Fake ID scam: Assam police nab cyber fraud mastermind in Kolkata; used fake Aadhaar, PAN to secure loans worth Rs 1 crore

GUWAHATI: Assam Police have arrested Shoriful Islam , a fraudster, from Kolkata, for duping several financial institutions through identity theft using fake Aadhaar cards and phone numbers. Islam, a resident of Morigaon district in central Assam, has been identified as a key mastermind of cyber fraud in Morigaon district, had targeted leading private sector banks and other financial institutions that provided loans, according to police. On Saturday, Islam was remanded to five days police custody by a local court in Morigaon after he was brought to Assam on a transit demand on Friday. The arrest took place at a guest house in New Market Police Station area in Kolkata on Thursday with coordinated efforts of Morigaon police with Kolkata Police. Four cases have been registered against Islam in different police stations across central Assam's Morigaon district. His property was attached as per provision of U/S-107 BNSS. He was involved in multiple cyber fraud cases. "He was cheating the banks and financial institutions by submitting fake Aadhaar cards and using fake mobile SIM cards," Morigaon SP Hemanta Kumar Das told TOI, on Saturday. Investigating officials revealed that some PAN card numbers were linked with fake Aadhaar cards to deceive bank officials for loan approval. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? Morigaon Police informed that Islam was involved in multiple cyber fraud cases, including illegal procurement of loans from Aditya Birla Finance Ltd. and Axis Bank. Morigaon additional SP (crime) Samiran Baishya said that Islam had been on the run for the past two and a half years, evading capture in Assam and other states. "As per preliminary investigation, he was hiding in 12 to 13 states of India," Baishya said. Police have also received information regarding his foreign visits, and his passport is being verified. During last couple of years, police sources said that he was also hiding in Bangladesh and Thailand. A senior official explained, "PAN number of some established businessmen from 'outside' the state, who have good cibil score, are collected by such fraudsters like Islam from some sources. Then, fake Aadhaar cards are made by the fraudsters with that PAN number in the name of that PAN card holder. There are some tactful steps in stealing identity." The official added that there is a significant market for fake SIM cards, which are essential for obtaining OTPs for loan approvals before being destroyed after securing the loans. "When loans are not returned, then only after further verification, the banks and financial institutions come to know that they have been deceived. However, the photo grabs collected at the time of video tele verification earlier has helped in finding out the culprits," a senior police official said. Fraudsters employ multiple tactics, including repaying initial loan amounts to secure larger loans subsequently, sources said.
