Former Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Ahmadshah dies
KOTA KINABALU: The Ninth Yang Dipertua Negeri of Sabah, Tun Ahmadshah Abdullah, died at a private hospital here at 8.45 pm tonight. He was 78.
Sabah State Secretary Datuk Seri Safar Untong confirmed the news of his passing in a statement issued here tonight.
'The state government has declared a one-day official mourning period (today), during which the Sabah state flag will be flown at half-mast,' he said.
Meanwhile, Ahmadshah's grandson Arfanshah Abdul Gafar called on the public to offer prayers and recite Surah Al-Fatihah for his late grandfather.
'Please recite Al-Fatihah for my grandfather, Tun Datuk Seri Panglima Ahmadshah bin Abdullah, who passed away a short while ago at KPJ Hospital Kota Kinabalu. May he be placed among the faithful. Aamiin Ya Mujib,' he said in a Facebook post.
Ahmadshah was sworn in as Yang Dipertua Negeri of Sabah on Jan 1, 2003, for a four-year term and was reappointed for a second term from Jan 1, 2007, to Dec 31, 2010.
He was married to Toh Puan Dayang Masuyah Awang Japardan, who passed away in 2020, and they were blessed with four children.
Born in Kampung Inanam here on Dec 9, 1946, Ahmadshah, held a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from Indiana State University, United States, and last served as deputy secretary to the Sabah State Government before retiring on Dec 9, 2002.
He also held several key positions in the state administration, including Director of the Sabah Public Services Department, Head of the Home Affairs and Research Division in the Chief Minister's Department, and Secretary of the Sabah Islamic Religious Council.nce its inception in 1991.

Mali says two more army posts attacked as jihadist violence escalates
BAMAKO (Reuters) -Islamist militants hit two more military installations on Wednesday and Thursday, Mali's army said, the latest in a quick spate of attacks that the insurgents say have killed hundreds of soldiers and underscored their gains. Ground and air reinforcements were being mobilised on Thursday morning to respond to an attack on a security post in Mahou, located in eastern Mali near the border with Burkina Faso, an army statement said. The attack was claimed by Jama'a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM), an Al Qaeda-linked Islamist militant group active in Mali and Burkina Faso. Information on a death toll was not immediately available. A military spokesman did not respond to a request for comment. On Wednesday afternoon, "armed terrorists" struck a military camp in Tessit, near the border with Burkina Faso and Niger, and Mali's military sent in aerial reinforcement, a separate statement said. There has been no claim of responsibility for that attack, though security analysts said it could have been perpetrated by fighters from the Islamic State branch active in the Sahel region. "The camp was attacked, and there was a violent exchange of fire. We learned that the attackers had taken control of the camp, and the population was leaving Tessit," said an official from the nearby town of Ouattagouna, who spoke on condition of anonymity for safety reasons. WIDESPREAD ATTACKS Mali's junta seized power following coups in 2020 and 2021, promising to restore security in a country that has grappled with jihadist militancy for more than a decade. But attacks continue in large swathes of the country. An army statement on Thursday described "a resurgence of cowardly and barbaric attacks" in recent weeks and said it was responding with a "counter-offensive", listing operations in six locations on Wednesday alone. An attack on Sunday on a military base in Boulkessi, in central Mali near the frontier with Burkina Faso, killed dozens of soldiers, security sources told Reuters this week. JNIM said in a statement the death toll was more than 100 soldiers and mercenaries, with more than 20 others captured. On Monday, JNIM said it targeted a military airport and Russian mercenaries in the northern city of Timbuktu, where residents described taking cover from explosions and gunfire. Like neighbouring Niger and Burkina Faso, Mali has cut military ties with Western nations and turned to Russia for support. JNIM also claimed to have bombed Malian and Russian soldiers on the outskirts of Bamako on Wednesday, though Reuters could not independently confirm that incident and the army has not commented on it. Consulting firm Control Risks said in a note on Thursday the claim was "reliable" and that further attacks on and near Bamako were likely as JNIM seeks to undermine Mali's military rulers. "There was that possibility, the president of Al-Hilal called me a month ago to ask me about it," Fernandes, who is preparing to face Germany with Portugal, told reporters on Tuesday. "It was a big offer, very ambitious. There was a waiting period for me to think about the future." Fernandes ultimately decided to stay at United and said he was motivated by his desire to continue playing at the top level and encouraged by his family and the club's coach Ruben Amorim. "I would be willing to do it if Manchester United thought so," Fernandes added. "I spoke to the coach Ruben Amorim who really tried to talk me out of it. The club said they would not be willing to sell me, only if I wanted to leave. "I spoke to my wife and family, and she asked me what my personal goals were in my career. Haj rule violations may lead to national consequences
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians planning to perform haj are reminded to comply with procedures set by the Saudi government, as failure to do so could result not only in individual penalties but also impact the nation. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said Saudi Arabia had previously suspended pilgrims from 14 countries due to visa violations. 'I have issued this warning many times before. Don't let our stubbornness in breaking rules set by the Saudi government to cause problems for other haj pilgrims now and in the future. 'If this happens again, it's not just the individual who will face consequences, but the entire country may be affected. This includes a possible reduction or suspension of our haj quota,' he told reporters after launching the Al-Falah Pavilion at the 46th Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair here today. He was commenting on media reports that 63 Malaysians have been deported from Makkah since May 24 for not possessing valid haj visas. Mohd Na'im said such violations could also lead to severe consequences for the individuals involved, including fines of up to 100,000 Saudi riyals and being blacklisted from entering the kingdom for at least five years. However, he said Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) has not received any official complaints regarding the deportations so far. Meanwhile, on reports of alcohol parties held at two five-star hotels in Melaka, Mohd Na'im said such events were inappropriate under Islamic law, especially at hotels with halal certifications. 'The organisation of events that go against Islamic teachings such as this should be subject to action by the relevant authorities, especially the body that issued the halal certification,' he said. Yesterday, Melaka Education, Higher Education and Religious Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Rahmad Mariman said the state Islamic Religious Department (JAIM) had revoked the Malaysian Halal Certification (SPHM) for two hotels in Banda Hilir, after they were found to have hosted alcohol parties two weeks ago.
