Past the point of safe return, nowhere to go but Antarctica

Just two hours into a
dangerous rescue mission to Antarctica
, the crew on board the Royal New Zealand Defence Force super hercules hit their first snag.
They were told that Christchurch, the designated airport they would divert to if they had to turn around, was too risky for landing.
Freezing fog had already ruled out Invercargill and Dunedin, and now Christchurch. Next on the list was Wellington.
But Wellington's runway was closed for maintenance.

hears how the sole job of one of the two co-pilots on board was to keep watch on the ever-changing, unpredictable weather and find a new destination for the emergency turnaround.
The closed runway problem was sorted, but not before the mission leader got involved from Christchurch and phone calls were made.
It was one of many risks that had to be weighed up against the purpose of the mission - saving a life.
Defence got the call for help from the US National Science Foundation at McMurdo Station to pick up one person who needed urgent medical care, and two others who were also ill.
Squadron leader Adam Palmer was in charge of the mission - his first time in the lead - and watched every moment on his laptop from Christchurch.
He says that the dangers rescuers face could be "any number of things".

"We talk about almost a perfect triangle. You need the aircraft to play the game, the weather in Antarctica to be good, the weather in New Zealand to be good, as well as the weather en route."
But the greatest danger is that the rescue plane goes beyond the point of safe return and the weather turns bad.
The crew took off from Christchurch knowing the weather was not looking good for landing at Phoenix Airfield at McMurdo Station.
"Initially there were reports that there was going to be snow and big reductions in visibility," co-pilot flight lieutenant Ben Pickering says.
The weather forecast kept changing on the flight down but in a positive way, he says, and the poor conditions initially predicted on the runway never eventuated.
From their airbase at Whenuapai, Palmer and Pickering explain the preparations and planning that took place in the five days from the first call to the defence force for help, to take off from Christchurch.
Even though a patient was seriously ill, Palmer says a number of things had to be put in place to minimise the risk, including creating a runway at McMurdo to make landing safe.
"Because it is winter at the moment they haven't maintained the runway to the standard they normally would during the summer season," he says.
A team from the US base had to clear excess snow, groom and compact the 10,000 foot runway.
In its message of praise for the "heroic" mission, the US Embassy says it was a feat that took precision and extraordinary skill. In typical low-key fashion, Pickering describes the landing by captain Andrew Sledger as "good".
Pickering says night vision goggles were used for much of the flight but the clarity of the airfield meant they could remove them for landing - but that in itself was a danger.
"When you take the goggles off suddenly there is no terrain definition. So you get this effect called the black hole effect where if you can imagine the outline of a runway lit up and there's just absolutely nothing around it except for darkness, it just feels like you're floating in space and it can cause some optical illustions where you feel like you're low."
Despite the safe landing, there were more risks to come, including "hot refuelling" the plane in minus 30 degrees Celsius while the patients were loaded on board.
The US Embassy says the NZDF delivered on a mission that was "nothing short of heroic" and that tested "every ounce of skill and bravery".
Palmer says it is the riskiest operation he has overseen but also "massively rewarding".
"Having had the J (hercules) for 11 months to now go and do this is awesome for the team."
Pickering says it is the toughest real-life mission of his career so far.
"When you see the pictures of us landing - from the outside - onto the runway, it would be a pretty significant moment if you needed to leave Antarctica seeing a 730 land ready to pick you up. For me that was pretty cool."

