
Lewis Hamilton laments ‘unacceptable' mistake as Lando Norris takes pole at Belgian GP
Norris, who trails Piastri by nine points in the world championship, was a step behind the Australian in sprint qualifying on Friday but turned his fortunes around, setting a time which edged out his teammate by 0.085 seconds.
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc came home a surprise third in qualifying ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who won the sprint race earlier on Saturday.
But as for Leclerc's teammate Hamilton, a day on from qualifying third-last for the sprint race, it was another disastrous session for the Ferrari driver.
The seven-time world champion arrived here at Spa upbeat, with a new rear suspension upgrade on the under-par SF-25 car, as he looked to claim his first podium of the season.
But after a spin at the final chicane put him P18 and rendered his sprint race irrelevant – though the spin was put down to a mechanical error – Hamilton himself this time made a costly error at the top of the famous Eau Rouge corner.
The Briton looked to have saved himself with a time quick enough for the top-15, before communication came from the FIA stewards that Hamilton had exceeded track limits at the top of Eau Rouge corner, marginally placing all four wheels outside the white lines.
As a result, his lap was deleted and, staggeringly, the 40-year-old was knocked out in Q1 again. He will start Sunday's grand prix in 16th place.
'Not great, from my side I made a mistake,' a despondent Hamilton said in the media pen afterwards.
'We have to look internally. I have to apologise to my team, it's unacceptable to be out in both Q1s, a very poor performance from myself.
'I don't think there's much we can do. Everyone is trying to do the best we can, we've had upgrades, but I think that's it for the rest of the year.'
Just after the halfway mark of the season, and trailing championship leader Piastri by a mammoth 138 points, Hamilton then effectively wrote off the rest of the campaign as the majority of teams shift their focus to new engine and chassis regulations next year.

'I think the focus back at the factory is to focus on next year's car,' he said. 'This season has been a tricky one.'
A wet race on Sunday – with rain probability currently standing at 60% - is Hamilton's only saving grace. The seven-time world champion finished fourth in the wet-dry drama of Silverstone three weeks ago and won an entertaining race last year at Spa.
However, despite all the clamour and hype surrounding his move to Ferrari, it seems the Scuderia's final set of upgrades this season have not provided the silver bullet many hoped would propel Hamilton back into contention at the top.
Instead, it continues to be the team Hamilton made his F1 debut for, McLaren, who set the pace out in front. Norris, who is half Belgian, is on a run of two consecutive victories and impressively kept his cool in the heat of battle on Saturday afternoon.
While Norris, second time around, did not go faster than his first lap in Q3, Piastri could not claw back the deficit enough and, to the delight of Norris's Belgian mother Cisca in the garage, could only manage second place.
The Australian would later reveal an error into turn 14, in his view, cost him pole.
'It was a decent lap,' Norris said, before a pointed statement to the doubters. 'Everyone was pretty worried after yesterday, but I was confident going into today.
'It was nothing to worry about, people like to make a lot of things up. The car is flying a lot.'
Piastri, however, will be looking to follow Verstappen's blueprint from earlier on Saturday to steal a march on his teammate at the start tomorrow. The short run down to turn one at Spa favours second place – on the inside line – and the lengthy run up the hill to the Kemmel Straight also provides another opening for cars behind with a healthy slipstream.
That being said, wet conditions would likely shake up the status quo. Hamilton will need some favours from above if he is to salvage anything from what, he admitted himself, has been a 'weekend to forget' thus far.

A day after Hamilton described himself as 'absolutely useless', and called on his own Ferrari team to replace him, the seven-time world champion started 12th and finished in the same position at the Hungaroring, a lap behind winner Lando Norris. Charles Leclerc was fourth in the other Ferrari. Fronting up to TV cameras after the conclusion of the 14th race of his Ferrari career which has so far failed to live up to its pre-season hype, Hamilton was asked to reflect on his post-qualifying comments. 'When you have a feeling, you have a feeling,' he told Sky Sports. 'There is a lot going on in the background that is not great.' Asked if he had fallen out of love with racing, Hamilton replied: 'No, I still love the team.' Hamilton then headed for his session with the print media. Quizzed on how he felt a day on from being eliminated in Q2 – a performance made all the more harrowing after Leclerc took pole position, he replied: 'Same.' Put to him that his remarks suggesting that Ferrari 'need a new driver' would worry his fans, the British driver again replied: 'Same.' Asked if he had anything else to say other than 'the same', Hamilton said: 'I have got nothing else to say.' The sport now breaks for three weeks for its mid-season shutdown. The next race takes place in the Netherlands on August 31. 'Very much so,' said Hamilton, who was then asked if he was looking forward to the summer break. However, he is 42 points behind Leclerc, has been out-qualified by his team-mate at 10 of the 14 rounds, beaten him in only two races, at Imola and Silverstone, and is still awaiting his first podium in Ferrari colours. But Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, who oversaw six of Hamilton's record-equalling seven titles, said: 'Lewis is wearing his heart on his sleeve. 'It was very raw what he said. He was hard on himself. We have seen it before when he felt he had not met his own expectations. He's been that emotionally transparent since he was a young adult. 'But he is the GOAT. He will always be the GOAT. And nobody is going to take it away for any single weekends or a race season that hasn't gone to plan. That is something he always needs to remember – that he is the greatest of all time.' Hamilton's Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur added: 'I don't need to motivate him (Hamilton). He is frustrated but not demotivated, that is a different story. I can perfectly understand the situation.'

