Test torment over for Wales with Brave Blossoms win

Perth Now12-07-2025
Wales have finally won a rugby Test and snapped an 18-match international losing streak, holding off Japan 31-22.
The Welsh looked like they were going to blow it again when their 24-10 lead was cut to 24-22 by Japan with 17 minutes remaining on Saturday.
But Wales used a Josh Macleod ruck turnover to get back into the Japan 22 and pressure and desperation earned a 74th-minute try for flyhalf Dan Edwards. The first-time Test starter converted his try and was a perfect five-for-five off the tee.
The nine-point margin and sterling defence in sweltering heat were finally enough to get Wales to fulltime.
"We knew it was 18 successive defeats but this is a young group and there's a lot more to come from us," Edwards told S4C channel.
"It was amazing to score. I was just glad to catch the ball!. I'm just so glad we won."
Wales had gone 644 days since their last win in October 2023 against Georgia at the Rugby World Cup. Their losing run left them tied with France's losing streak from 1911-20 as the longest by a major team in Test rugby history.
Winger Josh Adams was a standout for Wales, scoring the opening try and setting up the second of a first-half double for scrumhalf Kieran Hardy before being replaced at halftime.
Hardy scored in the 27th minute and again in the 35th, while Japan No.8 Faulua Makisi was in the sin bin, as Wales opened a 21-3 lead.
But with Makisi back and a new front row on, Japan struck just before halftime with a try to replacement tighthead Shuhei Takeuchi.
A 40m Edwards penalty after the break made it 24-10 then Japan came roaring back.
Lock Warner Dearns scored at the end of a long attack started by his chargedown, and centre Dylan Riley scooped a dropped overhead catch by Edwards and ran from halfway to score between the posts.
But Macleod's turnover started a last resurgence and the Welsh prevailed.
They looked spent and clung to each other in celebration.

British & Irish Lions vs First Nations & Pasifika XV LIVE updates: Test hopefuls put it all on the line at Marvel Stadium

Latest posts Latest posts 6.57pm Beale to lead, Wallaby absent for historic Lions clash Kurtley Beale will captain the First Nations and Pasifika side against the British and Irish Lions while Pete Samu's absence has been confirmed for the Marvel Stadium clash. Beale, who has 96 Test caps, missed the Western Force's clash with the Lions due to a hamstring injury. But the 36-year-old is set to lead the first-of-its-kind side in Melbourne on Tuesday, 12 years after featuring for the Wallabies on the Lions' last visit. Fellow Test talents Brandon Paenga-Amosa, Taniela Tupou, Darcy Swain, Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, Seru Uru, Charlie Gamble, Lalakai Foketi and Filipo Daugunu are also set to suit up for the clash. But Samu, the former Brumbies star who's set to return from France to Australian rugby with the NSW Waratahs next season, will not join them. The versatile backrower featured in the AUNZ Invitational outfit earlier in the season and remains in Wallaby calculations amid a 15-Test calendar year. But, citing 'rules and regulations' around the revised fixture that was created after the Melbourne Rebels were shut down last year, he was denied an encore by the Lions while he waits to team up with his next Super Rugby side, the Waratahs. It's understood the revised pre-tour agreement allowed the Lions to have final say on who was selected for the clash. The move comes after the Lions began the tour by calling out Rugby Australia for not releasing more Test talents to feature in tour games against the visitors. Having come to grips with the setback, coach and 60-Test Wallabies great Toutai Kefu is keen to 'make history' against a Lions squad playing in between the Brisbane and Melbourne Tests. 'The team has a really nice feel to it, with a blend of not only youth and experience, but also cultures,' he said. 'It's an opportunity for the players involved to press their cases forward for higher honours, so everyone will be keen to make an impression. 'The Lions have shown how strong they are on this tour. 'No matter who plays, they will be very hard to beat, but we're not here to make up the numbers. 'We want to win this game and make history.' First Nations and Pasifika: Lington Ieli, Brandon Paenga-Amosa, Taniela Tupou, Darcy Swain, Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, Seru Uru, Charlie Gamble, Tuaina Taii Tualima, Kalani Thomas, Kurtley Beale (c), Filipo Daugunu, David Feliuai, Lalakai Foketi, Triston Reilly, Andy Muirhead. Bench: Richie Asiata, Marley Pearce, Mesake Doge, Mesake Vocevoce, Rob Leota, Harrison Goddard, Jack Debreczeni, Jarrah McLeod. Tonight's weather The roof is on inside Marvel Stadium but it's quite chilly still but the cold wind hasn't made its way into the stadium. 6.54pm Good evening G'day everyone and welcome to our rugby live blog as the British & Irish Lions continue their 2025 tour with a clash against the First Nations & Pasifika team at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne. It's a chilly Tuesday night in Melbourne but the action on the field should be at the highest level as players on both sides chase a place in Saturday's second Test between the Lions and the Wallabies at the MCG. Kickoff is set for 8pm. Enjoy the evening to come.

The snub fuelling First Nations and Pasifika team in battle with Lions

'We all had similar stories. We didn't come from the most wealthy backgrounds, and our parents did as much as they could to put each of us in a position where we could excel in our life ... so in that sense, we definitely connected a lot.' The odds are stacked against the First Nations and Pasifika side due to their limited preparation together and given the ruthless manner in which the Lions took apart the more vaunted AUNZ side. Meanwhile, star prop Taniela Tupou said he is 'at peace' if the Marvel Stadium clash is his last game in Australia. Tupou, who was released from the Wallabies camp to play for the First Nations and Pasifika team, has signed a two-year deal to play for Racing 92 in France at the end of his current contract. There is strong speculation Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt won't call on overseas-bound players for the Rugby Championship, and there would then be no certainty around Tupou's involvement in the Rugby World Cup in 2027. 'Look, I'm here having fun, enjoying it, whatever happens, happens,' Tupou said of his Test future. 'So if I'm back, I'm back and if not, I'm living life, I'm enjoying it. Just play my footy tomorrow and then see what happens after that ... hopefully I will play again, if not, then I'm at peace with it.' The Lions, who named a strong team with Owen Farrell as captain, have spoken about going undefeated on their tour of Australia. But they've also called in five players just to play in this fixture, to protect Test stars. Asked if the First Nations and Pasifika players felt like they being underestimated, hooker Brandon Paenga-Amosa said: 'We know that, we know that very well, we know that they're not really focused on us, and that's okay. 'I guess we don't really want to talk about it too much, we just want to show them what we're made of and what we can do - what we've got essentially,' he said. Paenga-Amosa said the side would need more than a free-flowing Barbarians-style approach to beat the Lions. Gamble and his teammates watched the AUNZ team's 48-point defeat in Adelaide and are motivated to put in a superior performance to create a legacy for the First Nations and Pasifika squad that could follow them on the Lions next tour of Australia.
