Manchester United do not need a big squad without the Champions League, manager Ruben Amorim said on Tuesday, after the club failed to qualify for Europe's top club competition due to losing the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur last week.
United, who finished 15th in the Premier League after Sunday's 2-0 win over Aston Villa, travelled to Kuala Lumpur the next day, kicking off an Asia tour consisting of two friendlies.
Amorim's team, who face Asean All-Stars on Wednesday before playing Hong Kong on Friday, have travelled with a 32-man squad which features the majority of the first team, including Casemiro, Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes.
"We always prepare two plans. With and without the Champions League," he said.
"Without the Champions League, we also don't need a big squad.
"We can control the squad in a better way.
"Then we have a plan, that is to bring in some new players, but our big plan is to improve the team we have, to improve the academy."
Amorim, who has also taken several academy players on the tour, is confident his team are improving.
"It was the past, so it can be the future. It can't change much because of financial fair play, we are not allowed to do much, even with the Champions League, so we are prepared," he said.
"It's important to stick together.
"We're going to struggle, it's not going to be everything right away, but I can see the team improving and that's the most important thing." (Reuters)

Gauff, Boisson win through at French Open

Gauff, Boisson win through at French Open Coco Gauff celebrates after she beats Madison Keys in the French Open quarterfinal. Photo: Reuters Coco Gauff battled back from a set down to beat Australian Open champion Madison Keys in an error-strewn French Open quarterfinal on Wednesday. That set up a semifinal showdown with France's 361st-ranked Lois Boisson. The second seed Gauff battled past her fellow American 6-7 (6/8), 6-4, 6-1 in a tense last-eight clash littered with a whopping 14 double-faults and 101 unforced errors. "It means a lot, especially getting through this tough match today, it wasn't an easy match and I'm very happy to get through it," Gauff said. "I'm so excited to be in the semifinals back here again and have a lot more work to do. Just savour this one today and then next one tomorrow." Keys came through a tense first set in a tie-break after blowing a 4-1 lead with a double-break, but Gauff upped her level enough to fight back. The 21-year-old was the runner-up to Iga Swiatek in a one-sided showpiece match in 2022. Keys had been hoping to challenge for a second consecutive Grand Slam title, but failed to reach the semifinals in Paris for a second time. Boisson, meanwhile, continued her dream run at Roland Garros, defeating world number six Mirra Andreeva to advance to the final four. Boisson won a thrilling battle 7-6 (8/6), 6-3 against Russian Andreeva. (AFP)

TikTokers watch Champions League final for free after 27 hours in stadium toilet

A pair of Belgian TikTokers said they spent 27 hours in an Allianz Arena toilet last weekend before watching Paris Saint-Germain beat Inter Milan 5-0 in the Champions League final for free. Advertisement Neal Remmerie and Senne Haverbeke told VRT News they managed to get into the Munich stadium the day before the match and hid in a toilet cubicle. After sticking a home-made 'Out of Order' sign on the door, the pair waited in silence for more than a day as stadium staff used the facility. 'We had a backpack with snacks and we played around on our phones to kill time,' Remmerie told the Belgian public broadcaster. 'The lights were on all the time and the sitting position was uncomfortable, so sleeping was almost impossible. That made it physically and mentally difficult.' Advertisement Once they heard fans arriving and using the toilets on match day, the pair left their bolt-hole and made their way past ticket inspectors to join the 86,600 crowd in the stands.

Man City sign Milan midfielder Reijnders for 55m euros

Man City sign Milan midfielder Reijnders for 55m euros Tijjani Reijnders shows off his most valuable player award for the season in Milan. File photo: AFP Manchester City have agreed a deal to sign Netherlands midfielder Tijjani Reijnders from Serie A side AC Milan on a five-year contract worth 55 million euros, a team source confirmed on Wednesday. The 26-year-old Reijnders joined Milan in 2023 on a five-year contract, which he further extended until 2030 in March. He has made 104 appearances for the club in all competitions, winning one Italian Supercup title. He impressed during the 2024-25 season, scoring 15 goals in all competitions as he was named the Serie A's best midfielder, despite Milan finishing eighth in the league. Reijnders has also made 22 appearances for the Netherlands. His signing will boost Pep Guardiola's options in midfield following Kevin De Bruyne's departure, who will leave after a decade at the club having lifted six Premier League titles, as well as winning the Champions League and Club World Cup in 2023. City finished third in the 2024-25 Premier League season and only secured a Champions League berth on the final day of the campaign. They are next in action at the Club World Cup and face Wydad AC in their opening game on June 18, before taking on Al-Ain and Juventus in their Group G fixtures. (Reuters)
