'Our offense is super balanced and our defense is super deep,' said Prep senior captain Sam Wilmot. 'I just love this team so much because we do it together. We really embody what team means.'

Junior goalie Mattheus Du Plessis produced 16 saves behind stellar play from Wilmot, Jack Weissenburger, and Nick Schibli, but Prep's offense stalled down the stretch, as top-seeded BC High clawed back with a pair of dramatic goals from Murphy Belvin and Nick Emsing (3 goals) in the final minute to force overtime.

After All-American FOGO Will Crawford won the opening draw, and McGowan and McCarthy had their shots denied by BC High goalie TJ Emsing (13 saves), Kelly was able to seal the deal.
'It's always dogfights with [BC High],' said Kelly, whose Prep team won a 7-6 overtime battle in the regular season. 'It's just a battle of attrition, who is going to grind it out, and I think that showed today.'

Both Kelly and Wilmot had older brothers star for Prep during a dynastic run that now includes 53 straight wins against in-state competition. Both seniors and Pynchon credited members of the 2020 and 2021 classes for setting the foundation that allows the program to dominate annually. Like Kelly's brother, Mike, and Sam Wilmot's brother, Charlie, both graduated in 2021, winning title as seniors
'From day one, this is our goal,' said Wilmot, who is committed to Richmond. 'Obviously we take it one step at a time, but we try to max out the days every year. We remember how good this feels and that's why we work all year for it.'
BC High and St. John's Prep couldn't have been closer this season, twice going to overtime.

How many years does LSU football coach Brian Kelly have left on his contract?

LSU football coach Brian Kelly is gearing up for year four at the helm of LSU's program. That means it's time for an annual check-in on Kelly's contract with LSU. LSU hired Kelly in late 2021 after the veteran coach had a lengthy tenure at Notre Dame. LSU had to pay up and offered Kelly a 10-year deal worth $95 million. With three years in the books, Kelly is under contract for seven more years at LSU. Kelly, 63, would be 70 when the deal expires. According to the USA TODAY Sports coach salary database, Kelly was the No. 8 highest-paid coach in the sport last year. Kelly's total pay was $9,975,000 in 2024. As of Dec. 1, 2024, Kelly's buyout was $61,738,333. LSU would have owed Kelly 90% of his total remaining salary. We don't know the exact details for the 2025 buyout yet, but it's likely a similar structure. LSU doesn't expect to be considering that buyout this year, though. Given the talent on this LSU roster, the Tigers are expected to compete for the SEC title and a College Football Playoff appearance.

See where ESPN ranked LSU football in latest SEC power rankings

LSU landed in the top five for ESPN's preseason SEC power rankings ahead of the 2025 college football season. The Tigers checked in at No. 4 on the list. Texas, Georgia, and Alabama take up the top three spots, respectively, while Texas A&M rounds out the top five. "The Tigers are probably going to score a lot of points, and if Brian Kelly can figure out how to turn around his defense, they might be a legitimate SEC title and CFP contender. LSU has dropped five straight season openers, three under Kelly, and it plays at Clemson on Aug. 30." Behind second-year starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, LSU's offense looks primed for another high-octane year under head coach Brian Kelly. His staff brought in multiple receivers with SEC experience as part of the nation's top transfer portal class in 2025. Following a second full offseason with defensive coordinator Blake Baker, the defense filled critical needs in the secondary and at edge rusher to put together a unit with loads of potential. The question will be whether it can contain some of the nation's most potent offenses. The Tigers will be tested immediately in a week one contest at Clemson. They'll need to contain professional-level talent at wide receiver as well as quarterback Cade Klubnik.

Brian Kelly updates status of LSU football QB Garrett Nussmeier after injury rumor

LSU football head coach Brian Kelly updated the status of quarterback Garrett Nussmeier ahead of practice on Friday. According to Kelly, Nussmeier had patella tendinitis and will take the field in fall camp in "a practice situation." Nussmeier was out throwing the football today. "This is a chronic situation. It's tendinitis. It's like a bad ankle. He just planted the wrong way. When you have a preexisting condition, that can happen," Kelly said. "On a scale of 1 to 10, this is a 1.5." Kelly's update follows unsubstantiated rumors that Nussmeier suffered a serious knee injury on Wednesday. But reports were quick to kill the rumor. Initial reporting on Nussmeier's status said the gunslinger was "fine." Concerns about an ACL tear were alleviated prior to Friday's update from Kelly. Nussmeier will likely work back to full speed and take the field in LSU's week one matchup at Clemson against fellow Heisman Trophy contender quarterback Cade Klubnik. Nussmeier will enter his fifth season in Baton Rouge in pursuit of the program's all-time leading passer mark. He needs under 4,000 yards to claim the title. Last year, the Lake Charles, LA native threw for 4,052 yards and 29 touchdowns. He led the Tigers to a Texas Bowl victory and 9-4 overall record.
