Jewellery sales dip 30 per cent in India over fortnight as gold prices rise
Gold jewellery sales in India plummeted by 30% recently, averaging 1,600 kg, as prices surged nearly 5%. This fall is attributed to rising gold prices, which dampened consumer demand despite an initial boost following Akshaya Tritiya.

Gold jewellery sales in India fell 30% to 1,600 kg on average in the past fortnight, according to the India Bullion & Jewellers Association (IBJA), as prices shot up nearly 5%.'In the first fortnight of May, which was followed by Akshaya Tritiya, there was some momentum as prices started falling, touching Rs 92,365 per 10 gm on May 15. But since then, the price of the yellow metal has again started to move northwards, which has dampened the demand,' said Surendra Mehta, national secretary, IBJA.On Tuesday, retail gold prices hovered around Rs 96,960 per 10 gm. With a 3% goods and services tax, the price of 10 gm of gold stood at Rs 99,868.'Mumbai, the nerve centre of the gold jewellery market in the country, has witnessed daily average retail sales of gold jewellery tumbling by 105 kg,' said Mehta.Kumar Jain Kumar Jain, owner of Zaveri Bazaar-based Umedmal Tilakchand Zaveri, said, 'Customers are coming and enquiring about prices and are leaving without purchase. We have seen a 25% drop in demand. Post-Akshaya Tritiya, there was movement in the market, but that has waned.'Kavita Chacko, research head of India at World Gold Council , said stability in prices could prompt a resurgence in demand in the world's second largest consumer of the yellow metal.Jewellers in southern India are also facing a demand drop, even though it is the wedding season in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Verghese Alukkas, managing director of Joy Alukkas, which has 50 stores across southern India, said, 'We have seen a 15-20% drop in demand in the last fortnight.'Aksha Kamboj, vice president of IBJA, said heightened tensions between Russia and Ukraine, despite ongoing peace negotiations, have further contributed to the muted market sentiment. 'These geopolitical and trade-related uncertainties have overshadowed expectations that the US Federal Reserve may delay interest rate cuts until September. In the near term, gold's safe-haven appeal is likely to strengthen as investors seek stability. Looking ahead, the upcoming non-farm payrolls data on Friday will be a key catalyst for bullion price movements," he said.

Drishti IAS to continue independently 'for now', after considering Physics Wallah deal, funding via IPO
'At Drishti IAS, our decisions are always based on a long-term vision. Though we explored various funding options during last year, including Initial Public Offering (IPO) and discussions with a few strategic investors including Physics Wallah, we have decided to continue independently for now. We hope we'll keep doing better on our own, and if required, we'll explore other options as per circumstances in the future,' Drishti IAS CEO Vivek Tiwari told ThePrint. The institute said it will continue to run independently, as it has for several years. New Delhi: A few months ago, reports suggested that unicorn Physics Wallah was in talks to acquire Drishti IAS, which is among the oldest coaching institutes for civil services preparations. While they were dismissed as mere speculations, the IAS coaching institute has now said it was indeed exploring funding options last year, including through Physics Wallah, but ultimately decided not to go ahead with it. Four major coaching institutes—Drishti IAS, Chaitanya Academy, Rau's IAS Study Circle, and Sarathi IAS—were being considered for potential acquisition as part of a larger consolidation wave in the Indian EdTech and test prep market. With online-first players like Physics Wallah and Unacademy looking to strengthen their offline footprint and diversify into civil services coaching, talks with these legacy UPSC institutes had emerged as strategic opportunities to tap into a loyal student base, particularly in Hindi-medium and regional markets. Drishti IAS was founded in 1999 by popular teacher Vikas Divyakirti in Mukherjee Nagar. It became one of the most well-known institutes for Hindi-medium UPSC aspirants. The Delhi-based institute reported a revenue of Rs 405 crore and a profit after tax of Rs 90 crore in FY24. Vikas Divyakirti's popularity is such that he even appeared in the movie 12th fail, Videos of his classes and lectures receive millions of views on social media. The institute moved to Noida last year after infrastructure issues in Mukherjee Nagar were flagged, following the death of three UPSC aspirants in another institute in the Old Rajinder Nagar area, and fire incidents at other institutes in Mukherjee Nagar. Coaching institutes came under intense scrutiny by public and authorities for infrastructure lapses and licensing issues after these incidents. Sources at Drishti IAS said the institute remains profitable. Physics Wallah is known for offering affordable online coaching. It first gained popularity through YouTube and later launched online courses for JEE and NEET aspirants for admission in engineering and medical courses. But over the last few years, it has been expanding its offerings. It entered the UPSC coaching space after joining forces with OnlyIAS in 2022. The potential acquisition of Drishti IAS was seen as a strategic move to bolster Physics Wallah's offline presence and diversify its portfolio ahead of its planned IPO. Rs 500 notes to be discontinued from March next year? Here's what govt says
Representational Image The Central government has rejected the claims made in a YouTube video that the Rs 500 currency not would be phased out from circulation from March next year. In a post on X, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) fact-checked the claim, stating that no such announcement has been made by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and Rs 500 notes would continue to remain legal tender. 'A YouTube video on the YT Channel 'CAPITAL TV' (capitaltvind) falsely claims that the RBI will discontinue the circulation of Rs 500 notes by March 2026. RBI has made NO such announcement. Rs 500 notes have NOT been discontinued and remain legal tender,' the PIB informed. The fact-check came after a video on video-sharing platform YouTube claimed that the government was planning to phase out the Rs 500 note from March next year, akin to how Rs 2000 currency notes were removed from circulation. The 12-minute video, which has over 5 lakh views on YouTube, has been widely shared on other social media platforms. However, authorities have rejected the claims made in the video, and urged netizens to always verify such information from official sources. 'Don't fall for such misinformation. Always verify news from official sources before believing or sharing it,' the PIB added in its post. Earlier, the government phased out the Rs 2000 notes, urging people to deposit this denomination in the banks. However, Rs 2000 are still considered legal tender, and Rs 6,181 crore worth of notes are still in circulation, according to media reports. Currently, Rs 500 is most widely-circulated currency note in India, accounting for 41% of the total notes, with an 86% share in transactions done via cash. The government is urging citizens to use smaller denominations and digital payments, but Rs 500 notes continues to be a big part of cash transactions in the country.

