Anwar condemns ‘malicious' assault on Rafizi's son, urges swift action
'We are still reeling from incidents of bullying in schools, and now another deeply regrettable act has emerged,' Anwar said in a statement on Facebook today.
The prime minister confirmed that he had contacted Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to ensure that the matter is investigated thoroughly and without delay.
'I have contacted Home Minister, Saifuddin Nasution, to ensure a transparent and prompt investigation,' he added.
Anwar also extended his well-wishes to the family.
'I pray for the best well-being for Rafizi and his family,' he said.
Police have confirmed that the 12-year-old son of the former minister was assaulted at a shopping mall in Putrajaya this afternoon.
Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the incident is believed to have occurred at 2pm at the mall's pick-up and drop-off area.
'The incident occurred when the victim was reportedly with his mother and their driver,' he told Bernama.
Shazeli added that the boy is undergoing further examination at a hospital in Selangor.
Investigations are ongoing, and police are reviewing closed-circuit television footage from the scene.

Fahmi, who is also the Communications Minister, said the matter had been discussed with Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa and Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif, with all requirements already approved. 'I visited the families involved; there are 14 families currently placed in a temporary relief centre. Alhamdulillah, in a short period, the Federal Territories Minister and the Kuala Lumpur Mayor approved the relocation of the eligible families to transit homes. 'The approval has been given and my office has received contributions from TNB, through which we will assist the affected families,' he told the media after the Pantai Dalam Community @ Arts and Culture Empowerment Programme here today. Fahmi said DBKL will also help cover the first six months' rent for the victims. 'My office will continue to communicate with these families to ensure, first, that they know how to obtain the keys so they can move in. 'Second, any deposits imposed by DBKL will be covered by me. So, insyaallah, they won't have to pay anything. I will help pay for it so that they can begin rebuilding their lives in a slightly brighter environment. 'I also hope we can take a little time to pray for them to remain resilient and able to get back on their feet, insyaAllah,' he said. Sarawak's push for English in its schools on the cards in MA63 talks tomorrow, says DPM Fadillah
KUCHING, Aug 17 — Sarawak's bid to expand the use of English in schools will be among the main issues discussed at the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) Technical Committee meeting in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the demand was among the main matters to be raised by Sarawak representatives at the meeting, Malay news agency BH Online reported today. He said the discussion would include education policy challenges that currently limit the implementation of teaching in English. 'Tomorrow I will hear the report at the MA63 technical committee meeting and one of the matters brought up is related to the education field demanded by Sarawak,' he was quoted as saying after the Madani Executive Talk Programme at the Sarawak branch of the Aminuddin Baki Institute here today. Fadillah explained the talks aim to find ways to facilitate the teaching of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in English in Sarawak. He said one possible approach would be to maintain the national policy while introducing improvements or special provisions for Sarawak. 'Maybe we maintain the basic policy but add enhancements according to Sarawak's needs,' he was quoted as saying. He added that the autonomy sought is not full independence but a level deemed appropriate, to be decided at tomorrow's meeting. The MA63 technical committee is also expected to discuss other matters, including the proposed Sarawak Cancer Centre and healthcare infrastructure needs in the state.
