Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared an update on the country's ambitious Bullet Train Project on Tuesday, announcing the completion of 300 kilometres of viaduct.Taking to his official handle on X, the minister posted a video along with the caption, "300 km viaduct completed. -- Bullet Train Project."The project is being implemented by the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL).Approximately 76 per cent of the excavation work has been completed on the Mumbai bullet train station located at Bandra Kurla Complex, which is the only underground station on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor According to a release, 14.2 lakh cubic metres of the excavation work has been completed. 18.7 lakh cubic metres of earthwork must be excavated from this site.Three batching plants of 120 cum/hr capacity are functional at site.Batching plants are provided with an ice plant and a chiller plant that help control concrete temperature. The site is provided with a modern concrete lab, with facilities like a Water Permeability Test, a Rapid Chloride Penetration Test, etc. All concrete tests are conducted at the site, and samples are intermittently sent to a reputed lab.Base Slab is being cast with M-60 grade of temperature-controlled concrete. Each base slab casting required 3,000 to 4,000 cubic metres of concrete at controlled temperatures, which is being produced by in-situ batching plants and chiller plants. The platform is planned at a depth of about 26 metres below ground level. There will be three floors including platform, concourse and service floor. Excavation for the said work is being done till a depth of 32 metres (approx. 100 ft) from the ground level, which is equivalent to a 10-storey building. The station will have six platforms, each approximately 415 m long (sufficient to accommodate a 16-coach bullet train). It will be connected to the metro and the road. Two entry/exit points are planned, one to facilitate access to the nearby Metro station of Metro Line 2B, and the other towards the MTNL building. The station has been planned in a way that ample space is available for passenger movement and amenities at the concourse and platform level.A dedicated skylight provision has been made for natural lighting.

Metro seeks 20cr from KMDA for Chingrighata subway
Kolkata: Metro has asked KMDA to deposit 50% — Rs 20 crore — of the cost of the proposed underpass at Chingrighata. Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), the implementing agency of the New Garia-Airport corridor, will share half the cost "according to the agreement with the state govt". KMDA has also been asked to approve the construction methodology submitted by RVNL three years ago. TOI reported on May 28 that "RVNL is preparing the detailed project report for the proposed three-way pedestrian underpass at Chingrighata", after cops decided to withhold traffic blocks at the busy crossing for two weekend nights until the underpass was built. The weekend traffic regulation is needed for bridging the last 366m viaduct gap of the Orange line's Ruby-Sector V section. Girder-launching work at the Chingrighata crossing has been stalled since Feb 2. RVNL cannot meet its June 2025 deadline to complete the 8km Phase II. KMC's nod for the underpass' basic design, submitted by RVNL in June 2022, came on April 8, 2025. "Even as the most crucial part of the project remains stalled at Chingrighata, RVNL is going ahead with the underpass construction, as told by the state govt," a railway official said. The urban development department planned the underpass at Chingrighata along with the foot overbridge as a two-pronged approach towards reducing accidents at the busy intersection. At a proposed depth of two-and-a-half metres, the underpass would be three-and-a-half metres wide, with openings on Canal South Road, Sukantanagar, and Jal Vayu Vihar.

Union asks for more rakes, personnel for Purple, Orange Lines
Kolkata: The Pragatisil Sramik Karmachari Union has urged Metro Railway to add rakes and traffic personnel for the Purple and Orange lines, which are set to extend operations now that they are equipped with the advanced signalling system. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On behalf of the INTTUC-affiliated Metro workers' union, general secretary Samir Bera wrote to Metro's chief operations manager. With no fresh recruitment and staff members continuously being transferred out of the North-South (Blue) line, the situation is worse for the truncated Purple (Joka-Majerhat) and Orange (New Garia-Ruby) lines. "The launch of the Yellow Line and the Green Line's last leg is imminent. We welcome the opening of new lines. Unfortunately, the workforce is dragged from the Blue Line, which is already reeling under an acute staff shortage," wrote Bera. Union vice-president Subhasis Sengupta said, "So many extensions but there aren't enough rakes, motormen, or traffic personnel to operate them." In a report titled "Lone rake pulls Purple Line ops, normal services from today", TOI highlighted the rake and manpower personnel issues. Until April, the Purple line offered 18 services at 50-minute intervals. Following the signalling upgrade, 44 services were added from May 9, and the six-hour services doubled. However, a single rake continued to run up and down the 8-km corridor, while another remained on standby.

How Indian Railways plans to curb fraud with Tatkal booking overhaul
In response to mounting complaints from passengers, the Ministry of Railways is overhauling the Tatkal ticket booking system to enhance speed, fairness, and transparency. Aadhaar verification will be mandatory for all Tatkal bookings starting later this month, aiming to reduce automated scalping and unauthorised access. Tatkal tickets—meant for last-minute travel and released a day before departure—are often bought within seconds by bots or agents, leaving genuine travellers stranded. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that Aadhaar-linked IRCTC accounts will get priority during the first 10 minutes of Tatkal sales. "Even authorised IRCTC agents will not be allowed to book tickets during this window," the Ministry said in a statement. Verified users get priority access Under the new system, Aadhaar-authenticated users will have a clear advantage. Unverified users will need to wait three days post-registration before being allowed to book Tatkal, Premium Tatkal, or Opening ARP tickets. Railway officials indicated that Aadhaar checks may also be extended to counter-based Tatkal bookings to create parity between online and offline platforms. Anti-bot tech and system upgrades To prevent misuse, the Railways has implemented anti-bot measures and partnered with a leading Content Delivery Network (CDN) to improve speed and resilience. Previously, bots accounted for nearly 50 per cent of login attempts during Tatkal hours. But system upgrades and AI-powered monitoring have led to a major drop. Over 25 million suspicious accounts have been deactivated. On May 22, 2025, a record 31,814 Tatkal tickets were booked in just one minute. Daily IRCTC logins rose 20 per cent in FY25 to 8.2 million, while daily bookings grew nearly 12 per cent. Over 86 per cent of reserved tickets are now booked online. Aadhaar at the centre of a secure system Earlier, Aadhaar authentication was handled by third-party systems. A recent Gazette notification now enables faster in-house verification. 'IRCTC will conduct special verification drives and shut down accounts deemed suspicious,' said an official. Even railway staff—including ticket checkers and train crews—are now covered under Aadhaar-based authentication for internal operations. Public outrage spurred reform The changes follow public uproar over IRCTC's booking glitches, sparked by a viral post from Thyrocare founder Dr A Velumani. 'Shocking. If it is true, it is betrayal!!' Velumani posted on X, attaching a screenshot of IRCTC freezing at 10 am during Tatkal bookings. He later suggested hourly load distribution to reduce server stress. His remarks triggered a wave of criticism online, prompting the Railways to fast-track reforms. Offline cancellations now simpler In Parliament, the Railway Minister also said that passengers holding physical tickets can now cancel them online via IRCTC or by calling 139. However, refunds will still be issued at reservation counters. Responding to BJP MP Medha Vishram Kulkarni, Vaishnaw clarified that 'waitlisted PRS counter tickets must be cancelled in person as per refund rules.' Faster platform, safer booking With 87 per cent of IRCTC's static content now served via CDN, system performance has improved. Passengers are encouraged to report online issues through the Cyber Crime Portal. If you've struggled to book Tatkal tickets before, help may be near—just ensure your Aadhaar is linked. In this new regime, identity equals access.
