Reds place RHP Carson Spiers (shoulder) on 15-day injured list

Reuters21-04-2025

April 21 - The Cincinnati Reds placed right-hander Carson Spiers on the 15-day injured list on Sunday due to a right shoulder impingement and selected the contract of right-hander Randy Wynne from Triple-A Louisville.
Spiers had been recalled from Louisville on Friday and was supposed to start Sunday's road game against the Baltimore Orioles in place of left-hander Nick Lodolo (paternity leave). Instead, Spiers was called into duty on Saturday with the Reds' bullpen already thin.
He threw 94 pitches (52 for strikes) in four innings of relief in a 9-5 loss to the Orioles. Spiers allowed four runs on five hits -- including two home runs -- and four walks with three strikeouts.
"We called him, and we were going to send him back (to Louisville). Before that even happened, the trainers came in and they gave me the heads-up," Reds manager Terry Francona said. "So we talked to him, and he kind of fessed up that it had been bothering him actually since spring training.
"I told him, 'A couple of thoughts. One is, I admire your guts, and two, I want to wring your neck for not telling us.' He tried to gut it out, and you appreciate that, but also, you don't want to hurt somebody."
Spiers, 27, was scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday in Cincinnati to diagnose the extent of his injury.
"It's just been a little nagging thing in the back of my shoulder," Spiers said. "It's frustrating, but it will be good to get a sense of clarity on what it is and go from there.
"It's one of those things when I'm playing catch, I kind of feel it. But once the adrenaline kicks in, it kind of goes away. Blood gets to the area. It helps calm it down a little bit. Once that adrenaline stops and jabs at me a little bit, I want to go get it figured out and go from there."
Spiers is 0-2 this season with a 6.08 ERA, seven walks and 11 strikeouts in 13 1/3 innings over three games (two starts). He has appeared in parts of three seasons since 2023 and is a career 5-10 with a 5.69 ERA, one save, 41 walks and 103 strikeouts in 117 innings over 29 games (14 starts).
Wynne is a 32-year-old rookie who appeared in one game in relief in 2023 and allowed one run, three hits and one walk in 2 1/3 innings for a 0-1 career record with a 3.86 ERA.

Abbott authors shutout as Reds improve to 5-0 vs. Guardians

June 11 - Andrew Abbott threw a three-hitter for Cincinnati's first complete-game shutout in four years and Spencer Steer drove in the only run to give the visiting Reds a 1-0 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday night. Steer's single in the fifth inning off Slade Cecconi (1-3) scored Will Benson and helped Cincinnati earn its fifth consecutive win. The Reds have won six of their last seven and stand two games above .500 for the first time since May 3. Abbott (6-1) had five strikeouts and one walk as he threw 77 of his 110 pitches for strikes. The left-hander gave up hits in the second, fifth and ninth innings, but only let two Guardians get as far as second base. Cleveland, which is 0-5 against its in-state rival this season, put the potential tying run on twice in the ninth. Steven Kwan led off with a walk, but he was erased by David Fry's double-play grounder. Jose Ramirez then singled before Abbott got Carlos Santana to fly out to left to complete his masterpiece. Ramirez's hit extended his career-long on-base streak to 36 games. The six-time All-Star owns hits in 31 of 32 games since his surge began on May 6. Cecconi posted a career-high-tying eight strikeouts in five innings. The right-hander gave up one run on four hits and walked one to fall to 0-3 lifetime against the Reds. Reds center fielder TJ Friedl robbed Fry of an extra-base hit in the fourth, making a running grab just below the top of the wall. He crashed into the padding and spent some time prone on the ground before shaking off his discomfort. One inning later, Guardians first baseman Carlos Santana made back-to-back defensive gems with two on. He caught Matt McLain's foul down the line after being hit from behind by second baseman Angel Martinez, then dove to snare Friedl's bunt attempt. The Reds promoted left-hander Joe La Sorsa from Triple-A Louisville before the game. He filled the roster spot of pitcher Brent Suter, who was placed on the bereavement list. --Field Level Media

Orioles activate 3B Jordan Westburg, OF Cedric Mullins from IL

June 10 - The Baltimore Orioles activated third baseman Jordan Westburg and outfielder Cedric Mullins from the 10-day injured list before Tuesday's game against the Detroit Tigers. Baltimore also demoted top prospect Heston Kjerstad to Triple-A Norfolk and designated infielder Emmanuel Rivera for assignment. Westburg was batting sixth and playing third base on Tuesday while Mullins was serving as the designated hitter and batting ninth. Westburg, 26, last played for the Orioles on April 26 due to a left hamstring strain. He was batting .217 with four homers and six RBIs in 23 games. He was an All-Star last season and batted .264 with 18 homers and 63 RBIs. "I was itching to play some baseball again, so happy to be here," Westburg said before Tuesday's game. "Early on, I felt like I was kind of starting all over again. But toward the end of the week there, started to feel a lot better, and like I'm in a good spot, physically, to jump right back in." Mullins, 30, injured his right hamstring on May 28. He was hitting .232 with 10 homers and 31 RBIs in 50 games this season. He was a 2021 All-Star when he slugged a career-best 30 homers. He has 96 homers, 133 steals and a .251 career average. Kjerstad, 26, was the No. 2 overall selection in the 2020 draft but has been unable to produce at the major league level. Kjerstad was batting .192 with four homers and 19 RBIs in 54 games this season. In 106 games over three seasons, he has a .218 average with 10 homers, 36 RBIs and 88 strikeouts. Wade Miley captures first win since '23 as Reds top Guardians

June 10 - Jake Fraley socked a solo homer in a three-hit game while Wade Miley earned his first victory in nearly two years as the visiting Cincinnati Reds beat the Cleveland Guardians 7-4 on Monday night. Miley (1-0) worked five innings, allowing three runs on five hits in his second appearance since joining the team on Wednesday following his recovery from Tommy John surgery performed in May 2024. The 38-year-old struck out two and walked four. Miley won for the first time since Sept. 21, 2023, when he and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals. The left-hander also made longtime Cleveland manager Terry Francona's return with Cincinnati a successful one. Emilio Pagan worked the ninth inning for his 16th save. The Reds won their fourth straight game overall and clinched the season series with in-state rival Cleveland, claiming custody of the Ohio Cup for the first time in 11 years. Cincinnati won all three at home against the Guardians last month. TJ Friedl hit a solo homer in the third inning, then scored on a Christian Encarnacion-Strand sacrifice fly in the fifth that put Cincinnati ahead for good at 4-3. Gavin Lux (sixth-inning single), Will Benson (seventh-inning single) and Connor Joe (ninth-inning double) tacked on RBI hits for the Reds. The Guardians scored three times in the bottom of the third on singles from Angel Martinez, Jose Ramirez and Carlos Santana to go up 3-2, but Fraley tied it in the fourth with his homer to right-center. Fraley finished 3-for-4, raising his average to .218. Guardians right-hander Luis L. Ortiz (3-7) last 4 2/3 innings and gave up four runs on nine hits. He struck out five and walked one while falling to 1-5 in nine starts since April 23. Cleveland has dropped three of four on a six-game homestand that began with a weekend series against the Houston Astros. Ramirez extended his on-base streak to 35 games, and Bo Naylor hit a solo homer off Graham Ashcraft in the seventh inning. --Field Level Media
