Lawyer denies claims of public donations for Zara Qairina's family's legal fees
Hamid Ismail said the family had not requested any contributions and that his services were provided pro bono.
'If there's anyone who is opening a fund or claiming it's to pay RM2 million in legal fees, that is false and untrue,' he was quoted as saying when met at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital's forensic department today.
He was responding to comments on TikTok allegedly calling for donations to support legal services for Zara Qairina's family.
Hamid also said the investigation process, which included the exhumation, was still ongoing and expected to take time.
'As expected, it will take a long time. We are not allowed to go inside,' he said, adding that Zara Qairina's mother was seen leaving the site briefly and appeared very emotional.
More than 3,000 people from all walks of life attended a solidarity rally today to demand justice for her.
The rally, held at the Labuan Food Court and coinciding with the Labuan Bike event, was organised by Kelab Wanita Sejahtera and led by Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Mohd Rafi Ali Hassan.
The event drew a rare display of unity as local political leaders, including from PKR and Warisan, took to the stage to deliver impassioned speeches calling for truth, justice, and an end to violence against children.
Zara Qairina, was confirmed dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on July 17. She had been rushed to the hospital after being found unconscious in a drain near the dormitory of a religious school in Papar at about 4 am on July 16.
In a significant development, her body was exhumed late last night and transported to Kota Kinabalu.
A post-mortem has been scheduled for today at Queen Elizabeth Hospital I to assist ongoing police investigations into her death, which has drawn public outrage.

KOTA KINABALU: The Himpunan Mega Solidariti #JusticeForZara rally will proceed as planned on Saturday, despite the ongoing reinvestigation into the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir. Event coordinator Mhd Asisal said the gathering, expected to draw at least 10,000 participants, would take place at the Kota Kinabalu City Hall compound from 2pm. Meanwhile, Suara Mahasiswa UMS activist Muhamad Fadhil Muhamad Kasim said the public's decision to rally was driven by a lack of trust in the system, an issue that prompted the involvement of Bukit Aman police, the exhumation of Zara's body, and calls for an inquest to reinvestigate the case. "The people's anger stems from integrity and professionalism issues, particularly the non-compliance with SOP by the Sabah police. The police must take responsibility for their negligence, as public confidence in their handling of criminal cases is waning. "Speculation is damaging, but it arises because the authorities failed to conduct a thorough investigation. The delay in the probe has heightened concerns not only among university students but also in rural communities, where many have school-going children and siblings," he said. Fadhil also criticised politicians for only engaging with Zara's family and speaking out after the case had dragged on for some time. Zara, 13, was found unconscious at her dormitory in SMKA Tunku Mustapha, Papar, on July 16, and was pronounced dead the following day at Queen Elizabeth Hospital here.

Lorry driver pleads not guilty to trying to kill cop by running him over with 4WD vehicle near KL's Akleh exit
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 — A lorry driver pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to attempting to kill a policeman by running him over with a four-wheel drive vehicle, causing injuries. Muhammad Farhan Baharudin, 34, was charged with committing the offence against Corporal Mohamad Sallehin Ab Rahman, 35, resulting in the victim suffering an abrasion wound on his right knee, bruising on his right elbow and bruising on the right lower chest wall — injuries which could have been fatal. The offence was allegedly committed at the Ampang–Kuala Lumpur Elevated Expressway (AKLEH) exit to Jalan Tun Razak at 9.05am on August 8 this year. The charge, under Section 307 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum sentence of 10 years' imprisonment and a fine, or up to 20 years' imprisonment if injury is caused, upon conviction. Judge Izralizam Sanusi allowed bail at RM8,000 with one surety and ordered the accused to report to a nearby police station once a month. The court set October 6 for mention. Deputy public prosecutor Faizah Khalilah Zaberi appeared for the prosecution, while lawyer Mohd Fikah Sanusi represented the accused. — Bernama

Selangor police: Bukit Aman joins probe into assault on Rafizi's son at Putrajaya mall, suspect still unidentified
PETALING JAYA, Aug 14 — Police said officers from the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigations Department have been roped in to assist in ongoing investigations following an assault against the son of former minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli at a shopping mall in Putrajaya yesterday. Selangor police chief Commissioner Datuk Shazeli Kahar said a thorough investigation on all aspects is underway, including determining the motive of the attack. 'The victim is reportedly in stable condition at present. 'At this moment, the suspect remains unidentified. Any updates will be informed to the public from time to time,' he told a media briefing at the Selangor contingent headquarters here. He also confirmed that a police report was lodged on the attack carried out by an unknown individual against a child at IOI City Mall, Putrajaya yesterday. Asked on why the suspect remained unidentified despite having a closed-circuit surveillance system at the shopping mall, Shazeli said the suspect had concealed their identity by wearing dark clothings and a helmet. Rafizi yesterday confirmed in a statement that at the time of the incident, two male suspects dressed in black, wearing helmets and riding a motorcycle had followed his wife's car before one of them pulled his son away and stabbed him with a hypodermic needle. The PKR politician further claimed that a group of whistleblowers had approached him last week with information on a scandal, and alleged that an attack on his son was meant to stop him from pursuing the matter. Shazeli said six witness statements have been recorded so far, including Rafizi himself and his wife, who were present at the time of the incident. Shazeli also said police have yet to receive a report from Rafizi's wife on the alleged threat message sent to her but urged her to do so as soon as possible. Earlier today. Rafizi said that following his son's attack yesterday afternoon, his wife had received threatening messages including a text saying: 'Be quiet, if you continue, AIDS'.
