Reds place RHP Carson Spiers (shoulder) on 15-day injured list
April 21 - The Cincinnati Reds placed right-hander Carson Spiers on the 15-day injured list on Sunday due to a right shoulder impingement and selected the contract of right-hander Randy Wynne from Triple-A Louisville. Spiers had been recalled from Louisville on Friday and was supposed to start Sunday's road game against the Baltimore Orioles in place of left-hander Nick Lodolo (paternity leave). Instead, Spiers was called into duty on Saturday with the Reds' bullpen already thin. He threw 94 pitches (52 for strikes) in four innings of relief in a 9-5 loss to the Orioles. Spiers allowed four runs on five hits -- including two home runs -- and four walks with three strikeouts. "We called him, and we were going to send him back (to Louisville). Before that even happened, the trainers came in and they gave me the heads-up," Reds manager Terry Francona said. "So we talked to him, and he kind of fessed up that it had been bothering him actually since spring training. "I told him, 'A couple of thoughts. One is, I admire your guts, and two, I want to wring your neck for not telling us.' He tried to gut it out, and you appreciate that, but also, you don't want to hurt somebody." Spiers, 27, was scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday in Cincinnati to diagnose the extent of his injury. "It's just been a little nagging thing in the back of my shoulder," Spiers said. "It's frustrating, but it will be good to get a sense of clarity on what it is and go from there. "It's one of those things when I'm playing catch, I kind of feel it. But once the adrenaline kicks in, it kind of goes away. Blood gets to the area. It helps calm it down a little bit. Once that adrenaline stops and jabs at me a little bit, I want to go get it figured out and go from there." Spiers is 0-2 this season with a 6.08 ERA, seven walks and 11 strikeouts in 13 1/3 innings over three games (two starts). He has appeared in parts of three seasons since 2023 and is a career 5-10 with a 5.69 ERA, one save, 41 walks and 103 strikeouts in 117 innings over 29 games (14 starts). Wynne is a 32-year-old rookie who appeared in one game in relief in 2023 and allowed one run, three hits and one walk in 2 1/3 innings for a 0-1 career record with a 3.86 ERA.

Sustainable wealth manager EQ Investors weighs potential sale
EQ Investors, a provider of sustainable investment management services, is currently evaluating the possibility of a sale with the assistance of a corporate finance adviser. The firm's chair, John Spiers, has cited the transformative impact of AI and the drawbacks of charity ownership as primary reasons for this strategic consideration, reported FT Adviser. John Spiers, who had previously intended to bequeath his shares to the EQ Foundation upon his death, now recognises "significant drawbacks" to this plan. He expressed concerns that a charity's focus on maximising immediate income could impede the long-term growth of EQ Investors. "A charity may struggle to add value to the enterprise or provide additional capital if needed," he explained. The emergence of AI, compared by Spiers to the arrival of desktop computers in the early 1980s, is a significant factor affecting the potential sale. EQ Investors has made it clear that any transaction will be contingent on the preservation of the company's core values and the enhancement of client service. "EQI is a successful and profitable business, so we are under no pressure to conclude a transaction," Spiers reassured. The process of exploring a sale is active, with Spiers confirming that "several promising possibilities" are being considered. He concluded with a commitment to the welfare of EQ Investors' staff and clients, stating: "Ultimately, any decision to partner with a larger organisation will only be made if it benefits our staff and clients." In 2021, EQ Investors partnered with Fintegrate to broaden the accessibility of its Positive Impact and Future Leaders portfolios for more advisers. Carson Spiers impressed in his 2025 debut for the Cincinnati Reds. Here's how
Cincinnati Reds manager Terry Francona didn't need to see Carson Spiers' outing Tuesday against the Texas Rangers to feel secure about the Reds' No. 5 spot in the rotation. Spiers got the start against Texas at Great American Ball Park in the first place because he felt good about Spiers after spring training, and then Spiers rewarded that confidence with a solid first outing in 2025. Advertisement Spiers was the hard-luck losing pitcher on Tuesday, out-dueled by Nathan Eolvaldi, who tossed a complete-game, four-hit shutout as the Rangers blanked the Reds, 1-0, before a crowd of 14,852. Spiers was more than good enough for the win, though. His biggest lapse of the night came early − a solo home run allowed to Wyatt Langford that proved decisive. "He did a really good job. I think the one pitch, the home run, he was trying to go up-and-in and went down-and-in," Francona said afterward. "Even though it was probably a little off the plate, just wasn't the location he was looking for. But, I mean, shoot. He gives us six (innings) and one run, we'll take it." After the Langford home run, Spiers scattered his next five baserunners the rest of the night. Seldom did it feel like Spiers was in trouble, and he exited having thrown an efficient 86 pitches for the