
Miracle oasis: Hero's breakthrough for parched community
Maddi-Tolop means 'rocky area' in Konkani. Balakrishna Aiya, now 76, did not resign himself to water scarcity just because hope seemed to have dried up at Maddi-Tolop. His flash of human insight bypassed stony engineering dilemmas and the well he envisioned serves 25 Loliem families today
A well in the modest home of Balakrishna Aiya at Maddi-Tolop ripples like a life spring amid unyielding rocks, epitomising one man's determination to drill through stony impossibilities to quench a community's thirst.
Visitors to Aiya's home at Loliem, Canacona, are forgiven for missing the significance of the well outside. Then they learn the extraordinary story behind it. This nondescript water source represents far more than a simple utility; it stands as the testament to one man's refusal to accept that fate gives no chance to ingenuity.
Idyllic but arid site
'As the name suggests, Maddi-Tolop means 'rocky area' in Konkani,' explains Aiya, 76, his weathered hands gesturing toward the well that has become the stuff of local legends.
'Everyone said digging a well here was impossible,' he says.
The geological challenges were indeed formidable. Engineers and water experts had long written off the area due to its treacherous layers: a rocky upper crust, followed by clay, and then solid black stone beneath.

or years, residents of this idyllic hamlet had resigned themselves to water scarcity. But Aiya saw possibility where others saw only stone.
Elegant idea breaks hard ground
'I studied the land carefully,' he recalls, eyes narrowing with the memory of those tough old times. 'Then I had an idea nobody had tried before.'
His innovation was practical yet revolutionary in its functionality. Once workers reached the hostile clay layer, Aiya designed an unprecedented safety feature.
It was a stairway from the ground level down to that depth, creating an escape route for workers who could then dig deeper, secure in the knowledge that they had a way out if the earth became unstable.
'Everybody thought I was wasting money,' Aiya reminisces, with that twinkle in his eyes that's impossible to miss. 'But when water emerged from that rocky ground, it was like watching a miracle,' he says.
The well was built, but it was just the beginning of Aiya's mission. Not content with solving his own water problems, he laid pipelines connecting his water source to neighbouring households.

Wellspring of social service
Today, over 25 families at Maddi-Tolop have access to clean water because of one man's engineering intuitions and community spirit.
This achievement encapsulates the essence of Aiya — artist, innovator, and unlikely hero whose journey through life has been defined by transforming necessity into innovation at every turn.
His life's trajectory began in the paddy fields. As a young man, he would strategically select the fields to till based on potential earnings. Later, when he discovered schools were hiring art teachers, he completed the elementary drawing teachers' course at Sadashivgad,
Karwar — passing with distinction.
Artist, inventor, conservator
For 17 years, he taught at Shraddhanand Vidyalaya at Poinguinim before taking voluntary retirement in 2002. To supplement his earnings, he began crafting Ganapati idols — about 30 every Ganesh Chaturthi. 'Crafting the idols connected me to our cultural roots,' says Aiya, who also serves as a pandit, performing pujas and guiding families through important rituals.
He is often at the local temple early every morning.
His deep knowledge of the scriptures is sought after by families for life's most important ceremonies.
'Making Ganapatis alone wouldn't have sufficed,' he says. 'The demand lasts only for Ganesh Chaturthi.'
While performing pujas, drawing portraits, making clay idols, and teaching, Aiya continued seeking additional ways to support his family. That search led him to an unexpected passion, broom-making.
Broom-making turns arty

Loliem.
His fingers move with rhythmic precision, twisting and securing each strand with practised ease. His hands move with dexterity that belies his age of 76.
'Watch,' he says, brandishing a peculiarly shaped knife that resembles no standard cutting tool. 'This is my own design. It trims the ribs at exactly the right angle,' he says.
Within minutes, he transforms what looks like an ordinary bundle of dried palm fronds into what locals insist is the finest broom in Canacona.
The secret lies in a special binding technique and custom grip that Aiya perfected after years of experimentation.
'Feel the balance, the beauty and the strength,' he says, extending his creation. The broom indeed sits differently in hand — lighter at the sweeping end, with a perfectly contoured grip that feels custom-made for the palm.
'Pull as you might, the grip won't separate from the broom,' he says. 'This broom will last several times longer than the ordinary ones.'

