Vinicius, Mbappe have to defend: Real Madrid's Alonso

New Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso warned his team's stars including Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe on Wednesday that they must all pitch in defensively.
Last season under Carlo Ancelotti Los Blancos failed to win a major trophy and the Italian was at times exasperated with his forward line's unwillingness to work hard enough for the sake of the team as a whole.

"What I am certain of is that we need and want everyone to defend -- the 11 players on the pitch have to be involved defensively," Alonso told a news conference ahead of Madrid's Club World Cup clash against RB Salzburg.
"They have to get close together, they have to know how we want to press, and without that, things will be very complicated.
"Vini, Jude (Bellingham), Fede (Valverde), Kylian, those up front, the defence has to push forward too."
Ancelotti said last season that he was not concerned if Mbappe pressed or not and wanted the striker to focus on goalscoring.

The 26-year-old netted 43 goals across all competitions in his first season at the Santiago Bernabeu after his move from Paris Saint-Germain.
Real Madrid face Austrian side Salzburg in Philadelphia on Thursday, looking to seal top spot in their final Group H match, but will be without Mbappe.
The French superstar was not named as part of the squad to take on Salzburg as he continues his recovery from a stomach bug.
Mbappe missed the team's first two matches but returned to training on Wednesday.
"I was happy to see him on the (training) pitch, it was the first day he's got his boots back on and has been running, he's doing well, but not enough to play tomorrow with the level that we need," said Alonso.

"He said it himself when we spoke after training, he prefers to be ready for the last 16, he's in the recovery process, he wasn't perfect for tomorrow."
In Madrid's second match, a 3-1 win over Mexican side Pachuca, Brazilian forward Rodrygo was left on the bench, amid speculation he could depart the club this summer.
However Alonso said the Brazilian was still a valuable member of the team.
"He's doing well, he's enthusiastic, it was a technical decision (to bench him) the other day, but Rodrygo is still an important player, we will need him in this Club World Cup," said Alonso.
"He's a special player and he will have a big role at this tournament."

Pep Guardiola issues 'niggles' update on Rodri as recovery continues from knee injury
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has issued further encouragement concerning the ongoing recovery of Rodri at the FIFA Club World Cup this summer. The Spain international and the current holder of the Ballon d'Or award is firmly into the final stretch of his long-standing recovery process from the serious injury that ruled him out of the majority of the last campaign. Advertisement Sustaining a double knee injury and ACL damage during last season's 2-2 draw with Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium in September, follow-up surgery and rehabilitation saw Rodri sidelined until the end of May. But having further stepped up his recovery and competitive action on the pitch at this summer's FIFA Club World Cup, there is a strong hope that the 29-year-old can enter into the 2025/26 European season ready to start matches once again for Manchester City. Before then, the defensive midfielder will look to increase his time spent on the pitch for Pep Guardiola at the Club World Cup, having registered around 70 minutes of action combined against Wydad AC and Al Ain in the first contests of the tournament. Now, speaking to reporters ahead of Manchester City's final group stage game of the tournament, manager Guardiola has issued the latest on the recovering Rodri after another appearance on the pitch for the club last time out. Advertisement 'Rodri can play, cannot play; of course, he's not ready for 90 minutes but he played the last game 30 minutes, 35 minutes,' Guardiola told reporters. 'So he's making steps forward,' he continued. 'In the last three or four days he didn't have some, not problems, niggles that sometimes you have. 'But he's happy that we can add minutes to him.' Following the latest comments from the Manchester City manager, it appears as though the Spain international will once again not start in the club's important encounter against Juventus this week, despite a win needed for top spot in the group. As such, the Catalan head coach could turn towards a range of options for the deep-lying midfield role, including their new signing Tijjani Reijnders – who excelled in his full debut for the club on matchday one against Wydad AC. Other options could also include January recruit Nico Gonzalez, or more seasoned options such as Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva, both of whom have already been called upon at this summer's tournament.

