Cincinnati Reds spring training: Reds deal Chicago Cubs first Cactus League loss

Yahoo02-03-2025

MESA, Arizona – The Cincinnati Reds (5-3-1) scored first and added on throughout the game to hand the Chicago Cubs (8-1-3) their first loss of the Cactus League season, 7-3, Sunday afternoon at Sloan Park in Mesa.
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Carson Spiers became the first Reds pitcher of the spring to complete three innings in a start, striking out three and allowing one run as a result of his lone walk.
Spiers walked Jon Berti leading off the second, and after a hit to center sent Berti to third, he scored on a one-out grounder to second by Travis Jankowski. Spiers retired the final six batters he faced.
He was so efficient during the 37-pitch outing that he finished his prescribed workload in the bullpen.
The Reds extended a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth when right fielder Jake Fraley and designated hitter Blake Dunn slugged back-to-back home runs to right and left, respectively, off right-hander Keegan Thompson with one out.
It was the first homer of the spring for each.
Fraley added a run-scoring single in the sixth, followed by Dunn beating out an infield hit.
Will Benson hit the third homer of the day with a solo shot in the ninth inning.
Cincinnati Reds catcher drove in the first run of the game with a two-out double into the left-field corner, then led off the sixth with a double off the center-field wall on one hop and later scored the Reds' sixth run – offering a glimpse into why manager Terry Francona said he'll look to use him as a DH when backup Jose Trevino starts behind the plate.
Stephenson is 3-for-11 with three walks this spring.
Veteran reliever Bryan Shaw, a favorite of Francona from his workhorse Cleveland days, struck out Miguel Amaya to start the fourth but couldn't get out of the inning as the Cubs rallied for a single, walk, double and walk following the Amaya out.
A shallow liner to right forced the runners to hold, but Shaw followed with a bases-loaded walk on a 3-2 pitch to Ian Happ and was pulled.
He has allowed three runs in 2 2/3 innings across three outings this spring, striking out six and walking five (eight hits allowed).
The Cincinnati Reds play their first night game of the spring Monday, hosting the defending NL Central-champion Milwaukee Brewers at 8:05 p.m. (ET) at Goodyear Ballpark. LH Nick Lodolo vs. LH Aaron Ashby. It's also the first game of the spring televised by rebranded TV partner FanDuel Sports. It can be heard on WLW-700 radio.

Phillies RHP Aaron Nola sidelined 2 more weeks with rib injury

Rather than leaning on favorites like Paul Skenes and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Jay Croucher and Drew Dinsick share why bettors should consider targeting upside picks such as MacKenzie Gore. PHILADELPHIA — Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola suffered another setback in his return to pitch when an MRI showed he has an injury in his right ribcage and will be shut down for two weeks. Nola had already been out since early May with a sprained right ankle that was progressing more slowly than expected. He experienced stiffness in his right side last week in Toronto and that wiped out a planned session against live batters. Nola underwent testing this week and had what the Phillies called a stress reaction in his right ribcage. Phillies manager Rob Thomson said ahead of Tuesday's game against the Chicago Cubs that Nola was unsure how the injury may have happened. Nola is 1-7 with a 6.16 ERA in nine starts. Nola, who signed a $172 million, seven-year contract ahead of the 2024 season, injured his ankle on May 8 during pregame agility drills when the Phillies played the Rays at Steinbrenner Field. Nola is 105-86 with a 3.78 ERA in 11 seasons with the Phillies. Thomson said slugger Bryce Harper was starting to feel better as he recovers from right wrist inflammation that last Friday landed him on the 10-day injured list. The two-time National League MVP and eight-time All-Star is hitting .258 with nine home runs, 34 RBIs and eight stolen bases in 57 games. He missed five games, from May 26 to June 2, with a bruised right elbow after being hit by a pitch from Atlanta's Spencer Strider.

The Chicago Cubs (40-25) are in first place in the NL Central and are the NL's second seed, but their offense disappeared for part of their series vs. the Detroit Tigers (43-24). They lost 3-1 on Friday, won 6-1 on Saturday, and lost 4-0 on Sunday. Advertisement The squad totaled just four hits in the latter contest, and second baseman Nico Hoerner got ejected by home plate umpire Derek Thomas for arguing balls and strikes in the top of the fifth inning. Shortstop Dansby Swanson hit a leadoff double with the Cubs down 2-0 to start the frame before Hoerner came up. The 28-year-old worked a 2-2 count before taking a pitch low and inside, which Thomas incorrectly called a third strike. Hoerner revealed what he said to Thomas before getting tossed, via Marquee Sports Network. Chicago Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner (2).Sergio Estrada-Imagn Images "I said, 'You're having a really bad day,'" the 5-foot-11-inch, 200-pounder said. He finished the game 0-for-2 and was replaced by backup Vijal Brujan, who went 0-for-1. Advertisement Hoerner is now slashing .286/.331/.357 with 28 RBI over 61 games. Tigers starting pitcher Jack Flaherty tossed a six-inning shutout with two hits and nine strikeouts against three walks in 94 pitches. The right-hander bested Cubs hurler Caleb Horton, who coughed up four runs on seven hits in five innings while adding six strikeouts and two walks. Chicago will continue its road trip against the Philadelphia Phillies (37-28) on Monday before hosting the Pittsburgh Pirates (26-40), Milwaukee Brewers (35-31), and the Seattle Mariners (32-31).