Creating culture custodians
His handcrafted brooms have become coveted household items, selling for Rs 250-300 each. Producing between two and six brooms daily, Aiya has transformed a common cleaning tool into an art form that generates meaningful income.
But like his approach to the impossible well, Aiya's vision extends beyond personal success. He is keen to pass on his sustainable craftsmanship to the younger generation.
His vision is ambitious: introduce broom-making in schools as a skill-based course, creating what he calls 'an army of 400-500 experts' who can preserve and evolve this practical art form.
'Besides learning sustainable craftsmanship, things provided abundantly by nature are put to judicious use,' he says.
When not crafting brooms, painting, or conducting rituals, Aiya has experimented with grafting hundreds of mango varieties across Canacona and continues exploring new innovations in traditional crafts.
Knowledge is for giving
His contributions have not gone unnoticed. In 2010, he received the Kala Gaurav Puraskar for his artistry, and in 2023, the Goa State Biodiversity Board recognised his work in preserving traditional knowledge and sustainable practices.
Yet sitting among his tools and innovations, awards seem far from Aiya's mind. His worn hands never stop moving — whether binding brooms, sketching portraits, or blessing families through sacred rituals.
'What good is knowledge if it dies with you?' he says to articulate his philosophy. 'What good is innovation if it doesn't help your neighbour?'

