YESTERDAY saw one of football's biggest annual fixtures, the Champions League final.
Paris St Germain took on Inter Milan for the ultimate prize, but there was a surprise in the stands for Celtic fans harking back to their own glory at that level.

A flag spotted in the PSG end portrayed the Lisbon Lions, the Hoops team who famously won the European Cup in 1967.
The display seen in the crowd in Munich's Allianz Arena was unfurled as the French team matched the achievement of that legendary Glasgow side.
Lifting Europe's biggest trophy wrapped up a major quadruple, making Luis Enrique's men the first to do so since Jock Stein set the record.
PSG stormed to the league title comfortably this season, won the Coupe de France last weekend in a 3-0 victory over Reims, and lifted the Trophee des Champions against Monaco.
The 1966-67 Celtic team beat Rangers to the league and League Cup, and pipped Aberdeen to the Scottish Cup.
And of course to wrap it up, both quadruple winners added a UCL to their trophy cabinet in a final against Inter Milan.
It was 2-1 all those decades ago in Lisbon, but this year's contest in Germany was a much more comfy 5-0 romp.
This weekend the scorers were Achraf Hakimi, Desire Doue, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and 19-year-old Senny Mayulu.
58 years ago it was Tommy Gemmell and Stevie Chalmers who netted for the victors who are still hailed as heroes to this day.
The seemingly all-conquering PSG team have picked up the ultimate honour in just their first season after the departure of Kylian Mbappe.

The Hoops seem a while away yet from being hopeful of picking up another Champions League and major quadruple, but the domestically dominant team also failed to earn a treble this campaign.
Brendan Rodgers' side ran away with the Scottish Premiership and got the League Cup via penalty shootout against rivals Rangers.
But last month Aberdeen surprised them, again in a shootout, and lifted their first Scottish Cup in 35 years.
The 1990 final win for the Dons once again came on pens against the Celts.
Captain Callum McGregor said after the game that missing out on the cup and treble opportunity was amongst the worst moments of his career.

However, it has previously been reported that Onana wants to fight for his place at Old Trafford. "Andre's plan is to stay in Manchester and he wants to knuckle down and get United back to where they should be," a source was quoted as saying last month. "His sole focus is on United and nothing else. He's a confident person and wants to prove the doubters wrong. He knows he has made mistakes but he sees proving people wrong as a challenge." Barcelona's Rashford call Barcelona have been linked with a move for Marcus Rashford and the club's sporting director, Deco, has delivered an update on their transfer plans. "We have been focusing on renewing contracts, after that, we'll discuss players to come," Deco told BBC Sport. "Of course, these two players, like you mentioned, they are good but have contracts in their clubs, so we won't speak because it's not fair. But when you decide to go to the market, for sure, we find some names. In my opinion, we don't need to bring many players. "When I speak with the agents of the players, everyone wants to come or stay. So this is important. The image of the club is still good. We are proud because Barcelona is still such a big club, and the way we are playing football makes players want to come." Man Utd eye Udinese star According to Italian outlet Messaggero Veneto, United are interested in Udinese defender Oumar Solet. Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin issues 'more steps being taken' summer transfer window vow
Boss Jimmy Thelin insists plans are in place to ensure Aberdeen deliver a bright future by building on the Scottish Cup glory. The Dons ended a 35-year Scottish Cup drought when lifting the trophy at Hampden by overcoming Celtic in the final. Thelin has wasted no time in strengthening his Scottish Cup-winning squad – with two signings already confirmed. Australians Nicolas Milanovic and Nick Suman will both join the Dons in the summer, having agreed pre-contracts. Recently-crowned A-League player of the year Milanovic was snapped up for a fee of around £400,000 from Western Sydney Wanderers. Winger Milanovic, 23, will move to Pittodrie on a three-year deal, with the Dons holding the option to extend that to a fourth year. Milanovic was recently on international duty with the Australia squad at a training camp in Abu Dhabi, having received a debut senior call-up. Keeper Suman, 25, will join the Dons upon the expiry of his current deal with Cove Rangers later this month. Aberdeen beat off interest from Hibs, Dundee United and Motherwell to land the former Australia under-23 international. Thelin will use the summer transfer window to build a squad capable of balancing European league action and domestic commitments. Aberdeen will enter the Europa League play-off stage next season. Even if the Reds lose the play-off, they have the safety net of dropping down into the Conference League. Chairman Dave Cormack has vowed to back Thelin during the summer window. Thelin is set to enter his third transfer window as Aberdeen manager. His bid to sign players will be boosted by the lure of European league football. The draw for the Europa League play-off will be made on August 4 with the ties played on August 21 and 28. Thelin was initially confirmed as Aberdeen manager on April 16 last year having agreed to sign on at the Dons from Elfsborg. However, he remained at the Allsvenskan side until the Swedish mid-season break, officially starting at Pittodrie in early June. Thelin said: 'It has been a long season, but I have to say it has gone very quickly. 'I started in Elfsborg and I did the pre-season there, then six months before coming to Aberdeen. 'So for a year-and-a-half I have been working through a lot of windows, but it has all happened so quickly it feels like yesterday. 'I have to say I am in a really good position with the opportunity I've had coming here.'

Rangers chief Kevin Thelwell says head coach appointment due in ‘coming days'
Thelwell has officially started his role but had already been working on finding a new man to lead the first team after Barry Ferguson's spell in interim charge ended at the close of the season. Outgoing Real Madrid assistant manager Davide Ancelotti remains the favourite with former Swansea and Southampton boss Russell Martin also heavily linked. Steven Gerrard reportedly dropped out of the race. Thelwell is looking to remove further uncertainty over the club's future after a takeover by an American consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises was confirmed on Friday. The 51-year-old, who has left a similar role with Everton, said on the Rangers website: 'It's a great honour to be joining Rangers, particularly at such an exciting moment in the club's history. Kevin Thelwell has today begun his role as Sporting Director as the summer of change here at Rangers moves up a gear. Rangers confirmed that Thelwell had brought Dan Purdy with him from Everton to replace Nils Koppen as technical director. Koppen, who arrived from PSV Eindhoven in December 2023, initially as director of football recruitment, will work with Thelwell and Purdy to 'support a smooth handover'. Purdy spent 11 years at Everton working in scouting and analysis and most recently head of recruitment. Rangers stated Purdy would lead on recruitment and scouting across the men's, women's and academy programmes. Thelwell arrives after three years at Everton. He previously worked for the Football Association of Wales and was head of the youth academies of Preston, Derby and Wolves, the first two working under former Rangers midfielder Billy Davies. He moved to New York Red Bulls to become head of sport for two years before his switch to Everton. 'This is a new chapter for Rangers, and while we recognise success won't come easy, our goal is clear: we need to win,' he said. 'My focus is on delivering that, with discipline and ambition. We'll give everything to move this club forward as quickly and sustainably as we can.'