McLaren took their 200th Formula 1 victory as Lando Norris saw off Oscar Piastri to narrow the gap in the championship to just nine points after 14 rounds of the 2025 season Lando Norris is relishing a blockbuster Formula 1 title fight after seeing off rival Oscar Piastri to win the Hungarian Grand Prix. The Brit, 25, heads into the summer break just nine points behind his McLaren team-mate after his third win in four and fifth of the season overall. He won by less than a second after holding off Aussie Piastri's late charge in Budapest yesterday and declared: "My confidence is high. I feel good and I'm getting a good amount out of the car. Could it be better? Yeah, I still feel like there are things I need to work on. My lap one was not good today, but my starts have been okay. "I am not making my life easy and I have got to make it easier for myself. But a win is great and I gained some points today. I think both of us accept that [the other] is going to win every now and then and it is going to be like that for the rest of the year." Norris started third but dropped to fifth on the opening lap and decided to change tactics. It worked beautifully, pitting just once and managing those tyres "perfectly" to make sure he had enough to deny Piastri, 24. He admitted: "I didn't really expect it to work because I was a long way behind by the time we committed to the one-stop. But the end of my first stint was great, the pace was very strong, and I just managed my tyres perfectly in the second stint. My strength of tyre management helped me a lot." Piastri said he thought it was "a good day" but his stony-faced expression on the podium told a different story. This was an opportunity missed and the resulting 14-point swing could be crucial come December. He said: "Going into the race, we thought the two-stop was the best thing to do and in clean air it probably still was. It's easy now to say a one-stop was the way to go, but one second different and the answer would be very different. Overall, I thought it was a good day." Looking at the bigger picture of his close title fight with Norris, Piastri added: "The pace has mostly been good and I feel my execution of races has been good as well. It's going to be a tight battle all the way to the end. But I'm enjoying it." Charles Leclerc had started on pole and led the first half of the race. But he suffered an unspecified issue on his Ferrari, which the Monegasque claimed was to do with his chassis, which saw him tumble down disappointingly to fourth place. He said: "It was around lap 40, as soon as I started to struggle and complain is when I started to have the issue, and then it got worse and worse. It's frustrating to have everything under control, to know the pace is in the car to win, and then to be nowhere and we even lost the podium, so very disappointing."

Thomas Partey on verge of joining Villarreal despite rape charges
Thomas Partey, who is due in court this week to face rape charges, is close to signing for Villarreal. The Spanish club hope to announce a deal, believed to be for one year with the option of a further 12 months, in the next few days. Villarreal will face Partey 's former club Arsenal in a friendly at the Emirates this week. Partey has already passed a medical at the La Liga side with terms being agreed. The 32-year-old is due in court on Tuesday, the day before Arsenal host Villarreal, after being charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. Partey was charged on July 4, four days after his contract with Arsenal expired, although the alleged offences took place while he was playing for them. The Ghana international had been the subject of an investigation that started in February 2022 after police first received a report of rape. He will make an initial appearance at Westminster Magistrates Court and denies the charges against him, which relate to three women who reported incidents between 2021 and 2022. Arsenal were in talks to extend the midfielder's career at the club, having joined in 2020 from Atletico Madrid for €50m (£45.4m). Partey went on to make 167 appearances for Arsenal with manager Mikel Arteta suggesting they offered him a new contract because he is a 'really important player for us'. However, no agreement could be reached and Partey left as a free agent, allowing him to join another club without a fee being paid. During Arsenal's recent tour to the Far East and following Partey being charged, Arteta said he was '100 per cent' comfortable with the way that the club handled the case. On the day the charges were announced, they released a statement which noted Partey's contract with them had ended and that, because of 'ongoing legal proceedings', they were 'unable to comment on the case'. Speaking publicly about the matter for the first time, Arteta said on Monday: 'I think the club was very clear in its statement. There are a lot of legal matters that are very complicated so I cannot comment on any of that.' It was then put to him: 'A lot of fans have questions over the way in which the matter was handled by the club. Do you feel confident and comfortable that the club followed all the right processes in that?' Arteta answered: '100 per cent, yes.' Villarreal, who played Leeds United last Saturday as they prepare for the new season with a tour of England, have qualified for the Champions League which has clearly been a factor in Partey agreeing to join them who also wanted to return to Spanish football.