Konkani Text Corpus project launched to preserve language online
Mangaluru: In order to treasure the original language and ensure its presence on the digital platform, the World Konkani Centre, Shaktinagar, is undertaking the Konkani Text Corpus Project. The project, which is already underway and is likely to be completed within a few months, aims to add 2,000 small sample write-ups of 100 words each in GSB Konkani, along with equivalent translations in English. It will be available online, accessible from anywhere in the world. B Devadas Pai, coordinator of the project, explained the need to go digital with the Konkani Text Corpus. He said that before Portuguese rule began in Goa, Konkani was the spoken language of those who migrated southwards. Over the past five to six centuries, it has been losing its linguistic documentation. As a result, the GSB Konkani people here have been distancing themselves from the Konkani of Goa. This unique dialect is considered the original form of Konkani, closely related to Prakrit. The World Konkani Centre is now actively working in this direction and has undertaken a project to prepare a large-scale text corpus. "We have selected an age group above 40 to 60 years for the project, who will write and provide the sample text. The exercise will provide us with Konkani sentences as well as a large vocabulary collection and help to preserve the language," he said. To carry out the project, selected individuals from various parts of undivided Dakshina Kannada, including Konkani graduates, postgraduates, and literature enthusiasts, have been trained over several rounds to prepare 100-word articles from various fields. Each article will have a headline with at least four words, ensuring it is easily available while browsing. These writings will be in the Devanagari script registered with the UGC, accompanied by an English translation. Nandagopal Shenoy, the president of the World Konkani Centre, has taken a special interest in this initiative, according to Pai. The corpus will assist in studying which words are most frequently used in the language, collected from various sources. How community journals are soldering on against winds of change
MUMBAI: In a city where identities jostle as tightly as commuters on a local train, Mumbai's regional, community-based publications continue to thrive—quiet sentinels of memory, language and belonging. While 'Parsiana', the polished SoBo journal of Zoroastrian life, is perhaps the most well-known with its global readership, it is within the pages of the less celebrated but equally vibrant Marathi, Gujarati and Konkani periodicals that the city's diverse inner lives find an expression. While Urdu journal 'Shayar' folded up after a 93-year run in 2023, 'Kalnirnay' stands out as a rare success. Consider 'Marmik', the Marathi weekly founded in 1960 by Bal Thackeray. Initially conceived as a political cartoon magazine, it quickly transformed into a platform for Marathi pride and grievance—what the late Sena supremo described as 'anxieties of a community pushed to the margins of its own city'. It eventually galvanised a linguistic identity into a political force, showing the mettle of regional publications. But beyond political assertion lies a quieter world of Marathi magazines and journals. 'Society newsletters, temple magazines and monthly cultural journals continue to hum gently,' says Dr Vidyesh Kulkarni, a Pune-based scholar who chronicled these for his doctoral thesis in 1991. He points to titles such as 'Sahyadri', 'Antarpat' and 'Deepstambh', which offer poetry, short fiction, essays on saints and rituals, and commentary on theatre and literature. 'Produced by cultural mandals, these magazines circulate through homes, temples and libraries—carrying the scent of agarbatti and old paper. They are cultural bridges between generations.' However, Kulkarni notes a growing fragmentation. 'There's a tendency I call 'sociocultural meiosis and mitosis' — where every sub-group within a community demands its own platform. In the age of WhatsApp and social media, this proliferation is becoming unsustainable.' Among Marathi publications, 'Kalnirnay' stands out as a rare success. For 53 years, it has had a pan-Maharashtra presence. 'It began as a way to democratise the panchang, but quickly became more than an almanac,' says Shakti Salgaonkar, the current director. 'The back pages featured writers like Durgabai Bhagwat and P L Deshpande. We've included recipes, lifestyle columns, even train timetables.' So deeply woven is 'Kalnirnay' into the Maharashtrian ethos that its jingle is played on the shehnai at weddings and naming ceremonies. Mumbai's Gujarati-speaking communities offer a similarly layered ecosystem. 'Kutchi Patrika', a newsletter for the Kutchi Jain community, has run for over 60 years. 'It's our mainstay for news, obituaries and event updates,' says Kanji Savla Vamik, part of the team that produces and distributes it. 'It's particularly vital to the Kutchi Visa Oswal Jain community, whose ties stretch across the world.' Religious institutions also publish journals — 'Anand Yatra', 'Shree Yamuna Krupa', 'Vallabh Ashray'—distributing discourses, festival calendars, and moral reflections. 'We tried to keep the younger generation connected,' says Hemal Rawani, who edited 'Raghuvansham' till it shut in 2005. 'But it's a losing battle—they don't even want to learn the language.' His lament finds an echo in Hamid Siddiqui who recalls with anguish the folding up of the Urdu 'Shayar' after a 93-year inning. 'Despite being a top-notch literary publication, it was becoming increasingly unsustainable to produce and we had to stop in 2023,' he says, recounting how his family still 'has sack-loads of the mail' from the readers. 'I wonder why none of them came forward to keep 'Shayar' going…' Among Mumbai's Konkani-speaking communities—Catholics, Goud Saraswat Brahmins, and others—journals have long served as spiritual and cultural anchors. Weekly 'Raknno', printed in Roman-script Konkani since 1938 and distributed from Mangalore to Mumbai, blends religious reflection, fiction and news, often touching on migration, memory, and the sea. Closer home, 'Voice of GSB', a monthly GSB Konkani magazine, features articles on festivals, recipes, wedding traditions and proverbs. What binds these publications—across language, caste, and faith—is their intimacy. They are not driven by TRPs or algorithms. Their contributors are often retired teachers, community elders or enthusiastic youth. Their pages, modest in print and design, pulse with lived experience. 'They are guardians of language in a city where English and Hindi often drown out the subtler cadences of mother tongues,' says Dr Kulkarni. 'In their pages, Marathi, Gujarati and Konkani breathe—not as relics, but as living entities that argue, console and dream.' To read them is to walk the bylanes of Matunga, Dadar, Girgaon and Mahim, listening in on the inner life of communities that built this city long before it reached for the skies.
