T he tumultuous times we live in pose a stress test for leaders across the spectrum. Those helming businesses are required to make a crucial call about staying the course amid uncertainty or forging a brave, new path.
The protagonist of this issue's cover story, Shina Chung, CEO of Korean internet giant Kakao, opted for the latter. Just over a year into her current assignment, Chung is going all-in on AI, through a landmark alliance with OpenAI, to provide a catalyst for Kakao's growth. The company is gearing up to offer the next generation of virtual assistants later this year to the 49 million users of its superapp KakaoTalk. Senior editor John Kang, who met Chung at her office in South Korea's tech hub of Pangyo, narrates how this could be a game-changer for the company.

Change has been a constant in the five-decades-plus career of Isidro Consunji, a widely respected industrialist in the Philippines. His profile by Ian Sayson and Jonathan Burgos recounts how this second-generation heir took his family's construction business to the next level by scooping up troubled companies—from a coal miner to a power producer—and turning them around. At age 76, Consunji's taken on yet another challenge with the $660 million acquisition by his DMCI Holdings of Mexican giant Cemex's money-losing cement unit in the Philippines.
Another highlight of this edition is the inaugural list of the World's 50 Richest Self-Made Women. The largest number in this group—24—hail from Asia-Pacific, of which 18 are from China (including Hong Kong.) However, despite the increasing numbers of women entrepreneurs, the world's 50 richest self-made men are collectively worth 14 times as much as their female counterparts.
The wealthy in Thailand are showcased in our annual list of the nation's 50 richest, compiled this year by contributing editor Phisanu Phromchanya. Amid tariff and political turmoil, their net worth got a gravity-defying, double-digit boost with the top three notching the biggest wealth gains.

An annual exercise of note is the Forbes Global 2000, a roster of the world's largest public companies, now in its 23rd year. There are a total of 765 Asia-Pacific companies among them, with China (including Hong Kong) leading the group. Significantly, all four metrics—sales, profits, assets and market value—used to rank these 2,000 companies are higher this year despite global uncertainties. Their leaders, undoubtedly, have made the right calls. As always, comments welcome at executiveeditor@forbesasia.com.

South Korea industry minister still concerned about US tariff impact on exporters

SEOUL (Reuters) -South Korea's industry minister said on Monday that the country managed to avoid the worst-case scenario by clinching a U.S. tariff deal, but concerns remained over how the profitability of exporters would be affected by a 15% tariff rate. Industry minister Kim Jung-kwan made the comments at a roundtable meeting with business groups and academics. "There are concerns that the unprecedented 15% tariff will have a significant impact on the profitability of companies exporting to the U.S., especially small and mid-sized companies, compared to local U.S. companies," Kim said in his opening remarks. Under its deal with U.S. President Donald Trump, South Korea also agreed on a $350 billion investment package, including $200 billion in strategic industries such as semiconductors. The rest was earmarked for the U.S. shipbuilding industry. Kim said that the government would continue discussions with the U.S. to work on the specifics of the investment package so it would benefit the country's economy and companies. There is no written agreement yet on the deal between Seoul and Washington, and more follow-up discussions were needed on the investment fund's structure among other details, South Korean officials have said. Regardless of the tariff deal, South Korea will seek a long-term strategy in the face of a new normal era where nationalism is expanding in the global trade environment, Industry Minister Kim said. Investor-Tax Hike Plan Faces Growing Opposition in South Korea

A plan to hike the capital gains tax is facing growing opposition in South Korea, where the proposal caused a sudden slump in stock prices on Friday. The benchmark equity index Kospi rose on Monday. More than 120,000 people have signed a petition to stop the plan that was announced late Thursday, a sign of momentum building against one of President Lee Jae Myung's key domestic policy proposals. Comfortably over the 50,000 signatures needed to make it successful, the petition now heads to review by a parliamentary committee, in a test of the ruling party's resolve to see it through.

RattanIndia's drone arm NeoSky partners with Karnataka Government to deploy drones

By Aman Shukla Published on August 4, 2025, 08:10 IST NeoSky India Limited, the drone subsidiary of RattanIndia Enterprises Ltd (REL), has deepened its presence in Karnataka by supplying advanced surveillance drones to support the state's security infrastructure. The company recently handed over high-tech drones to the Kalaburagi district administration and is preparing to deliver an additional 60 Tavas drones to the Karnataka Police. These drones are designed for tactical and security-focused use, with Tavas featuring a foldable frame, swappable payloads, and obstacle avoidance using LiDAR sensors on all six sides. At an event held on July 24, 2025, at the Vidhana Soudha, Karnataka's Home Minister Shri Gangadharaiah Parameshwara officially received the drones on behalf of the Kalaburagi administration. Two key drone models — the AI-enabled Nimble-I and the lightweight NS01 — were formally introduced into the state's policing system. Nimble-I is equipped for day and night surveillance and supports modular payload changes, while the compact NS01 weighs just 550 grams and includes a high-resolution day camera for discreet operations. NeoSky's collaboration with Karnataka Police is part of its broader engagement with India's defence and law enforcement ecosystem. The company has been actively working with the armed forces, paramilitary groups, and other agencies across the country, offering drones tailored for various mission profiles and environmental conditions. With manufacturing, research, and drone training all under one roof, NeoSky has established itself as a comprehensive player in India's drone sector. It holds a DIPP license to manufacture defence-grade drones, was the first in India to secure DGCA approval, and remains among the pioneers in conducting successful BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) trials. It is also ISO-certified, underscoring its commitment to global-quality standards. Beyond surveillance, NeoSky is helping shape India's next generation of drone professionals through its training initiatives. The company has a ten-year DGCA license to certify drone pilots and is currently training hundreds of students, including graduates and postgraduates from agricultural universities. The training programme isn't limited to defence and law enforcement; it also reaches learners from rural communities, schools, colleges, and even global content creators.
