Hong Kong will make history next month by hosting the first-ever Saudi Super Cup to be staged in East Asia, and could potentially feature superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
The four-team tournament will take place from August 19 to 23 at the Hong Kong Stadium.
The action kicks off on August 19 with a highly anticipated clash between league champions Al-Ittihad and Al-Nassr, whose squad currently includes Ronaldo.
The following day sees last year's Super Cup champions Al-Hilal face off against Al-Qadsiah.
The tournament culminates with the final on August 23.
Eric Fok, chairman of the Football Association of Hong Kong, China, hailed the event as a significant milestone, proving the SAR's capability to stage major international sporting events.
He expressed strong confidence in a full house, citing Hong Kong's renowned passion for football.
"By hosting this event, I'm sure that we'll bring in lots of tourism. Secondly, Hong Kong, we have a big heart for developing sports, especially in football," he said.
"Recently, a local team playing against India, we had a filled-up stadium and it really reflects the passion for Hong Kong people for football."
Fok added that the tournament also signifies deepening ties between Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia.
"I believe this is only the beginning. This arise from last November [when] we signed the MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) to see how do we cooperate and partner going forward," he said.
"We know Saudi Arabia is hosting the 2034 World Cup and they are preparing for that.
"In terms of the team, in terms of the federation of preparing for this world-scale tournament , there's many areas that Hong Kong can learn and cooperate with them. I believe this cup just symbolises the partnership that we have. Going forward, it should be more exciting for Hong Kong football."
Tickets for the tournament will go on sale from July 15.

China's football team flopped in World Cup 2026 bid. Now officials launch esports version
Chinese football chiefs have revealed plans to launch a national esports team – and have been mocked by social media users who said that the body had done enough damage to the sport in the country. The Chinese Football Association (CFA) said on Monday that the team would compete in 'events organised by Fifa, the Asian Football Confederation and other organisations'. The CFA sacked national coach Branko Ivankovic after a 1-0 defeat to Indonesia that effectively ended the country's hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. China have appeared at only one World Cup, all the way back in 2002, and are currently 94th in Fifa's world rankings. However, the country has dominated esports in recent years, winning four out of five gold medals at the Asian Games, with a talent pool of about 490 million users to choose from. China's top football body to form esports team after World Cup flop
China's top football body said on Tuesday it planned to form a national esports team, a surprise foray into virtual gaming after a dismal performance saw the country fail to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The new national esports football team will compete in 'events organised by FIFA, the Asian Football Confederation and other organisations', the Chinese Football Association (CFA) said. The CFA last month sacked national coach Branko Ivankovic after a 1-0 defeat to Indonesia, a result that effectively dashed China's hopes of qualifying for the World Cup. But while China languish at 94th in FIFA's world rankings, two places below tiny Luxembourg to the dismay of their vast fanbase, the country's esports sector is booming. In 2024, the industry boasted approximately 490 million users, generated US$38.5 billion in annual revenue and hosted 124 esports competitions. At the 2023 Asian Games, China's esports team secured four out of five gold medals. The CFA's foray into esports sparked mixed reactions among Chinese football fans. 'I think this might actually work,' one Weibo user said. 'We have quite a considerable esports player base in our country, and the talent selection is relatively fair,' he said. Others were less optimistic. 'They have messed up football in real life and now they want to mess up football in esports,' wrote another.

Al-Hilal first team to skip Saudi Super Cup in HK
Al-Hilal first team to skip Saudi Super Cup in HK Al-Hilal are the defending champions of the Saudi Super Cup. File photo: Reuters Al-Hilal have announced they won't be sending their first team to play in next month's Saudi Super Cup in Hong Kong. The Riyadh-based club cited contractual obligations on annual leave and the need to ensure the health of players. In a statement on Monday, Al-Hilal said the team had written to the Saudi Arabian Football Federation to explain the decision. The defending champions of the Saudi Super Cup noted that taking part in the August tournament would amount to contract violations with players not getting the minimum 28 days of annual leave. The Blues recently played in the Fifa Club World Cup in the United States and reached the quarter-finals where they lost to Fluminense. "After that match, the team had to remain in Orlando for three additional days due to flight constraints, which reduced the players' annual leave to only 24 days in the event of withdrawal, and to 21 days if the club participated in the Super Cup," the statement read. Al-Hilal also pointed out the decision came after "a review of the physical and muscular condition of several players, which showed signs of extreme fatigue after a demanding season that lasted a full year and one week". "Therefore, the decision to not participate serves not only the club's interest but also that of the Saudi national team, which is preparing for a training camp in October ahead of the World Cup qualification playoffs – with many Al-Hilal players expected to participate," the club added. Responding to RTHK's enquiries, the organiser of the Saudi Super Cup said it had taken note of the relevant reports and that the selection of the teams taking part was solely determined by the Saudi Arabian Football Federation. "If any qualified team is unable to attend and another team takes its place, ticket holders may choose between a full refund or attending the matches with the replacement team with their existing tickets," the organiser said. "If any qualified team is unable to attend and no replacement team is arranged, a full refund will be provided to all ticket holders of that specific semifinal match." The Saudi Super Cup will take place from August 19 to 23 at the Hong Kong Stadium, the first time the tournament is staged in East Asia. Meanwhile, English Premier League champions Liverpool have arrived in Hong Kong ahead of their match against AC Milan at Kai Tak Stadium on Saturday, as part of the Hong Kong Football Festival 2025. Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur will battle in the first-ever north London derby outside the UK on July 31.
