Toyota Hilux tops list of most stolen vehicles in 2024: VTAREC
TOYOTA's Hilux has been reported as the most stolen four-wheeler last year with 370 units.
According to New Straits Times, the Vehicle Theft and Accident Reduction Council (VTAREC) coordinator Mas Tina Abdul Hamid said the statistics mentioned were based on the insurance companies' reports.
Following the Hilux, Proton Wira and Toyota Fortuner were named as the second and third most stolen four-wheelers, with 142 units and 123 units, respectively.
The list was followed by Proton Iswara (92), which was tied with the Proton Saga (92), Perodua Kancil (89), Ford Ranger (79), which was tied with the Perodua Myvi (79), Perodua Bezza (61), and the Honda Civic (58).
Since the older models of Proton and Perodua were targeted for car theft, Mas Tina believes that they are most likely to be dismantled and used as spare parts to be resold within the country.

Meanwhile, the other branded vehicles on the list were likely smuggled to foreign countries, she said.
Apart from four-wheelers, motorcycles were also added to the list.
Last year, the top 10 most stolen motorcycles were the Yamaha 135LC (528), Yamaha Y15ZR (327), Honda Wave (194), Yamaha 125 (109), Honda C100 (105), Yamaha Lagenda (72), Yamaha Ego (59), Honda EX5 (54), Modenas Kriss (48), and Honda RS150R (16).
However, she said the vehicle theft incidents in the country have been reduced by 10 per cent with 3,925 cases reported in 2024 compared with 4,370 in 2023.
Mas Tina said the criminals' modus operandi have changed, and many of them now hack the key fob, which is a tiny, portable remote control device that runs a remote keyless entry system.
Without a physical key, thieves can use this keyless technology to unlock the vehicle, turn on the engine, and drive away.
Mas Tina suggested that drivers use conventional safety precautions like a steering lock and store their keys in a Faraday pouch, which blocks radio frequencies.
She also advised motorcyclists to use chains to secure their bikes from being stolen.

Civil servant arrested for allegedly scratching neighbours' cars
AMPANG: A civil servant at a public university was arrested for allegedly scratching two neighbours' cars using a key in the parking area of their apartment in Taman Pandan Mewah here. Ampang Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail said the man, 41, is believed to have committed the offences on May 19 and 22, targeting two different cars parked at a particular spot. "The victims, both Malaysian women, had parked their vehicles in the same spot during the separate incidents," he said in a statement today. "On May 19, the victim found scratches on the front and rear right doors of her Honda, but could not identify the culprit. "In the second incident on May 22 about 1am, another victim's cousin parked a Toyota in the same spot and discovered scratches on the rear door about 6.40am." The victims later lodged complaints with the apartment's management, leading to a review of closed-circuit television footage that captured the man walking near the cars. "Following this, police detained the suspect at 5.35pm on Wednesday in the apartment parking area. A bunch of keys believed to have been used to scratch the cars were also seized." The suspect, a university clerk living in the same apartment, is not personally known to the victims. Azam said the motive remains under investigation. The man has no prior criminal record. The case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for causing mischief.

Driver high on meth crashes into oncoming car
KLUANG: A 40-year-old chauffeur with a record of drug offences was arrested after crashing into an oncoming vehicle while under the influence of methamphetamine in Jalan Jaya here on Friday evening. The man is believed to have veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with a Proton Saga driven by a 36-year-old trader. Kluang police chief Assistant Commissioner Bahrin Mohd Noh said the crash happened at 5pm as the suspect, driving a Honda City, was heading to Bandar Kluang from Taman Sri Kluang. "Upon reaching the scene, he swerved into the opposing lane and crashed into the Saga. Both cars suffered major front-end damage," he said in a statement today. The trader, from Taman Sri Kluang, sustained cuts to his hand and body aches, while the suspect escaped unhurt. The suspect tested positive for methamphetamine in a urine test. Background checks showed he had three previous drug-related cases and a criminal record. The case is being investigated under Section 44(1)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of drugs, and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug use.

Rallying-Ogier, Tanak take Sardinia battle of champions into final day
(Reuters) - Sebastien Ogier will be determined to avoid more Rally Italy heartache when he and Ott Tanak, who seized victory by a whisker last year, again duel in Sunday's final stages in Sardinia. Toyota's eight-times world champion ended Saturday's penultimate leg 11.1 seconds clear of his Hyundai rival with four stages and a total of 77.7km remaining before the finish of the Olbia-based event. Last year the Frenchman had a 17.1-second lead at the same point but ended up losing by 0.2 seconds to the Estonian 2019 champion after a puncture in the final stage -- the joint closest finish in world rally championship history. Ogier started Saturday with a 2.1-second lead over Adrien Fourmaux but the Hyundai driver rolled out on the day's fifth of six stages over rocky and dusty roads in the north of the Mediterranean island.
