Dubai Basketball end historic first season with knockout in Belgrade
DUBAI: Dubai Basketball ended their inaugural ABA League season after a 114-97 defeat in the final leg of the semifinal against Serbian powerhouse Partizan.

The team officially set out on their journey in the Adriatic League in September, competing against some of the most prolific sides in Europe. From beating reigning champions Red Star in their opening game to being one of the only teams in the league to beat Partizan twice at their home court, the 2024-25 season was packed with milestones.
The third and final game of the semifinals took place on Sunday night at Belgrade Arena, the home of Partizan, with Dubai determined to capitalize on squaring the series in the previous game.
Dubai opened the game with intensity, taking an early lead as Davis Bertans, Klemen Prepelic, and Nate Mason each sank three-pointers within the first four minutes. By the end of the first quarter, Dubai had stormed ahead with a commanding nine-point lead.
However, the momentum began to shift in the second quarter. With the backing of a packed home crowd, Partizan tightened their defence and gradually closed the gap, reducing Dubai's lead to just a single point by the end of the third quarter.
As the game progressed into the third and fourth quarters, Partizan demonstrated why they are seven-time ABA League champions. Although they surged ahead, Dubai refused to go down without a fight, repeatedly equalising the score and keeping the contest wide open.
In the final quarter, Partizan pulled away, scoring an impressive 28 points that widened the gap to 17 and ultimately secured their place in the finals. Dubai, however, walked away with their heads held high, having challenged one of Europe's top basketball teams to the very end.
Reflecting on the season, Dubai Basketball's head coach, Jurica Golemac, said: 'We must be satisfied. This was our first season, with 13 new players in total. We were fortunate to have selected not only top-quality athletes but also exceptional people who made this journey smoother.
'Throughout the season, we played good basketball. We claimed major wins — including victories over some of the league's giants — and today, we pushed Partizan into a serious battle for a place in the finals. Plans for the future are already underway. In fact, they've been in motion throughout the season. Analysis, planning — it all continues.
'As they say, the off-season begins tomorrow, and so does our preparation for what comes next.'

'While mega-events like the Paris 2024 Olympics (emitted 1.59 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent) and Euro 2024 (generated 490,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent) understandably carry large footprints due to international travel and scale, the Vipers' match sets a benchmark in per capita emissions. At 8.6 kg CO2 equivalent per attendee, this may be among the most climate-conscious fan experiences in professional sport,' said Ben Hardy-Jones, head of sustainability and lead author of the report. Hosted during season 3 of ILT20, the Vipers match featured: 100 percent recycled team and fan kits, made locally; hospitality menus free from red meat, with reduced dairy; biofuel-powered pitch machinery; fan travel emissions limited to under 11 percent of total footprint; water-awareness labelling in hospitality menus; a digital reach of 15.4 million and more than 265,000 engagements, amplifying the sustainability message, with virtually zero additional carbon impact. 'As one of ILT20's founding franchises, we wanted to show how elite sport can lead on climate action without compromising experience,' said Phil Oliver, Desert Vipers CEO and recent Middle East CEO of the Year at the SPIA Awards. 'This wasn't just about lowering emissions, it was about setting a practical example others can follow.' Though the match was a finalist at the Gulf Sustainability Awards 2024 in the 'most sustainable event' category, the data and design of the match are now serving as a template for the wider sports sector, as the Vipers call on teams, leagues and venues to join them in transforming environmental standards. 'This isn't a one-off stunt. It's a model we're evolving every season,' Hardy-Jones said. 'Our report is open-source because we want change across the board, from stadium design to catering decisions. Sport has that power.' With ILT20 season 4 launching on Dec. 2, the Desert Vipers say that they are planning deeper sustainability initiatives and calling on the global cricket community to help make sport a force for environmental good.

UN chief urges Yemen's Houthis to release aid workers
DUBAI: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday demanded Yemen's Houthi militants release dozens of aid workers, including UN staff, a year after their arrest. The Iran-backed militants, who control much of the war-torn country, detained 13 UN personnel and more than 50 employees of aid groups last June. 'I renew my call for their immediate and unconditional release,' Guterres said in a statement issued by the office of his special envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg. 'The UN and its humanitarian partners should never be targeted, arrested or detained while carrying out their mandates for the benefit of the people they serve,' he added. A decade of civil war has plunged Yemen into one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, with more than half of the population relying on aid. The arrests prompted the United Nations to limit its deployments and suspend activities in some regions of the Arabian Peninsula's poorest country. The Houthis at the time claimed an 'American-Israeli spy cell' was operating under the cover of aid groups — an accusation firmly rejected by the UN. Guterres also lamented the 'deplorable tragedy' of the death in detention of a World Food Programme staffer in February. The Houthis have kidnapped, arbitrarily detained and tortured hundreds of civilians, including aid workers, during their war against a Saudi-led coalition supporting the beleaguered internationally recognized government.
