A video of the accident posted on Facebook page SGRV shows the traffic light slightly askew after the incident.
SINGAPORE - A leopard tank went out of control during a National Day Parade (NDP) National Education show on July 5 because an internal component within the transmission had malfunctioned.
Mindef in a statement on July 11 said this resulted in a loss of transmission oil pressure, causing the L2SG to experience a partial loss in its steering and braking power.
The Leopard 2SG main battle tank participating in the mobile column on July 5 accidentally struck a traffic light while making a turn near Parliament House and the Supreme Court.
The incident took place at about 7.22pm along North Bridge Road , just after the mobile column segment of the show had ended. The tank, which was moving w ithin the 20kmh speed limit inside a cordoned area, and no injuries were reported.
The next day, the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) said the vehicle had experienced a 'technical issue', which resulted in the tank knocking into the traffic light. V ideo footage of the incident, put up later that day on the SGRV Facebook page, shows the tank making a right turn before gently knocking into the pole, leaving it slightly askew.
The clip quickly gained traction online, racking up nearly half a million views overnight. While some netizens took the opportunity to joke about the situation - one quipping 'Tank-ful no one is hurt' - others expressed concern and speculated that the cause could be a mechanical fault, including a possible steering issue.
Preliminary findings released on July 8 pointed to a 'faulty component' that caused the tank to lose both steering and braking power.
Col onel David Kwe k, co-chairman of the NDP 2025 Heartland Celebrations Committee, told the media that the issue was linked to 'an isolated component' in the Leopard 2SG, and that safety checks are ongoing.
While Mindef has confirmed that the tank sustained no significant damage and the traffic light has since been repaired, it added that detailed inspections are under way. The vehicle will only resume its role in the NDP mobile column and heartland celebrations after all necessary safety clearances are completed.

Tesla to sell Model Y cars in India, starting at $89k

Find out what's new on ST website and app. People are seen outside the Tesla showroom ahead of its opening in Mumbai on July 15. MUMBAI - Tech billionaire Elon Musk's Tesla has priced its Model Y at about US$69,770 (S$89,450) in India, the highest among major markets, its website showed, as the electric carmaker geared up to open its first showroom in Mumbai on July 15. With delivery estimated to start from the third quarter, Tesla will drive on to India's busy roads, targeting a niche premium EV segment that accounts for just 4 per cent of overall sales in the world's third-largest car market. It will compete mainly with German luxury giants such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz, rather than domestic mass-market EV players such as Tata Motors and Mahindra. Tesla's Model Y rear-wheel drive will set back buyers 6 million rupees (S$89,000), while its Model Y long-range rear-wheel drive costs 6.8 million rupees. That compares with a starting price from US$44,990 in the United States, 263,500 yuan (S$47,100) in China, and €45,970 (S$68,800) in Germany. Grappling with excess capacity in global factories and declining sales, Tesla has adopted a strategy of selling imported vehicles in India, despite duties and levies running into roughly 70 per cent. On July 15, police guarded Tesla's first showroom in India as media crowded outside the office complex where it is located and the chief minister of the western state of Maharashtra, home to the Indian commercial capital, arrived for the launch. Access was tightly regulated, with no sign of fans or onlookers nearby. Tesla's website showed the Model Y available for registration in Mumbai at an on-road price of 6.1 million rupees, with a booking deposit of 22,220 rupees. The firm's Full Self-Driving (FSD) capability is on offer at an additional cost of 600,000 rupees, with future updates promised to enable operation with minimal driver intervention. While the current features require active driver supervision and are not fully autonomous, Tesla says the system will evolve through over-the-air software updates. REUTERS

Britain offers discounts on EVs to boost demand

Find out what's new on ST website and app. The government said the £650 million funding for the Electric Car Grant will be available until 2028/29. LONDON - The British government will offer discounts worth up to £3,750 (S$6,460) to buyers of electric cars priced at £37,000 or below, it said on July 14, under a new scheme that aims to better align consumer demand with net zero emissions targets. The government will spend £650 million on the discount scheme, which will be available from July 16 to consumers once carmakers sign up for the scheme. As part of a wider goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, Britain wants to phase out sales of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030. But demand for electric cars has stalled with consumers citing high upfront costs as the main barrier. 'This EV grant will not only allow people to keep more of their hard-earned money – it'll help our automotive sector seize one of the biggest opportunities of the 21st century,' Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said. The scheme follows calls from the automotive industry for EV incentives, as carmakers effectively need to sell more EVs each year to meet emissions targets, or pay fines. Britain scrapped a previous incentive scheme for electric vehicle purchases in 2022 as the then-Conservative government shifted focus to spending on expanding the public charging network. A number of European countries including Norway - which has the highest percentage of electric cars in Europe - as well as France and Germany offer incentives for EV buyers including subsidies and exemption from taxes. Ms Ginny Buckley, chief executive of advice website said nearly one in two electric models will be cheaper thanks to the 'long overdue' incentives. The government said the £650 million funding for the Electric Car Grant will be available until 2028/29. By contrast, carmakers had spent around £6.5 billion on electric car discounts since the government's EV sales targets were introduced at the start of 2024, Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders CEO Mike Hawes told reporters in June. Mr Hawes welcomed the new grant on July 14, saying it was a 'clear signal' that now was the time for drivers to switch to an electric car. REUTERS

Musk says he does not support merger between Tesla and xAI

Find out what's new on ST website and app. Mr Elon Musk had earlier said it would be great if Tesla could invest in xAI. Billionaire Elon Musk said on July 14 that he does not support a merger between his electric vehicle maker Tesla and his artificial intelligence startup xAI, which owns the Grok chatbot and competes with the likes of OpenAI's ChatGPT. In response to a user post on X that asked Tesla investors if they supported a merger between the two companies, Mr Musk replied 'No.' On July 13, he had said he would ask Tesla shareholders to vote whether Tesla can invest in xAI, after earlier saying 'it would be great' if Tesla could do so. Tesla and xAI did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. xAI acquired X, formerly called Twitter and also owned by Mr Musk, in a US$33 billion (S$42.3 billion) deal in March this year, valuing the combined group at US$80 billion at the time. Sources told Reuters in June that xAI had been in talks to raise money at a valuation of more than US$120 billion, while a valuation of as high as US$200 billion was also discussed. The Wall Street Journal reported on July 12 that Mr Musk's SpaceX had committed US$2 billion to xAI as part of a US$5 billion equity round. REUTERS