Farm reset: Government says agriculture sector reshaped in 11 years, budget surged five-fold since 2013 & crop output jumped
A surge in budget allocation and sustained policy focus over the past 11 years has led to a wide-ranging transformation in India's agricultural sector, the Centre said on Saturday, crediting flagship schemes with driving output, procurement, and farmer support to new highs. In an official statement, the government said its agri reforms have empowered farmers and repositioned India on the path from food security to global agricultural leadership. The transformation, it said, has focused on inclusive development — covering smallholders, women-led groups, allied sectors, and traditional practices such as millet farming. 'Over the past eleven years, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, India's agricultural sector has undergone a profound transformation, rooted in the philosophy of Beej Se Bazaar Tak (seed to market),' the statement said, quoted PTI. Budgetary support for the Department of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare has risen nearly five times — from Rs 27,663 crore in 2013-14 to Rs 1,37,664.35 crore in 2024-25. Foodgrain output also recorded an increase from 265.05 million tonnes in 2014-15 to an estimated 347.44 million tonnes in 2024-25. The government said it has sharply increased minimum support prices (MSP) for key crops. Wheat MSP rose from Rs 1,400 per quintal in 2013-14 to Rs 2,425 per quintal in 2024-25, while the paddy MSP increased from Rs 1,310 to Rs 2,369 per quintal between 2013-14 and 2025-26. Since its launch in 2019, the PM-KISAN scheme has disbursed Rs 3.7 lakh crore to over 110 million farmers. Separately, about Rs 10 lakh crore in credit has been sanctioned to 7.71 crore farmers under the Kisan Credit Card initiative. Crop procurement volumes have seen a sharp uptick. Kharif procurement between FY15 and FY25 totalled 787.1 million tonnes, compared with 467.9 million tonnes in the previous decade. MSP procurement of pulses jumped from 1.52 lakh tonnes (2009–2014) to 8.3 million tonnes (2020–2025), while oilseeds procurement has grown multifold over the same period. The Centre highlighted additional measures such as investments in modern irrigation, digital agri-marketplaces, tech-led solutions, and credit support. Allied sectors like dairy and fisheries have also expanded during the period. 'As India enters Amrit Kaal, its empowered farmers stand ready to lead the nation from food security to global food leadership,' the government said.