Laporta explains the identity that separates Barcelona from Real Madrid
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has once again stood firm in defence of the club's identity and values, using the latest episode of La Llotja del 125 to share strong words about their long-standing rivalry with Real Madrid. With pride in La Masia and confidence in the club's direction, Laporta made it clear that Barça's philosophy sets them apart. Madrid is power, Barça is freedom Speaking to a group of children during the programme, Laporta addressed the difference between the two Spanish giants with striking clarity. Advertisement 'Madrid has a sense of power, and we have a sense of freedom, a sense of identity,' he said, highlighting how Real Madrid focus more on big-name signings while Barcelona continue to nurture homegrown talent through their famed La Masia academy. 'They're more about signing players, and we have more players from La Masia.' Laporta also looked back fondly on the past season, saying, 'I've enjoyed some incredible generations of footballers and had a great time.' He believes that in Barça's 125th anniversary year, the team achieved something special, calling it 'a glorious season.' Reflecting on the club's playing style, he said, Joan Laporta has nothing but love for Barcelona. (Photo by) Advertisement 'We want the ball to enjoy, to win. We don't give up on being the leader. That's what defines us.' He made a pointed reference to the treble won against Real Madrid this season, noting, 'We played, we enjoyed it. That's one way to explain what Barça is.' Barcelona's return to the top Laporta stressed that perseverance has been the key to Barcelona's resurgence. 'We've faced all the difficulties, and this has been one of the toughest seasons,' he said. Referring to the club's temporary move to Montjuic and the ongoing financial challenges, he praised the fans and members for standing by the team. 'Today, Barça has returned to the world's top ranks; we are once again a benchmark,' Laporta proudly declared. He gave credit to everyone involved for pushing through the obstacles. Advertisement Reinforcing Barcelona's unique identity, Laporta added, 'Barça is more than a club today,' stressing that it's still owned by its members. 'I don't say that romantically, because it's the best form of association,' he said. He dismissed critics who question the club's structure, claiming their strategies come from 'hidden agendas.' Laporta's comments serve as a powerful reminder of what makes Barcelona different, not just a club that wins, but one that stands for something much deeper. Source: Mundo Deportivo

Flyers Miss Out On Egregious J.J. Peterka Trade
The Flyers were rumored to be interested in J.J. Peterka. (Photo: Kyle Ross, Imagn Images) Yeah, the Philadelphia Flyers can't simply go out and trade for everyone they want, but the J.J. Peterka trade between the Buffalo Sabres and Utah Mammoth will leave many fans scratching their heads. Advertisement On Wednesday night, multiple reports indicated that the Mammoth and Sabres had agreed to a swap of players, with Peterka heading to Utah and forward Josh Doan and defenseman Michael Kesselring heading to Buffalo. Immediately after, it was reported that Peterka agreed to a five-year contract with the Mammoth worth $7.7 million annually. Peterka, 23, scored a career-high 68 points this season in addition to 27 goals. The young German isn't much of a power play producer and is equal parts defensive liability and speed demon. All in all, Peterka is a buccaneering player with some warts, but also dynamite offensive potential that allows him to turn games on their heads in a flash - literally. Advertisement Peterka had previously been linked to Philadelphia in some very recent Flyers trade rumors, though the price was said to be too great. Flyers Have New Trade-Up Possibility in NHL Draft Flyers Have New Trade-Up Possibility in NHL Draft If the Philadelphia Flyers wish to move up in the first round of the 2025 NHL Draft, the Los Angeles Kings have presented them a golden opportunity to do so. Well, unless the Flyers were adamant about not giving up a specific player, the price really wasn't that great. Doan will become a good middle-six winger at his peak, though his true ceiling in terms of production remains questionable. Kesselring is who he is: a big, 6-foot-5 right-shot defender, which the Sabres need, and a player with good underlying analytics at that. Advertisement After the Trevor Zegras trade, the Flyers didn't get greedy with Peterka, though the price, at least on the surface, appeared to be more than reasonable. Hypothetically, if the Flyers traded for and signed Peterka in addition to Zegras, they'd still have roughly $7.3 million in remaining cap space to sign Cam York and Jakob Pelletier. And that's with Ivan Fedotov still on the NHL roster and Ryan Ellis not on LTIR. Given Peterka's player profile, it's likely the Flyers see Owen Tippett as their own version of him, and they've already invested in Tippett with an eight-year, $49.6 million deal. Advertisement The big difference is that Tippett, who is, in fairness, much more physical, has yet to flirt with 60 points, while the younger Peterka nearly reached 70 points playing on the disaster that was the Buffalo Sabres this season. Regardless of if it's Tippett or Peterka, the Flyers, now led by a new voice in Rick Tocchet, still need to find ways to coax more consistency out of their rush-dependent forwards. If they can't, it doesn't matter which players they trade for and how cheap they came on the NHL trade market.