contest. Advertisement The only problem was that Eovaldi's 99 pitches and four scattered singles with eight strikeouts and no walks proved marginally better than Spiers' start, plus the contributions of relievers Scott Barlow, Taylor Rogers, and Ian Gibaut (who went 1.1 innings and only allowed a base runner due to an Elly De La Cruz error). "It was a fun little battle between us," Spiers said. "Me and (catcher Austin) Wynns were on the same page from the start, so when the pitcher and catcher are on the same page and flowing through the game, makes it pretty fun." Wynns, who notched one of the four singles off Eovaldi, said Spiers did great overall and bounced back well from the Langford home run. Wynns attributed Spiers recent success − both in spring training and on Tuesday − to a heightened sense of maturity and professionalism around the pitcher. As part of that, Spiers is also leaching knowledge off members of the Reds' formidable group of veteran pitchers. Advertisement "He knows what he wants to do before his start, and then building up to that start day," Wynns said. "I'm proud of the kid, and he's showing it." One turn through the Cincinnati Reds' starting rotation Yeah, there's still 157 games to play in the regular season. Snap reactions to early-season MLB can look foolish within weeks, and sometimes days. The early returns on Cincinnati's starting rotation have been encouraging, though. The second turn through the rotation begins Wednesday when Hunter Greene looks to steer the Reds to a series win over the Rangers at Great American Ball Park in his second start of 2025. Advertisement None of the Reds' starters went fewer than five innings. Collectively, the five pitchers have 27 strikeouts. Greene was an All-Star in 2024, Nick Lodolo said in spring training he was in the best shape of his career, and Nick Martinez had a strong spring. Tuesday made Spiers, who had a 5-7 record in 2024 (22 games, 10 starts), look attractive as the No. 5 starter. Of course, Andrew Abbott will have something to say about the No. 5 spot eventually. Abbott started for Triple-A Louisville in Omaha Tuesday as part of his rehab assignment, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing six hits, two runs, two walks, and striking out four. Advertisement When Abbott comes back to the Reds' big-league roster, Spiers might present the club with a tough decision if he can turn in another start like Tuesday's. That will be a good problem for the team to have, should it arise. "I love the saying 'a rising tide raises all boats,'" Spiers said. "Us five right now, and Andrew's in it too, but us five, we like to kind of compete against each other. When one guy goes out, we all like to put a better outing on top of that. Brady threw a gem yesterday. My goal was to kinda one-up him. It's just kinda fun things like that. The five of us are rolling right now." Cincinnati Reds spring training: Reds deal Chicago Cubs first Cactus League loss
MESA, Arizona – The Cincinnati Reds (5-3-1) scored first and added on throughout the game to hand the Chicago Cubs (8-1-3) their first loss of the Cactus League season, 7-3, Sunday afternoon at Sloan Park in Mesa. Cincinnati Reds right-hander Carson Spiers became the first Reds pitcher of the spring to complete three innings in a start, striking out three and allowing one run as a result of his lone walk. Spiers walked Jon Berti leading off the second, and after a hit to center sent Berti to third, he scored on a one-out grounder to second by Travis Jankowski. Spiers retired the final six batters he faced. He was so efficient during the 37-pitch outing that he finished his prescribed workload in the bullpen. The Reds extended a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth when right fielder Jake Fraley and designated hitter Blake Dunn slugged back-to-back home runs to right and left, respectively, off right-hander Keegan Thompson with one out. It was the first homer of the spring for each. Fraley added a run-scoring single in the sixth, followed by Dunn beating out an infield hit. Will Benson hit the third homer of the day with a solo shot in the ninth inning. Cincinnati Reds catcher drove in the first run of the game with a two-out double into the left-field corner, then led off the sixth with a double off the center-field wall on one hop and later scored the Reds' sixth run – offering a glimpse into why manager Terry Francona said he'll look to use him as a DH when backup Jose Trevino starts behind the plate. Stephenson is 3-for-11 with three walks this spring. Veteran reliever Bryan Shaw, a favorite of Francona from his workhorse Cleveland days, struck out Miguel Amaya to start the fourth but couldn't get out of the inning as the Cubs rallied for a single, walk, double and walk following the Amaya out. A shallow liner to right forced the runners to hold, but Shaw followed with a bases-loaded walk on a 3-2 pitch to Ian Happ and was pulled. He has allowed three runs in 2 2/3 innings across three outings this spring, striking out six and walking five (eight hits allowed). The Cincinnati Reds play their first night game of the spring Monday, hosting the defending NL Central-champion Milwaukee Brewers at 8:05 p.m. (ET) at Goodyear Ballpark. LH Nick Lodolo vs. LH Aaron Ashby. It's also the first game of the spring televised by rebranded TV partner FanDuel Sports. It can be heard on WLW-700 radio.
