M&S boss trousered more than £7m last year - before firm was hit crippling cyber attack

Marks & Spencer's boss was paid more than £7million last year – before the firm was hit by a crippling cyber attack. Stuart Machin saw his pay jump to £7.1million in the 12 months to March 29 from £5.1million the previous year. The details, published in the annual report yesterday, came as the High Street stalwart grapples with the fallout from a hack that has left it unable to sell clothes online for more than a month. An M&S spokesman said Machin's pay – which saw his basic salary of £843,000 topped up with bonuses and other awards – 'reflects the strong performance and growth of M&S under his leadership over the last three years'. Machin, 55, and chairman Archie Norman have overseen a dramatic turnaround at M&S. The share price has soared, taking the firm back into the FTSE 100. Profits have hit their highest level for more than 15 years. Machin's salary is set to increase by 2 per cent this year to £866,000. But there are questions over his bonus for the current year after the cyber hack, which the business estimates will cost it £300million. M&S said it is 'reviewing the performance metrics and targets' for its share award plan due to the cyber attack and will disclose these before the end of the year. Shares hit a nine-year high earlier this year, but have plunged by 9 per cent since details of the hack emerged over the Easter bank holiday. Shares yesterday gained 1.6 per cent to 380.3p. Norman said the incident had caused a 'significant' impact which 'will endure for some weeks or even months'. But he added: 'I am confident that in a year's time the cyber incident will prove to have been a bump in the road along the path to growth.' And Machin, who has led the firm since 2022, said: 'There is no change to our strategy and our longer-term plans to reshape M&S for growth and, if anything, the incident allows us to accelerate the pace of change as we draw a line and move on.' Customers' personal data, which is thought to have included names and contact details, was taken by the criminals. And the disruption last month resulted in some empty shelves in shops as well as forcing the retailer to suspend online shopping. Cyber criminals have also targeted the Co-op, Harrods, Christian Dior and Victoria's Secret in recent weeks.

Much-loved music store in major Scots city shuts down after 11 years

Punters will have one last chance to visit the store as it hosts a closing down sale SHUT UP SHOP Much-loved music store in major Scots city shuts down after 11 years A MUCH-LOVED music store in a major Scots city has pulled the shutters down after 11 years. Union Vinyl, located on the Market Brae Steps in Inverness, closed on Saturday, just weeks after celebrating its anniversary. 2 Union Vinyl in Inverness pulled down the shutters on Saturday Credit: Facebook 2 There will be a closing down sale later this week Credit: Facebook The store was known for its extensive collection of albums, though it did not stock music from some of today's most popular artists. Owner Nigel Graham said: 'We do have a certain type of customer. 'If they are into Taylor Swift or whatever, they can quite happily go to HMV for that." Instead, classic albums like Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Blondie's Parallel Lines, and Fleetwood Mac's Rumours would only last a few days on the shelves at Union Vinyl. Nigel explained that rising costs had become "too much" for the independent shop to handle. He told The Press and Journal: 'The cost of living has proved too much. 'Unfortunately, it was just not sustainable to keep the shop going. 'I had been looking to have someone take it over, but no one could get it over the line. 'It takes a special kind of person to do this job. 'It's a passion project. It's not for the money'. Oasis vinyl The business was born out of Nigel's love of collecting records. It began as a pop-up shop on Union Street in Inverness, later moving to Academy Street and eventually settling on Market Brae Steps. In 2021, he opened a second store called Vinyl 2 Vintage in his hometown, Nairn. Despite the second shop's success, the Inverness location has since become financially unviable. He said: 'The overheads are not as high for our shop in Nairn, but in Inverness we were paying a lot more and it just got too much. 'We just weren't getting the customers. 'They say there is this big vinyl resurgence but I don't think there is – we have never really seen the impact of that. 'Big businesses and corporate companies do kill the independent shops.' The Inverness shop was just a stone's throw from where Nigel used to hunt for records as a young man. He said: 'I do feel it's a shame. 'There has been a record shop on Market Brae steps since the 1970s. I think it's a loss of a tradition. 'I would love someone to take it on.' Pulling down the shutters for a final time, employee Robert Ross played David Bowie's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust - the last song of which is Rock 'n' Roll suicide which Nigel described as "quite apt". There will be one final chance to visit Union Vinyl during a closing-down sale on June 6 and 7. However, much of the remaining stock will be transferred to the store on Nairn High Street. Nigel continued: 'I was also stretched between the two shops. That was a factor. 'The shop in Nairn is bigger and better and I will have more time to devote to it now. 'I hope some people will want to cross the divide to Nairn to come look at some vinyl. 'I like to think some of my regular customers will come over.'

Aww, the facelifted Aygo X is now Toyota's littlest hybrid

Aww, the facelifted Aygo X is now Toyota's littlest hybrid Toyota's tough little supermini gets a big transplant… and a GR Sport trim Skip 17 photos in the image carousel and continue reading Turn on Javascript to see all the available pictures. 1 / 17 Toyota has given the little Aygo X a big facelift, introducing hybrid technology and a 'GR Sport' trim level for the first time. Meet the car that wants to be a GR Yaris when it grows up. In looks if not in performance. Because that new e-powertrain is shared with the regular versions of its Yaris and Yaris Cross siblings: a 114bhp 1.5-litre three-pot with a small electric motor and battery all powering the front wheels. It's a mild-hybrid (so it charges itself), and for this outing, Toyota has mounted the battery cell stacks in a longitudinal layout for better packaging. Advertisement - Page continues below Toyota's binned the old 1.0-litre three-pot and manual gearbox, opting instead for a CVT auto. Fret not, because the new hybrid heart gets the Aygo X from 0-62mph in a shade under 10s - an almost five-second improvement over the outgoing ICE-only package. And Toyota reckons the new Aygo X emits just 86g/km (WLTP), making it the lowest-rated non-PHEV around. Quite the stat to boast to friends about. Looks good, too - chunky, robust. The Aygo X's redesigned body sits atop Toyota's GA-B platform, and features more angular headlights and longer overhangs (by 76mm) to accommodate the bigger engine. You'll have a choice of 17/18in alloys to wedge beneath the wider arches, and black paint draped along the roof and rear sections. Inside, it's business as usual: space for four, lots of recycled fabrics for the upholstery and an unchanged 231-litre boot. Fronted by a 7in digital display, other tech includes two USB-C charging ports, a wireless phone charger and Toyota's Safety Sense pack as standard. You know, pre-collision warning, lane assist, emergency stop, that sorta thing. Customers can also update these OTA in a first for the Aygo X. Advertisement - Page continues below As for that GR Sport trim, it won't get any more power, but it will get bespoke shocks and springs, plus a sharper steering setup said to improve cornering dynamics. Visual changes include the 'G-pattern' mesh grille and black bonnet. UK sales will begin towards the end of this year, with further details announced over the coming months.
