Drone technology that assists responders to school shootings is set to be trialed in Florida.
The Campus Guardian Angel is a Texas-based system that while supporting the police and other responders. A trial will be rolled out in three Florida school districts after approval from Governor Ron DeSantis.
Newsweek contacted the governor's office for more information on the policy via email for this story.
Drones Can Be Deployed Within Five Seconds
With more than 60 school shooting incidents reported in Florida alone since 2018, according to the K-12 School Shooting Database, educators and lawmakers have urgently sought innovative approaches to school safety. The introduction of attack drones, designed to respond to active shooter threats in seconds, aims to address the crucial window in which most fatalities occur and could represent a major shift in school security across the U.S.

The drones, stored in secure boxes on campus, can be deployed within five seconds of silent panic buttons being activated. The devices—operated remotely by a team in Texas—provide constant live video feeds to first responders and, in some cases, fire nonlethal projectiles to delay or incapacitate an assailant.
The team in Texas consists of a pilot, who mans the drone, tactical experts who coordinate movement through the school and make decisions on engagement, and liaisons who relay live information to local law enforcement during the response.

Campus Guardian Angel CEO Justin Marston told Newsweek that the drones were equipped with pepper rounds plus a glass breaker, allowing them to quickly navigate inside and outside classrooms.
"We feed live video to police, show exactly what's happening, where the suspect is, and even smash through windows with a glass punch to create distractions. This tactic, like during the SAS's famous hostage rescue [at the Iranian Embassy in London], can give officers a huge advantage," Marston said.
"Currently, an officer's job is to run toward gunfire, alone, with no support or intel—basically a standoff. With our drones, they're not alone; they know what the suspect looks like, what they're doing, and we take point around every corner.
"We usually find the shooter before they do and keep them occupied. Every officer who's seen this live has said they want it."
Pilot Program in Florida
The Campus Guardian Angel drone system was recently demonstrated at both the Leon County Schools District Security Center in Tallahassee and AcadeMir Preparatory High School in Miami-Dade County.
In the demonstrations, the technology was shown to provide immediate situational awareness, allowing police and school safety teams to assess threats before entering the building.
Marston likened the system to having sprinklers in place. "The sprinkler system is able to put water on the fire in seconds because it's already there. You still want the fire trucks to come, you still want the guys with hose pipes to show up—but since sprinkler systems were installed, there hasn't really been a mass fire in a school that killed a bunch of children," he said.
"The last time was 1958. It doesn't happen now because we're able to get...to the problem fast enough before it gets out of hand. It's the same analogy here: we've got the drones in charging boxes, ready to go, and we can fly them on an encrypted channel across the internet.
"It's a bit like that movie The Matrix, where the agent can jump into the nearest person and immediately be good to go. We're a little bit like that—but we're the good guys," he added.
The pilot is being funded by $557,000 in state money as part of Florida's 2025–2026 budget.
Following the successful tests, Campus Guardian Angel is looking to install permanent fixtures this September and October. Live service for the drones in the pilot schools will then begin in January, with multiple teams at the Texas operations center, which provides 24/7 coverage, ready to launch.

The map passed through the Republican-controlled House on a 88 to 52 vote, setting up a new look for the upcoming 2026 midterm elections with the addition of five Republican-leaning congressional districts in the Lone Star State. Still, the map must make its way through the Texas State Senate before it lands on Gov. Greg Abbott's desk. TEXAS DEMS END WEEKSLONG QUORUM STANDOFF IN REDISTRICTING FIGHT Abbott pushed for the creation of a new map to adhere to President Donald Trump's desire to not see a repeat of the 2018 election cycle, where Democrats handily regained the majority in the House and acted as a foil to the president's legislative desires toward the end of his first term. While Republicans control a supermajority in deep-red Texas and already passed the map through the state Senate, Democrats still needed to create a quorum in the House in order to actually move the process along. ABBOTT, TEXAS REPUBLICANS LAUNCH NEW TRUMP-BACKED REDISTRICTING PUSH AS FLEEING DEMOCRATS PLAN TO END WALKOUT Dozens of Texas Democrats fled the state to stall the process, creating a national media frenzy and generating support from Democratic donors, including groups linked to George Soros and Beto O'Rourke, to help pay for their fines, travel and lodging. It generated pushes to have them arrested by Abbott and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, as well as a request from Sen. John Cornyn, R-Tx., to have the FBI track them down and the DOJ to launch an investigation into the political action committees funding their escape. Democratic leaders announced on Monday that they would return for the second special session following California's plan to redraw its maps to soften the blow from the Lone Star State, ending the blockade and allowing Republicans to charge ahead. Texas House Democrats accused the GOP of crafting a map that was illegal and racially discriminatory, and they tried and failed on the House floor to add amendments to the bill that would have halted the process. Despite Democrats' best efforts, Texas House Republicans shot down a dozen amendments to the bill. "Members, it breaks my heart to see how this illegal and rigged, mid-decade redistricting scheme is dividing our state and our country," Rep. Chris Turner, a Democrat, said. These little robots are changing the way solar farms are built, saving time and money
Private renewable energy projects are still moving forward despite a pullback in government support, and new technology is making that construction more efficient. Solar farms, for example, take meticulous planning and surveying, involve long hours and require significant labor. Now, robots are taking on the job. CivDot is a four-wheeled robot that can mark up to 3,000 layout points per day and is accurate within 8 millimeters. The machine can ride over rugged terrain and work through rough weather. It is the brainchild of California-based Civ Robotics. 'Our secret sauce and our core technology is actually in the navigation and the geospatial -- being able to literally mark coordinates within less than a quarter inch, which is very, very difficult in an uneven terrain, outdoor surfaces, and out in the desert,' said Tom Yeshurun, CEO of Civ Robotics. The data for manual surveying is uploaded into the Civ software, then the operator chooses the area they want to mark and presses go. The robot does the rest, saving both time and money. 'The manual surveying equipment, if you use that in the field and you have three crews, they will need three land surveying handheld receivers. That alone is already equal to how much we lease our machines in the field, and all the labor savings is just another benefit,' Yeshurun said. Civ Robotics has more than 100 of these robots in the field that are primarily being used by renewable energy companies, but they are also used in oil and gas. It is currently working with Bechtel Corporation on several solar projects. 'These were usually pretty highly paid field engineers that we would send out there, and they might be able to do 250 or 350 pile marks a day. With the CivDot robot, we're able to do about 1250 a day,' said Kelley Brown, vice president at Bechtel. Brown said the company has used the robot in thick and muddy terrain in Texas and out in the deserts of Nevada. 'And so you have to think about things like the tires, or you may have to think about clearance. Are you trying to get over existing brush and such, across the solar field? So that's one thing that we contemplate. I think the other is, you know, this runs on batteries, so you've got to contemplate battery swaps,' she added. Civ Robotics is backed by Alleycorp, FF Venture Capital, Bobcat Company, Newfund Capital, Trimble Ventures, and Converge. Total VC funding to date is $12.5 million. There are other robotics solutions for markings, but the competition is mostly doing work on highways and soccer fields. Yeshurun said those rivals can't handle the terrains that the solar industry faces as it expands into new territories.
