Court Sentences Man to Life Imprisonment for Attempting to Murder Child in 2017

The court of Additional Sessions Judge Amit Sahrawat, on June 4, noted that the man inflicted several stone blows on the head of the child and also gave multiple blade cuts on different body parts from head to toe, leaving him at the spot in a bloodbath to die.
"Inflicting numerous blade marks all over a seven-year-old child's body, trying to batter his head with a stone, and leaving the minor to die in a pool of blood showed the man's 'barbaric mentality,'" the court said.
The ASJ was hearing the arguments on the quantum of sentence against Mohammed Moi alias Mohit, who was sentenced under IPC sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 364 (kidnapping to commit murder).
Expressing anguish, the court wondered how the convict, a father of three children, attempted to murder the child in such a brutal manner.
The act of giving multiple blade marks on the face, shoulder, hand, legs, etc., of the minor child shows the barbaric mentality of the convict, and it also shows the heinousness of the offence, the judge noted.
Noting that aggravating factors against the man in the present case are the age of the victim child and the manner of committing the crime, the judge said that at the time of the incident in 2017, the victim child was aged about five to seven years. The convict gave several stone blows to the head of such a minor child and also gave several blade cuts to the body of the child, thereafter leaving the child in a bloodbath at the spot.

Meerut (UP), Aug 15 (PTI) The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Uttar Pradesh Police has arrested two men who were absconding for nearly 14 years in a multi-crore scholarship scam targeting funds meant for minority students, officials said on Friday. The accused — Dharmpal Singh alias Brahmpal, a resident of Gabhana village in Meerut district, and Mohsina Khan from Lohia Nagar in Meerut — were arrested on Thursday. The duo was wanted since 2010–11 in connection with the embezzlement of around Rs 4 crore in pre-matric scholarship funds. According to police, Dharmpal and Mohsina, along with others, siphoned off government grants meant for distribution to minority students by schools and madrasas. Investigators alleged that they diverted the funds through fraudulent means while holding positions as school managers or principals. The scam came to light after an inquiry by the district minority welfare officer in Meerut and other districts revealed large-scale misappropriation of scholarship money, police said. Cases were registered under multiple sections of the IPC, including for cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy, as well as provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, police said. The duo was evading arrest for more than 14 years before the EOW tracked and arrested them, they said. HC commutes life term of ex-operative to 10 years RI
Kochi: Kerala high court commuted the life sentence imposed on Subahani Haja alias Haja Moidheen of Thodupuzha, an accused in an Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) case for allegedly joining the proscribed terrorist organisation ISIS and fighting for them in Mosul, Iraq, in 2015, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. A bench comprising Justices V Raja Vijayaraghavan and K V Jayakumar on Thursday, while considering Haja's appeal challenging his conviction and sentence, upheld the rest of the findings and sentences imposed on him by a special court under various sections of UAPA and IPC. According to the prosecution, Haja travelled to Istanbul in Turkey on a tourist visa in April 2015, crossed the border into Iraq and underwent physical and arms training in Mosul. He was deployed on the war front but sustained an injury during training and was hospitalised. Following repeated requests, he was allowed to return to India in Sept 2015, after which he worked as a salesman-cum-accountant at Kadayanallur, Tamil Nadu, for about a year. In 2016, NIA arrested him upon receiving information about his association with ISIS. On appeal, the division bench noted that the offences committed by Haja were grave and serious. However, it also considered the absence of prior criminal antecedents, his expression of repentance and the possibility of reformation. The court observed that after his return from Iraq, no specific overt acts were alleged against him except for an unsuccessful attempt to procure explosives. Further, it found that the special court had not stated any reason for awarding the maximum sentence under Section 20 of UAPA. Stepfather convicted of sex assaults after 10-year-old's bold testimony in Thane
Thane: A 10-year-old girl's courageous testimony against her stepfather led to his conviction for sexual assaults and exploitation, with a Thane court sentencing him to ten years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) on Monday. Additional Sessions Judge DS Deshmukh convicted the 35-year-old stepfather under the Pocso Act after the victim consistently described how he sexually assaulted the girl multiple times in their home at a chawl in Thane. The incident came to light in April 2019 when neighbours noticed the child had gone missing for two days along with her elder brother. When she returned on April 11, 2019, concerned neighbours questioned her about her whereabouts, leading to the shocking revelation. The girl told the court that her stepfather sexually assaulted her. She also revealed that he committed similar heinous acts earlier when her mother was ill, showing a pattern of abuse that was ongoing. The judge said that such a stringent punishment would send a clear message to society about the consequences of child sexual abuse.
