State Trooper prepares for plea deal, admitting he shot himself

Yahoo08-05-2025
NEW YORK (PIX11) — From hero State Trooper to disgraced State Trooper, that was the scene that played out in Nassau County Court where Thomas Mascia was prepared to admit that he actually shot himself, and not by an unknown shooter as he originally reported.
'We are not here today to celebrate,' said Attorney Jeffrey Lichtman. 'We are here today because he's suffering significant mental illness.'

The 27-year-old former officer showed up in court with his mother and father, prepared to accept a plea deal, admitting that he has been suffering from mental issues for years.
It was last October when Mascia claimed he was shot in the leg by a motorist he went to help on the Southern State Parkway. That triggered a multi-state manhunt for the assailant.
Mascia received a hero's reception when he was released from the hospital. Holes were quickly punched in his story until it was determined there was no assailant.
In court, the judge asked Mascia if he was in good mental health to take a guilty plea. Initially, he said no, which quickly changed to yes after conferring with his lawyer. Out of caution, the judge pushed the plea deal to another date.
'I'm not telling him to lie,' said Lichtman. 'I want him to tell the truth, and if he says he's not feeling well mentally, it doesn't mean for a second that he is unable to take a guilty plea.'

Mascia would not speak to reporters as he left the court. He is charged with tampering with physical evidence, falsely reporting an incident, and official misconduct. His parents were also prepared to plead guilty to a charge of illegal gun possession found in their home. The family said they wore green in support of Mental Health Awareness Month.
Mascia's lawyer said his client had hoped to get this over with today. 'I wouldn't say he was disappointed, but numb and shocked from this whole thing to go through. He was a decorated officer. Now, he's sitting in the blink of an eye as a criminal defendant with the press chasing him down the street.'
Mascia will be back in court on May 21 when his guilty plea will get him six months in jail and five years' probation. In addition, he'll have to pay more than $289,5000 in restitution for the expenses police encountered trying to find an assailant who never existed.

Man reunited with stolen American Bully dog in the Bronx: ‘I want to cry'

THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) — A man was tearfully reunited with his American Bully dog days after the pup was snatched on a Bronx subway train over the weekend, according to police. 'Overwhelmed and I want to cry. I'm in a big city in New York, you may not find your dog,' Charles Williams told PIX11 News. Sources said a good Samaritan found the 2-year-old brown and black dog and dropped it off at the 44th Precinct in the Bronx on Thursday morning. Detectives then called Williams to give him the good news. As an officer walked out of the precinct with the leashed dog, Williams and the excited pup happily greeted each other with plenty of hugs and kisses. 'My anxiety was up. I suffer from depression, and I was very depressed,' Williams said. 'He depends on me, and I depend and him. And I feel like I let him down, and don't worry, it will never happen again.' The 45-year-old owner told PIX11 News he was on the D train early Sunday morning to escape the heat and fell asleep because he was tired. Police said the suspect allegedly took the dog while Williams was asleep on a northbound D train near the Bainbridge Avenue and East 206th Street station at around 6 a.m. There have been no arrests. The investigation is ongoing. Submit tips to police by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), visiting downloading the NYPD Crime Stoppers mobile app, or texting 274637 (CRIMES) then entering TIP577. Newly homeless man reunited with dog snatched from him on NYC subway: ‘He's all I have'

He got his Roc back. A newly homeless New Yorker was filmed having an emotional reunion with his best friend, his pet dog Roc, four days after he was stolen from beside him as he napped on a subway. 'I'm right here — come here, baby,' Charles Williams, 45, told his American Bully puppy as PIX11 News caught their reunion Thursday outside the 44th Precinct stationhouse in the Bronx. PIX11 News / YouTube Williams' 'very loving dog' was stolen from him as he slept on a northbound D train heading into the Norwood-205th St. station on Sunday morning, he said. The dog lover said he has been homeless for around a month, and was only sleeping on the train because of his devotion to his dog, who is not allowed to stay with him in shelters. He feared the worst — until the surprise news that his stolen dog had been dropped off outside the stationhouse just a few blocks from Yankee Stadium. 'I want to cry,' Williams told PIX11 after his reunion. 'I know God is real, because I'm in a big city, and in a big city like New York, you know, you may not find your dog,' he said, assuming he wouldn't get him back. 6 Williams' 'very loving dog' was stolen from him as he slept on a northbound D train heading into the Norwood-205th St. station on Sunday morning, he said.
