Tony Awards bombshells - Nicole Scherzinger's tears to George Clooney slammed

Daily Mirror5 hours ago

The Tony Awards took place last night at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, with a shock win for former Pussycat Dolls star Nicole Scherzinger and a dig at a Hollywood legend
The Tony Awards aired yesterday evening, with Cynthia Erivo on hosting duties. The Wicked star fronted the iconic award ceremony, which was attended by a number of stars including Hollywood legend George Clooney.
The ceremony - which aired live from Radio City Music Hall in New York City - saw a number of stars receive huge accolades including Nicole Scherzinger, who won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.

Here, The Mirror takes a look at some of the biggest moments from the night - when one Hollywood star found himself being straddled, whilst another was the butt of the host's jokes.

Nicole's tears
Nicole Scherzinger was emotional, explaining how she felt like she "didn't belong" when she was growing up as picked up the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.
She received the accolade for playing Norma Desmond in Andrew Lloyd Webber's classic musical Sunset Boulevard on Broadway and in an emotional speech, she urged others to never "give up" on their dreams.
She said: "Growing up, I always felt like I didn't belong, but you all have made me feel like I belong and I have come home at last. So if there is anyone who feels like they don't belong or your time hasn't come, don't give up. Just keep on giving and giving because the world needs your love and light more than ever. This is a testament that love always wins."
The Pussycat Dolls star fought off competition from Death Becomes Her stars Megan Hilty and Jennifer Simard, Audra McDonald for her role in Gypsy and Boop actress Jasmine Amy Rogers to take home the accolade.
Keanu straddled
Hollywood star Keanu Reeves was left stunned when he was straddled by Jonathan Groff. The actor appeared on stage with a medley from Just in Time, as he made his way into the crowd.

Whist in the crowd, Jonathan stood up on the armrests and crouched lower and lower, with Keanu easing into the routine. Fans rushed to social media after the moment and shared their feelings on it.
"I've never been so jealous of two people at once," one wrote, as another added: "Keanu Reeves; a one-of-a-kind Hollywood legend." A third penned: "You could only do that with Keanu. The man is very gracious and will play along."

Cynthia slams Hollywood legend
Cynthia made a cheeky dig at the expense of Hollywood star George Clooney as she hosted the Tony Awards.
In her opening speech, she was quick to praise a number of stars. She told the audience: "What a season, what a line-up of shows being honoured tonight: dramas, comedies, stunning musicals, originals and reimaginations of the highest order.
"Featuring first-time nominees like Cole Escola, Sadie Sink, Louis McCartney — and an up-and-comer that I think you're going to be hearing a lot about: George Clooney. Good for you, George. Things are going your way, I like it a lot for you."
The camera then panned to George who was sat alongside his wife Amal Clooney, who laughed at the joke. George shrugged his shoulders at the comment before then playing along and mouthing: "It's alright."

Highlights of the Tony Awards: Radio City becomes the room where it happens for a 'Hamilton' reunion