It comes as Auckland's mayor Wayne Brown asked the government to reconsider its opposition to a bed night levy. Brown has long campaigned for a bed tax on visitors to help fund destination marketing and events. Chief operating officer of Sudima Hotels and Hind Management Les Morgan told Morning Report he supported a levy "if no other choice was given to us". "I think that's the starting point that we want to ensure that all sorts of other options for generating funding for these events is explored," he said. "We certainly want to be seen to be supportive. We want to be part of the architecture to ensure that it's designed correctly." Consultation on Auckland Council's annual plan, which included the proposal for a bed night visitor levy, received more than 13,000 pieces of feedback. Morgan said a levy would become too complicated if it was only introduced in Auckland. "We have something like 16 regional councils across New Zealand. If every council was to impose a different rate, how would that be. "If you journey down the country, would you face 5 percent in one town and 10 percent in the other. "A lot of us sell New Zealand Inc overseas. How are we to explain to a tourist that if arrive here you might pay a different tax?" Having the levy ringfenced for major events held in New Zealand made sense, Morgan said. "If you think of New Zealand collectively, there's an opportunity. Auckland alone can't raise enough funds, for instance, to attract a World Cup. But New Zealand can. "So if there was some framework within that where a percentage of the national pot was put aside to attract these major events, "I think that makes sense that we work together." However, he accepted there was some risk of adding further costs on overseas visitors. "I personally have just come back from a sales trip to China and the Chinese market are are very price sensitive at the moment and so are others. "Our visitors to our shores already face a lot of levies and taxes. They face the IVL at the border, potentially face visa costs, they face surcharges on the aeroplane tickets, they get here and pay GST. They play fuel tax like we do, alcohol tax like we do." "Tourism in New Zealand contributes something like $4.1 billion per annum in GST. So there is a lot of tax coming in. The risk is New Zealand is becomes more expensive." Cruise industry brainstorms over falling foreign visitor numbers

Photo: NZ Herald/Paul Taylor The cruise sector hopes crisis talks at this year's industry conference will help chart a course through rocky financial waters. The theme of this year's NZ Cruise Association Conference - 'This is Not a Drill' - speaks for itself. Passenger numbers have fallen year on year , down 20 percent last summer and projected to fall another 20 percent this year, but NZCA chief executive Jacqui Lloyd maintains an optimistic outlook. "It is a little [like] crisis talks, but there is also a lot of positivity," she told RNZ, between panel discussions from the conference in Napier. "[We're talking about] how we all need to work together, and make sure that the messaging is going out around central and local government on how important cruise is for regional economies, particularly our tourism and hospitality operators." Lloyd expected 660 port calls and about 215,000 cruise passengers to visit New Zealand shores in the 2025/26 season. "That's down from 1120 port calls in 2023/24 and around 330,000 passengers." She said the industry could do little to adapt, rather policy change was needed to keep it from sinking. "We'd rather not adapt, to be honest. We'd like to instead make sure that we get some return in that business, and a key part of it has been around working with government on regulatory changes, transparency on increased costs, and also biosecurity risks." Lloyd said New Zealand was particularly harsh on biofouling - the build-up of algae and other microorganisms on a ship's hull. "[There's a] risk of being turned away, because we don't have a safety net in New Zealand to allow any kind of cleaning, if ships do have any issues, and cruise lines have to go off the 12-mile limit, and wait for a calm day for a diver to go down and clean the ship. "Meanwhile, passengers are on board, wondering why they're not at the destination that they had planned, so that's a real strong risk from a brand reputation and cost reputation." Lloyd said representatives from Ports of Auckland had also spoken at the conference about their plans to facilitate in-water cleaning for visiting ships. "Ports of Auckland has been speaking today about the trials they're doing for in-water cleaning, which has been positive, and they are working with MPI on how they might be able to do that going forward," she explained "That's safe cleaning, not only for the ship, but also New Zealand's environment. We don't want to let any nasties into our waters and cause concerns with our aquaculture industry." Meanwhile, the volatility of New Zealand's tourism policies were problematic for operators that often planned cruises years in advance. "Passengers will book their cruises two years in advance and we've had cases recently where government agencies have increased costs by $11, $12, $20 per passenger, with only a very short two to three-month window," she said. These challenges were causing a decline in New Zealand's global reputation as a cruise destination. "[It was] interesting talking to Princess Cruises today, who spoke at conference, and talked about the fact that the searches for New Zealand and Australia for Princess are down quite considerably on what they have been previously," Lloyd said. "We will need to do a lot of work, as a nation, to promote passengers to come back to our shores." She said job losses would be inevitable. "There will be [job losses], and that will predominantly be through hospitality and tourism providers, drivers for coaches, likely within ports for teams that usually will look after cruise vessels. "There are 10,000 jobs created by [the cruise industry] in the 2023/24 season and we do have concerns that we'll see a reduction for this season coming." Viv Beck, the chief executive of central Auckland's business association Heart of the City, said cruises were an essential source of visitors. "[Cruises] are really important and particularly at a time where spending is down, and we've had severe impacts with construction and Covid-19, and all of the above," she said. "This is one of the means of getting people in here and they arrive right on our doorstep at the bottom of Queen Street. "A reduction in numbers is definitely going to be missed." Cruise ship season sinking fast
