
Caroline Flynn, whose mother has ALS, comes up big in supersectional for Marist. And her family. ‘So much support.'
She helped the RedHawks go from 10 wins last season to 26 this winter, including a trip to the supersectional. She joyfully celebrated the winning of regional and sectional titles in February.
But what she will remember with the most warmth was an East Suburban Catholic Conference game on Jan. 11 against St. Viator as Marist raised money to assist the Flynn family.
Caroline's mother, Molly, has been diagnosed with ALS.
'It was so special and it meant so much to me to have all of that support around me,' Caroline Flynn said. 'I know it's a difficult time, but I had so much support around me to get through this.'
The RedHawks showed that support again Monday night as Flynn came up big with 15 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals in a 62-48 loss to Kenwood in the Class 4A Hinsdale Central Sectional.
Lily Porter added 10 points for Marist (26-9). Olivia Barsch came off the bench and collected a team-high four steals, while Madison Vrdolyak grabbed a team-high four rebounds.
Diann Jackson led Kenwood (33-3) with 20 points and eight rebounds. Ariella Henigan scored 15 points just one game after tallying 36 points against Whitney Young in the Lyons Sectional final.
The Broncos face Alton at 11:30 a.m. Friday in the state semifinals at CEFCU Arena in Normal.
Flynn, meanwhile, has been a starter all season. Her first supersectional game saw her get a steal and a layup plus a 3-point basket in a nine-point run that shaved a 38-28 halftime deficit to 38-37.
'This is the biggest game they have played — ever,' Marist coach Renee Chimino said of her team. 'The fact that she could come in here and handle that and be a rock for her team shows what kind of leader she is.'
Eventually, Kenwood used a 15-0 spurt toward the end of the third quarter and beginning of the fourth to put the game away.
'Basketball is a game of runs,' Flynn said. 'But with the players we have coming back, I'm looking forward to the next two years.'
Porter, a sophomore guard/forward, was proud of Flynn's performance this season.
'She does everything for us,' Porter said. 'She is a spark. She can score and rebound. She passes well. She always brings energy and always knows what to say.
'I know she's just a sophomore, but she's my biggest leader on the team. She means a lot to our team, and I really don't think we would be where we are without her.'
Chimino pointed out that, even though the 5-foot-6 Flynn picked up some starts as a freshman, she had no hesitation of moving her into the lineup as a regular this winter.
'She does every single drill in practice at 150%,' Chimino said. 'You know when a kid does that, it's going to translate on the court. She's fearless for her size, and that's how she earned it.'
For a moment, however, let's go back to Jan. 11.
Flynn finished with eight points and five steals in the fundraising game, but the most important number was how the program raised more than $10,000 for her family.
Caroline said her mother, who was diagnosed in 2024, is 'doing good and hanging in there.'
It wasn't just Caroline who thought that game was special.
'That was really big,' Porter said. 'It just shows how close we are not only as a team but as a community. I think that was the most people we had at a game all year.
'It was the most I've seen packed at Marist, and it shows that we all care for each other — not only as basketball players but as friends.'

The Vermont high school football season kicks off Aug. 29, but practices are underway throughout the state as gridiron fever begins. With the new season upon us brings new rankings for high school football as teams reshape and look towards the road of winning a state championship in the fall. Here's how the Massey Ratings ranked Vermont's Top 25 high school football teams for the 2025 season. The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory. 1. Champlain Valley When it comes to Vermont's top high school football team, Champlain Valley has been the state's best in the last couple of years. The RedHawks were a dominant force throughout the 2024 season and averaging 41 points per game, capping it off with a VPA Division I state championship victory. Champlain Valley Union overwhelmed Rutland Senior, 41-14, to claim the state title. Frank Parisi enters his first season at the helm after serving as the team's defensive coordinator last year. 2. Middlebury Union Middlebury Union last season was a team all throughout 2024 that proved themselves to be a serious contender for the Division I state championship. A game that showed Middlebury could hang with top-ranked Champlain Valley was a 21-7 loss during the regular season. The Tigers enter this season with renewed energy towards making a run behind a defense that yielded around 14 points per game. 3. Hartford The Hartford Hurricanes were right on the cusp of being the next challenger to Champlain Valley as they ended up falling in the Division I semifinals last season, 21-14, to Rutland Senior. Now the Hurricanes begin our Vermont Top 25 rankings at No. 3, though Hartford will need to replace a bevy of starters on both sides of the ball, including tailback Nick Daniels. 4. Rutland Senior The Vermont Division I state runner-ups take the fourth spot after falling to Champlain Valley in a 41-14 decision. Their only other loss on the season came in overtime against Essex Comm. Rutland Senior's offense returns multiple key starters from last year's team, including junior quarterback Giovanni Spallieri (237 passing yards, three touchdowns in 2024) and running back Grady Gallagher (702 rushing yards, eight touchdowns in 2024). 5. Essex Comm. Ed. Ctr. The 2024 regular season ended last year for Essex Comm. Ed. Ctr. in heartbreaking fashion, falling in a tight battle to Middlebury Union, 28-23. One thing the Hornest can hang their hat on from last year's Vermont VPA playoffs is picking up a dominating 64-7 win over Bellows Free Academy. Essex Comm. was junior-heavy last season, especially on the offensive side of the ball as the Hornets will have experience back behind center. Former Red Wing Mark Kirton Passes After Battle Against ALS
Former Detroit Red Wings forward Mark Kirton, who enjoyed the most productive seasons of his NHL career with the franchise, has tragically lost his battle against ALS and passed away Sunday at just 67. Known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a nervous system disease affecting the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord for which there is no cure, nor is the exact cause known. Kirton, who was diagnosed with the disease in 2018, originally began his NHL career with the Toronto Maple Leafs, who made him the 48th pick in the 1978 Draft. He was traded to the Red Wings in 1980 for goaltender Jim Rutherford, and he would go on to score 33 goals with 42 assists in 134 total games with the club. He would also play for the Vancouver Canucks after the Red Wings traded him for Ivan Boldirev; he ultimately appeared in 266 career NHL games, recording 57 goals with 56 assists. He also racked up 123 goals and 202 assists in 458 career games in the American Hockey League. Confound to a wheelchair in 2020, Kirton served on the board of ALS Action Canada. 'We've been living this nightmare for what, a few years now, and I can tell you, it's horrific, it's cruel, it's torture,' Kirton said in September 2024. 'The challenges are not daily challenges, they're like hourly challenges.' Kirton is the second former NHL player to recently pass away from the degenerative illness, which also claimed the life of his former teammate, Börje Salming, a Hall of Fame defenseman who played for both the Maple Leafs and Red Wings, at age 71 in November 2022. Additionally, the illness has recently claimed the lives of Calgary Flames assistant general manager Chris Snow along with former Senators assistant coach Bob Jones. My Ultimate 136 is a set of rankings that is fluid, but it's my job to look ahead and make a claim for all FBS teams based on what I know and why I know it. Here are the three pressing questions I started by asking when putting together this list: Who do I think is good? Why do I think they're good? What are the chances they will finish above or below my expectations? Here is a look at where Miami (Ohio) lands in my Ultimate 136.