Even the ushers at Radio City Music Hall seemed thrilled to be in the room where it happened. A few of them could be seen grooving, like everyone else at Sunday's Tony Awards, to the 'Hamilton' reunion performance — a medley of some of that blockbuster musical's biggest songs, performed by the original cast. The occasion was the 10th anniversary of Lin-Manuel Miranda's juggernaut that spawned multiple touring companies, a West End production and a live-capture film — and is still going strong. But while the theater was buzzing to songs like 'My Shot,' 'The Schuyler Sisters,' 'History Has Its Eyes on You,' and 'The Room Where It Happens,' some people were unfortunately NOT in the room where, er, it was happening. They were the ones who'd taken a trip to the bar or stroll around the lobby, and were then held from entering until the next commercial break — missing perhaps the night's most anticipated highlight. They'd also have missed the entire audience singing along with Jonathan Groff, aka King George, 'Da-da-da, dat-da, dat, da-da-da, da-ya-da, Da-da, dat, dat, da-ya-da.' Note for next year: Exit at your peril! Cole Escola plans a call to Mom, thanks a Grindr date Most award winners thank Mom, their agents, their co-stars, their spouses. Cole Escola, one of the major stars of this Tony night, promised Mom a call, but also decided to thank 'Teebo from Grindr' — the dating app — when accepting the award for lead actor in a play. Escola is star and writer of the riotous 'Oh, Mary!' — a reimagining of the life of Mary Todd Lincoln (and her beleaguered husband, Abe) that addresses the question: What if the Lincoln assassination wasn't such a bad thing for Mary? (Mary wants to be a cabaret star, you see.) The show is seeing audiences collapse in laughter for 80 minutes every night on Broadway. To nobody's surprise, Escola, a downtown cabaret star, beat out high-wattage competitors like George Clooney and Daniel Dae Kim for the acting award. They mentioned their co-nominees in their speech, saying they had enjoyed sharing 'warm salads' at pre-awards lunches. Escola is the first nonbinary actor to win a Tony in the category. And this guy's still single When 'Maybe Happy Ending' writers Hue Park and Will Aronson accepted the award for best book of a musical, Park felt it necessary to point out that they weren't an actual couple. 'I am very much single,' he clarified, for anyone wondering. Then later, when the duo won for best score, Park deemed a reminder necessary: 'By the way, I'm still single.' And then 'Maybe Happy Ending,' the charming and quirky romance between decommissioned robots in a futuristic Korea, won the big prize: best musical. Park did not get the mic. But producer Jeffrey Richards did, and he reminded the crowd: 'Hue is still single.' Broadway as home, sweet home Cynthia Erivo, the 'Wicked' star and powerhouse vocalist hosting the evening, said it first: 'As they apparently say in a very fertile piece of intellectual property, 'she said with a wink, 'there's no place like home. And Broadway has always been mine.' It's a familiar theme on Tony night: the theater community as a welcoming haven for those who may feel different or unseen. It was echoed by Harvey Fierstein, winner of a lifetime achievement award, describing how he joined the theater after being welcomed by a company in Brooklyn. And it was expressed very emotionally by Nicole Scherzinger, winning best actress in a musical for 'Sunset Blvd.' 'Growing up, I always felt like I didn't belong,' said Scherzinger, former lead singer of the pop group Pussycat Dolls who plays Norma Desmond in the minimalist version of the Andrew Lloyd Webber show. 'But you all have made me feel like I belong, and I have come home at last.' Those last words echo the lyrics of one of Desmond's big numbers, 'As If We Never Said Goodbye.' 'So if there's anyone out there who feels like they don't belong, or your time hasn't come, don't give up,' Scherzinger continued. 'Just keep on giving and giving because the world needs your love and your light now more than ever.' You really COULD have heard a pin drop There's always lots of chatter going on during an awards show. But the way the crowd quieted down during Audra McDonald's powerful, agonized performance of 'Rose's Turn' from 'Gypsy' was striking. In the song's quiet moments, you heard utter silence in the vast room. McDonald, Tony's most awarded actor, is clearly revered by the theater community, who cheered her with standing ovations. But the award she was up for went to Scherzinger. 'Succession,' succeeding again It's been two years since HBO's 'Succession' ended, but its stars keep turning up at awards shows — and often winning. Jeremy Strong won a Tony last year and was nominated for an Oscar this year. Kieran Culkin won an Oscar this year and is appearing on Broadway this season, though he wasn't nominated. And now it was the turn of Sarah Snook — Emmy and Golden Globe winner — to win a Tony. Snook, who played mercurial sibling Shiv Roy in the series, took the Tony for best actress in a play for 'The Picture of Dorian Gray,' in which she plays all 26 roles. Remembering a friend Former Tony winner and musical theater regular Gavin Creel, who died last year of cancer, was a friend to many in the theater community, and was remembered more than once on Tony evening. During the early pre-show, actor Celia Keenan-Bolger was honored with the Isabelle Stevenson award, for her advocacy work in the arts. She spoke movingly of her deep friendship with Creel and their advocacy work together. Later, singer/actor Sara Bareilles performed a soulful duet of 'Tomorrow' from 'Annie,' harmonizing with Erivo, during the memorial segment. That segment ended with a photo of Creel, also a dear friend to Bareilles, and the singer teared up. Both Bareilles and Keenan-Bolger are involved with the Gavin Creel Fellowship, an initiative that plans to provide $25,000 grants to five emerging theater actors each year. And she is telling you she's not going The final award had been announced by presenter Miranda — best musical to 'Maybe Happy Ending' — and the audience started to disperse. But Erivo had another idea. Riffing on the concept of leaving, she launched into the famous 'Dreamgirls' ballad 'And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going' — with rewritten lyrics. It was a yet another powerhouse performance from someone who has one of the best voices on the planet. The audience stopped dispersing — and started cheering.

