Donegal ratings: Slow start costs Donegal in decider

It wasn't to be for Donegal in Croke Park. Here is how we rated their performances. Shaun Patton - 6 Under pressure with Kerry's aggressive press throughout. Took 29 kick-outs and got 18 of them away to white jerseys. Never quite managed to get away any of those over-the-top, defence splitting sidewinders that he has in his locker. Truth be told, he'll probably be disappointed with his tame attempt to save the Joe O'Connor shot for Kerry's goal. Finbarr Roarty - 6 The young defender has had a great season overall but his semi-final heroics against Meath were the high point. Fouled Paudie Clifford for a free that led to an important Kerry point in the 27th minute, sapping Donegal momentum after four points in a row. It was that kind of day but he'll be back for sure. Peadar Mogan - 5 Marked Paudie Clifford for the most part. It was a long day and Mogan ended up fouling the Fossa phenom for a two-point free attempt that Sean O'Shea converted in the 59th minute, one of the final nails in Donegal's coffin. Never managed to get Kerry on the back foot with his trademark runs from deep. Brendan McCole - 5.5 Marking David Clifford was always going to amount to the short straw. There were bright spots, like turning over Clifford in the 24th minute, which inspired back-to-back Michael Murphy points. But McCole would still have hoped for better overall. Conceding nine points from play, albeit 0-6 of that came from three two-pointers and Clifford was restricted overall to seven shots, amounted to a bad day. Ryan McHugh - 6 The Kilcar man was desperate to win an All-Ireland SFC medal, like his brother, Mark, and father, Martin. But after a first-half trying to stop the Kerry onslaught, he didn't last much longer. Took a huge hit after the second-half throw-in and had to go off. Eoghan Bán Gallagher - 6 Started in the half-back line and struggled, like the rest of the Donegal defence, to exert any authority. Moved onto Dylan Geaney for the second-half after Caolan McColgan's exit. Didn't see enough of the ball for his quality. Caolan McColgan - 5 The one player brought in at the 11th hour on either team, replacing Hugh McFadden at midfield. Donegal obviously had a plan in mind but it didn't come off as McColgan failed to get on top in the middle third. Taken off at half-time to allow McFadden on. Caolan McGonagle - 6 Wore number seven but dropped back to the full-back line to pick up Dylan Geaney. You'd have fancied him for that one, given the respective form of both players, but Geaney had a strong final, pinching three points and carrying the ball effectively. Michael Langan - 6.5 Donegal needed more from their big midfielder. He has been a totem for them throughout the campaign but bar a few decent plays, like when he fetched a Kerry kick-out before a Conor O'Donnell score in the 46th minute, he was a peripheral enough figure. Kicked one of Donegal's five wides too. Shane O'Donnell - 7 The quarter-final Man of the Match kicked two points and did his best throughout to open up gaps in the Kerry rearguard. They rarely materialised though as Donegal struck to a frustrating script of avoiding two-pointers in search of gaps in the Kerry defence. Ciarán Thompson - 6 Won a free that Michael Murphy converted but suffered an injury to his left ankle in the 21st minute that required attention. He was taken off soon after. His departure robbed Donegal of a serious two-point threat, as well as an ultra industrious performer. Ciarán Moore - 5 Powerful runs from deep are Moore's trademark but he was unable to conjure much magic. In fact, he will look back with more than a little frustration at the amount of damage Gavin White did for Kerry down that side of the field. Conor O'Donnell - 8 Donegal's best performer on the day. O'Donnell struck four points from play, escaping Dylan Casey on several occasions, and was at the hub of their strong third quarter when Donegal got the gap down to just four points. He was an All-Star contender before the game, with 3-20 registered, and that hasn't changed, despite the loss. Michael Murphy - 7.5 The former captain was the last player to speak to the players in the pre-match huddle, underlining his alpha status within the group. He scored eight points, six from frees, and had a terrific duel with Jason Foley. There were some lowlights, like wasting a decent free opportunity in the 21st minute and coughing up possession to Joe O'Connor with a loose pass 12 minutes later, but he contributed well overall, winning two of the frees that he converted. Oisín Gallen - 7 Three points in the first 22 minutes amounted to a great start, even if Donegal were under the cosh at that stage. The scores dried up on the corner-forward after that as Paul Murphy got on top and the supply dried up. Gallen did win a free that was converted in the third quarter but he was eventually taken off in the 50th minute. Substitutes Dáire Ó Baoill - 6 A busy performer for Donegal after coming on but nothing much came off for him. Hugh McFadden - 6 Named to start earlier in the week before being replaced by Caolan McGonagle before throw-in. Came on at half-time and got stuck in, particularly under opposition kick-outs, but to little effect. Paddy McBrearty - 5 Couldn't add to his 1-23 tally for the Championship. Wasted possession in the 56th minute and booted a wide. The captain would have wanted much more. Jason McGee - 7 One of the few to enhance his reputation after coming on. Played key roles in points for Shane O'Donnell and Michael Murphy as Donegal chased the game in the final quarter. Jamie Brennan - 5 Dropped a point attempt short when scores were badly needed. Won't be too happy with how Joe O'Connor got past him for Kerry's goal either.
