NCAA super regionals set after frenzy of upsets

Reuters03-06-2025
June 3 - The SEC remains a dominant presence ahead of this week's NCAA super regionals despite the conference losing the top two teams in the country in shocking upsets last weekend.
With No. 1 Vanderbilt and No. 2 Texas bounced in the regionals they hosted, No. 3 Arkansas, No. 4 Auburn and No. 6 LSU are now among the favorites as the road to Omaha continues with the eight super regionals beginning Friday. Arkansas will face defending national champion and No. 14 seed Tennessee.
Vandy and Texas were certainly not alone in the frenzy of regional upsets. No. 7 Georgia and No. 10 Ole Miss were also sent packing. Murray St. eliminated Ole Miss to win the first regional in program history and become only the 10th No. 4 seed in Division I baseball history to advance to the super regionals.
Following the upsets, only three of the eight super regional sites will pit ranked teams against each other, while two will feature unranked teams vying for a spot in the College World Series.
Meanwhile, the ACC emerged from the regionals with five teams. That includes No. 5 North Carolina, which finished the regular season ranked No. 1, and former powerhouse Miami, which returns to the super regionals for the first time since 2016.
Miami vs. Louisville
No. 8 Oregon State vs. No. 9 Florida State
No. 5 North Carolina vs. Arizona
No. 4 Auburn vs. No. 13 Coastal Carolina
No. 15 UCLA vs. UTSA
Duke vs. Murray State
No. 6 LSU vs. West Virginia
No. 3 Arkansas vs. No. 14 Tennessee
The three-game super regionals will run June 6-9 across the sites to determine the eight that will advance to the CWS, which begins June 13. The ESPN family of networks will broadcast the games across ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU, as well as on Fubo.

Orlando Pride sign Ovalle for £1.1m record fee

Orlando Pride have made Lizbeth Ovalle the most expensive signing in women's football history by signing the Mexico winger from Tigres UANL in a deal worth $1.5m (£1.1m). "I'm coming with the clear objective of winning titles and leaving a mark with the club," Ovalle said. "I'm ready to give it my all and help the Pride continue to be a leading team." Pride owner and chairman Mark Wilf said Ovalle "is a world-class talent and a proven winner, and her arrival in Orlando marks another step on our journey to position the Pride among the elite clubs in global women's soccer". Ovalle began her career at Tigres in 2017 and has helped them win six league titles and leaves the Mexican club as their all-time leading scorer. She scored 136 goals and provided 103 assists in 294 appearances for the club during the eight-year has also won 81 international caps for Mexico, scoring 20 goals and was included in the team of the tournament at the 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup held in the United paying £900,000 to sign USA defender Naomi Girma from San Diego Wave in January is now third on the list of most expensive women's transfers.

Bucs to activate WR Chris Godwin, LT Tristan Wirfs off PUP list

August 21 - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers plan to activate wide receiver Chris Godwin and left tackle Tristan Wirfs off the active/physically unable to perform list and place both on the 53-man roster to start the season, coach Todd Bowles said Thursday. While that's positive news for both players, Bowles was quick to temper the excitement. "(Godwin's) got to get in football shape and everything else, so I wouldn't expect him to play early on," Bowles said. .".. He's been out a long time, he's got to get in football shape. Tristan, the same way. But they'll be off and we'll see how it goes going forward." Godwin, 29, is coming back from a fractured ankle sustained in Tampa Bay's Week 7 loss to the Baltimore Ravens last season. He wrapped up 2024 with 50 receptions for 576 yards and five touchdowns and signed a three-year, $66 million contract to return to Tampa Bay this offseason. Across 111 career games with the Bucs, Godwin has racked up 579 catches for 7,266 yards and 39 TDs, along with two rushing scores. He made the Pro Bowl in 2019. Wirfs, 26, also is expected to miss the start of the season after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery last month. A four-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time first-team All-Pro, Wirfs started 16 games in 2024 and has started all 79 of his games since Tampa Bay drafted him 13th overall in 2020. Wirfs signed a five-year, $140.6 million extension last August. --Field Level Media

Prince's estate is being sued by his Purple Rain co-star Apollonia

Prince's protege Apollonia Kotero has filed a lawsuit against the estate of the late musical icon, claiming they tried 'to steal' the rights to her name. The legal filing from the Santa Monica, California native, 66, came in response to an application from Paisley Park Enterprises LLC endeavoring to trademark the name Apollonia. Apollonia, whose full name is Patricia Apollonia Kotero, said that the estate has also taken nefarious measures to 'cancel' trademark applications she had previously submit in the legal docs reviewed by Daily Mail. The seven-time Grammy winner, whose timeless hits include Kiss, 1999 and Let's Go Crazy, died at the age of 57 on April 21, 2016 from an accidental fentanyl overdose at his home in Chanhassen, Minnesota . Prince's estate has sought to 'acquire all things related to Prince even though it has no legal right to do so,' Apollonia's legal team said. Apollonia initially met Prince while auditioning for a role in his 1984 film Purple Rain , which she later co-starred in with him. Daily Mail has reached out to reps for both parties for further comment on the story. Apollonia's lawyer Daniel Cislo told the court that the late artist 'consented to and encouraged' her to use the name moving forward 'in her professional endeavors.' 'Prince and Apollonia were friends, and he wanted her to be successful as Apollonia,' said Cislo. Apollonia's lawyer said in the court filing that 'if ever the fundamental principles of fairness - waiver, acquiescence, and laches apply, they apply here.' Cislo said in the filing that 'all of the goodwill associated with the name and trademark "Apollonia" for the past four decades is attributable to' Apollonia, who posts to YouTube under her Apollonia Studio 6 banner. Apollonia's lawyer told the court that 'there is only one Apollonia, and Apollonia is the source of the goods and services provided under this name. 'Therefore, to protect her brand, Ms. Kotero owns several "Apollonia" trademark applications and registrations.' Apollonia said that the estate had been involved in 'an aggressive campaign before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and Trademark Trial and Appeal Board in seeking to derail her efforts to register for trademarks. Apollonia said that the estate of the late Minnesota icon was not the 'rightful owner' of her trademark - and that an early ruling was essential to stop the estate from running wild with spurious legal claims moving forward. Prince's estate in June tried to gain ownership of the Apollonia name, as they approached the United States Patent and Trademark Office with an 'intent-to-use' application, according to Apollonia's legal team. Apollonia said she had sought to apply for trademarks for 'use in connection with entertainment services' and is asking the court to force Paisley Park Enterprises to pull back their applications. Apollonia's legal team described the problems with the Prince estate as a 'real, immediate, and justiciable controversy.'