Sam Thompson admits he was 'sweating' over awkward Louis Tomlinson question

Sam Thompson has revealed the awkward questioning about Louis Tomlinson that left him 'sweating'. On the Staying Relevant podcast with Pete Wicks, Sam chatted about his recently completed mammoth Soccer Aid challenge that saw him take on a 260-mile endurance challenge and is set to play in a celebrity football match. While chatting about the upcoming event, Sam spoke about the fact that he will be playing with Louis Tomlinson, who is currently dating his recent ex-partner, Zara McDermott. Sam said he was previously questioned about Louis in a pre-match interview, and was 'panicking' while responding. Sam told Pete of the incident: 'At the end of the interview, he goes, 'Look mate, I've got to ask the question that everyone wants to know this is sort of the big question really, the elephant in the room, What's it going to be like with you and Louis? Obviously he's doing Soccer Aid too.' 'Mate, you should have seen the room, everybody, it was a silent then everyone goes 'Woah, Woah Woah, end the call! End the call!' and I have just gone 'No, no guys, I've got this, I've got this.' I held my hands up to say just relax.' He revealed that despite encouraging his team that he was ready to handle the question from the journalist, he actually had no idea what he was going to say in response. 'They look at me and they're all panicking and I just think and all of the PR are like 'f**king hell if he says anything wrong here. And then in my head panicked and went 'I don't have this. I don't even know what I'm going to say.' Thankfully, he spoke from the heart and emphasised the most important part about the charity. 'I think I did alright and I meant everything I said as well, that it's not about me or Louis or who anyone is dating, it's f**king Unicef and charity and everyone is going to be there for the exact same reason. And if he has anything about him which I've heard he does, he's going to sit there and say the exact same thing.' Pete applauded him for handling the potentially uncomfortable situation with grace and jokingly asked him if he burst into tears after the call. 'The panic I felt though afterwards, I said it and I went well that's what I think, I don't know if it's the right thing or not, and then I came off and I wasn't far off that [crying] and I didn't realise I was sweating so hard I had sweat patches under my arms. 'You know when you're sweating buckets? And I turned around to our PR and was like 'was that ok?'' When interviewed by the The Mirror and asked this question in May, Sam said: 'I've never met Louis, but the moment I see him, I'll be like, 'mate, how amazing is this what we're doing, and hopefully we can make as much money as possible. And I imagine – from what I hear is a really lovely bloke – I imagine the reply will be exactly the same.' More Trending 'It's a charity football game and everyone will have a smile on their face….everybody is doing it for a cause that is far beyond relationships and who's hooking up with who and all that kind of stuff. Football brings everyone together.' He also told MailOnline that charity was at the forefront of the event: 'I feel absolutely fine. It's going to be a beautiful, special day and we are both playing together for such a great cause, and all of us taking part in this are in it for the same reason. 'It's such an amazing day and such a special charity – there's going to be smiles all around, I can promise you that. 'The charity is the most important thing, our fun is secondary to that. And when you see the big donations on the screen, that is the coolest thing in the world, and that's the best thing about it. I can't wait.' Got a story? Nicole Scherzinger has big career plans afterbreaking down over Tony Awards Win

