potential easing of tensions in their ongoing trade war.
As part of the agreement reached during negotiations in Geneva over the weekend, the US will reduce its additional tariff on Chinese products from 145 per cent to 30 per cent, while China will lower its tariff on American imports from 125 per cent to 10 per cent.

Selangor Aero Park to advance Msia's regional air cargo hub ambitions
Transport minister Loke Siew Fook expressed confidence that more private sector players will invest in expanding aircraft operations at KLIA. (Bernama pic) SEPANG : The development of the Selangor Aero Park (SAP) will strengthen Malaysia's ambition to become a leading air cargo hub in Asean, said transport minister Loke Siew Fook. He said the 600-acre project aligns with the government's strategy to enhance Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) as a regional logistics and aerospace centre. Loke said KLIA holds a unique strategic advantage, with a vast land area of 100 sq km and strong connectivity, making it an ideal location for such a development. 'We possess the ingredients and prerequisites unmatched by any other Asean country. KLIA has the potential to expand to five runways (beyond the existing three). 'There is no other airport in the region of this scale,' he said at a press conference following the groundbreaking ceremony for SAP earlier today. Located within the KLIA Aeropolis, SAP carries a gross development value of RM2.3 billion and will be executed in phases to ensure a well-structured, future-ready investment ecosystem. The project is expected to contribute RM55.2 billion annually to the aerospace industry and create over 32,000 high-income jobs by 2030. Elaborating further, Loke said Malaysia has also secured support from China to position KLIA as a regional cargo hub for the Asean market. 'China has agreed to support KLIA as its cargo gateway for the Asean region. This is a highly strategic and significant partnership. 'We also aim to attract investments from aerospace supply chain industries, which includes the production of aerospace components, related technologies, and MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) services,' he said. He expressed confidence that more private sector players will invest in expanding aircraft MRO operations at KLIA. To support this vision, he said the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia is currently reviewing KLIA's air traffic control system to address the anticipated increase in both passenger and cargo flight traffic. 'We anticipate a significant increase in air traffic at KLIA, involving both passenger and cargo aircraft. A comprehensive redesign of the air traffic control system is currently under way to enhance operational efficiency and optimise traffic management,' he said. On a separate matter, Loke added that an announcement on the KLIA Aerotrain project will be made soon.

Namibia to strengthen partnership with China at economic and trade expo
WINDHOEK, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Namibia will use its participation in the upcoming China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo (CAETE) in China's Hunan Province to deepen strategic partnerships and unlock new development opportunities, the Ministry of International Relations and Trade said Thursday. "Our active participation underscores our commitment to building strategic partnerships with all our development and trading partners, that will unlock opportunities for our citizens and position Namibia as a key player in regional and continental development," the ministry said in a statement. According to the statement, Namibia will take part as one of the guest countries of honor in the 4th CAETE in Changsha, Hunan Province, from June 12 to 15. Flagging CAETE as "a premier platform for economic collaboration between China and Africa," the ministry said "the expo offers Namibian entrepreneurs and investors the opportunity to connect with Chinese business leaders, showcase Namibia's investment opportunities in sectors such as mining, tourism, agriculture and agribusiness, manufacturing renewable energy, and fisheries, as well as exploring new avenues for economic cooperation and private sector collaboration." It also said that Minister of International Relations and Trade Selma Ashipala-Musavyi will lead the country's delegation to the events. "Namibia recognizes the importance of multilateral cooperation platforms like FOCAC and CAETE in fostering sustainable development and sustained economic growth," the ministry said. The events in Changsha are also expected to enhance Namibia's engagement with Chinese investors, support economic diversification, and contribute to the country's long-term development goals.

U.S. short on essentials for factory revival: report
NEW YORK, June 5 (Xinhua) -- The United States lacks nearly every part of the manufacturing ecosystem -- the workers, the training, the technology and the government support -- and in many industries, the undertaking to revive its factories would take years, if not decades, reported The New York Times on Thursday. For example, "American factories are already struggling to fill around 500,000 manufacturing jobs, according to estimates by Wells Fargo economists. They calculate that to get manufacturing as a share of employment back to the 1970s peak that Mr. Trump has sometimes called for, new factories would have to open and hire 22 million people. There are currently 7.2 million unemployed people," noted the report. Another example is the garment industry: there are no mills in the United States on the scale of what it needs, nor major zipper and button suppliers. Some 97 percent of the clothes and shoes that Americans buy are imported for cost reasons. U.S. President Donald Trump "ignited a global trade war on a gamble that taxing other countries' goods would bring jobs and factories 'roaring back' to the United States," said the report, adding that "Trump has exposed the difficulties in closing the vast distances, geographical and logistical, between where many products are made and where they are consumed."
