BP makes oil discovery off US Gulf coast

-BP has made an oil discovery at the Far South field in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, it said on Monday, as the energy major seeks to grow production under a strategy reset announced earlier this year.
The exploration well was drilled in Green Canyon Block 584 about 120 miles (193.12 km) off the coast of Louisiana. Both the initial well and a sidetrack encountered oil. Preliminary data indicates a potentially commercial volume of oil and gas, the company said in a statement.
It also said it plans to increase output in the Gulf of Mexico to 400,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day by 2030. It expects global production to reach 2.3 million to 2.5 million boepd by the end of the decade, with potential to grow through 2035.
London-listed shares of BP were up 4.72% in early trade.
BP is the operator of Far South with a 57.5% interest, while partner Chevron holds 42.5%.
BP announced a strategy shift in February to turn around its underperformance, cutting planned investment in renewable energy to refocus on oil and gas.
Around 1 million boepd are expected to be delivered from the U.S. onshore and offshore regions by 2030.
BP plans more exploration in the ocean basin. It has approved the development of the Kaskida oilfield, which lies in a complex geological structure called the Paleogene, and plans to go ahead with a second Paleogene development, Tiber, later this year, CEO Murray Auchincloss told a conference last month.

Chevron offers to pay Pullman for contaminated soil cleanup

Jun. 7—Chevron oil and gas company has offered to reimburse the city of Pullman for cleaning up contaminated soil during its downtown revitalization project. The Pullman City Council is set to accept the energy giant's offer at its regular meeting Tuesday night at the Pullman City Hall. Officials will also hear an update on Project Downtown Pullman's progress. Construction crews encountered contaminated soil last summer while installing underground utilities on Main and Paradise streets in the vicinity where a Chevron gas station once sat, according to documents attached to the meeting's agenda. The city had incurred additional costs of $112,877 to properly remove, haul and dispose of more than 526 tons of contaminated soil, the documents said. Of that figure, the documents indicated the city also financed disposal fees, testing and engineering, as well as ductile iron pipe for waterline construction as required by the Washington State Department of Ecology and the Department of Health. If the offer made by Chevron Environmental Management Co. is accepted by the city, the company will be released from liabilities resulting from the Pullman Downtown Improvements Project.

BP overhauling TA's marketing department

This story was originally published on C-Store Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily C-Store Dive newsletter. BP is making changes to TravelCenters of America's marketing department that will result in layoffs through the rest of 2025, a company spokesperson confirmed to C-Store Dive. The changes are part of BP's ongoing strategy reset, which launched earlier this year to improve the company's performance, drive cash flow and increase shareholder value, the spokesperson said. They did not share how many team members are expected to be impacted. This comes about five months after BP revealed plans to cut about 5% of its global workforce by 2026. At the time, a BP spokesperson declined to share specifics on the company divisions and regions impacted by the layoffs.. In a memo sent to BP's employees back in January, CEO Murray Auchincloss said the 5% workforce reduction aimed to help the oil giant position itself as a 'simpler, more focused' company. That still appears to be the case with the latest changes at TA, as a source familiar with the matter said the latest moves aim to unify all marketing functions under the BP umbrella. This source added that some employees from TA's marketing team remain with the company, but they're now employed by BP instead of TA. In a statement to C-Store Dive, BP's spokesperson said the company is overhauling its marketing functions to help its businesses and brands be more successful and improve connections with customers. 'In February 2025 we proposed changes to our marketing organization and how we work, and as a result, this will impact roles across our marketing teams through 2025, including in TravelCenters of America,' BP's spokesperson said. BP acquired TA in May 2023. The acquisition, which included TA's 300 travel centers and 20,000 employees, 'fundamentally changed' BP's U.S. footprint, the oil giant said in its 2024 annual report. It's unclear how many of those 20,000 team members were in marketing. Recommended Reading BP to cut about 5% of global workforce