Nicole Scherzinger reveals career plans after Tony Awards Win Nicole Scherzinger says her Tony Award win is part of a "healing process" after years of feeling disrespected and disregarded by the entertainment industry. Former X Factor judge Nicole broke down in tears when accepting the best actress honour for her role on Sunset Boulevard praising her family and fiance Thom Evans for his continued support She had detailed her upset and frustration at being treated like a pop flop and 'put in a box' for over a decade after the Pussycat Dolls success. ‌ The American star now plans to build a movie career and continue stage shows, including creating her own, asserting: "I'd love to do it all." ‌ Nicole, 46, was told applying for stage and screen roles was a 'a waste of time' for over a decade and branded nothing more than a past it girl band star. The star feels vindicated to have financially banked and created her own solo show, performing show tunes, at small venues across London and the US. Nicole, who won an Olivier Award for her debut role portraying Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard, celebrated her victory with a pizza. Nicole admitted: "This has been a very healing process for me. I always felt like I wasn't living in my full potential and full purpose. I was never happy with myself. It is because I knew I had so much more to give. And this role and this opportunity allowed me to give all of me. It's changed my life. "But it has been hard. It has not been an easy road. I am so grateful that I am able to connect to people on a spiritual and soulful level and I could make a difference in these people's lives. "That is exactly what we do it for. So I am thankful." She added: "I am living in my dream. This is my childhood dream come true. I feel like I win every night when people tell me the impact of how my performances impact them. This has been 30 years in the making and I've been working and fighting for this my whole life. ‌ "I am completely out of my mind. I just want to go home and cry for a very long time. I won a Tony against an unbelievable category of (women) But I have come home (Broadway) and am back where I was born to be. I mean this - Love always wins.' On stage collecting the gong at the NYC Radio City Music Hall event, she praised her rugby star partner Thom Evans for his ongoing support. "For my fiance Thom who believes in me, when I forget to believe in myself." She added 'Andrew Lloyd Webber, it's happened. It's been such an honour to create with you." ‌ Her desire is to continue singing and making music, but in movie musicals or create her own stage show. Nicole, who wore a blood red custom dress to resemble the final scene of the Broadway hit, added: "I want to do it all. I would like to do movies and movie musicals. I would like to build my own show. There are roles I would like to create. "It's validating and it's fulfilling because I know that I'm on the right path. I know I'm back where I was born to be. ‌ 'When you see the show, you see the real depths of me as an actor and as a singer and your voice and the range as well. I want to encourage people to keep an open mind and an open heart. You never know where your unexpected dream opportunity is going to come from.' Nicole reflected on her tough mental battle to bounce back from constant rejection after being written off as a failed pop artist Nicole admitted: 'Like so many people, I was put in a box. it is hard when you feel like your whole career, you've been fighting to be seen and fighting to show what you're truly capable of. ‌ 'Ten years back after The Dolls, I really wanted to go back to doing musical theater stuff. It's like where my heart whisper is. And there was no path to do that. 'People weren't even allowing me to be seen for filmed musicals and some live stuff going on. ‌ 'They just wouldn't even consider seeing me, (they were saying) ' that's going to be a waste of our time. ' I was like, 'they're not taking me seriously. "So I got to educate them. 'So I put on a show exactly six years ago in 2019, I put my money up and did all the songs and the roles I always dreamed of playing that nobody would let me. I created my own show of an hour and 20 minutes. ‌ 'I brought it to New York, London, and la and I just put it out there in the universe.' Nicole is grateful that respected producer Jamie Lloyd took a chance on her talent as 'Nobody else would've have asked me. 'He came to me with the idea of playing Norma Desmond. She added to Sirius XM: 'Glenn was intense, because she originated the role. She wrote to me in a card 'to my soul mate'. "It is validating. It is words of affirmation when what you put out, what you're so passionate about and what you put out is being received with the intention that you put it out and received not from your peers, but even giants before you. It's affirming," ‌ The 46-year-old recently spoke of how Thom has been a rock to her during her two year run and they plan to wed after her show run. Asked directly "will you get married soon? " , Nicole relied: 'Yes, we will get married. We're engaged - to be married when I'm not working. "Thank God he is so patient. We'll get married back home in Hawaii, where my family is from."
