Hugh Freeze expects Auburn to ‘get over edge' against UGA, Alabama
Freeze said Tuesday at SEC Media Days that the reshaped roster and experience on his side -- not to mention playing rivals Alabama and Georgia at home -- is enough to turn the tables in Auburn's favor in games like those against the behemoths of the Southeastern Conference.
Alabama was two scores better than the Tigers in 2024 (28-14) in the annual Iron Bowl, while Georgia beat the Tigers by 18.
Why does Freeze think this year will be different?
"Number one, playing at Jordan-Hare is a definite advantage in those games for sure," Freeze said. "And our roster is one that can compete with those teams. We've been in the games even the first two years, but we haven't found a way to win.
"And that's one of the secrets, I think, to our success this year is having guys that we think we've brought in that have the combination of all of it, not just skill set, but this guy's a winner and has been proven to win and now will help us get over the edge in all these close games like those two will be."
One of the guys Freeze views as a difference-maker is Oklahoma transfer Jackson Arnold. He's in line to be the QB1 for Auburn in the opener against Baylor and should be fully up to speed by the time the Tigers face his old team on Sept. 20.
Arnold was not viewed as the top prize in the transfer portal by every team and won few over with statistics. But Freeze said circumstances painted that picture, and it wasn't reality.
He was sacked more times than any quarterback in this SEC and sixth-most across all of college football last season.
"I loved Jackson out of high school. I think everybody did. He was a Gatorade Player of the Year, top quarterback in the country coming out. Boy, he fit everything that I believe in doing offensively, (offensive coordinator Derrick) Nix does too. We've been together a long time, and he just fits that," Freeze said.
"So I knew how I felt about him then, but of course you're doing this speed dating here and things weren't great statistically or whatever performance-wise. Then you have to do a deep dive into why was that, and can I get past whatever that was. When you evaluate it, you said it, he had several different play callers, injured offensive line and receivers, and yet when you pull all of his throws, I still saw that there it is, that's what I saw. There it is again. He still has that about him."
Freeze lauded the toughness Arnold brings at the position. He said the Tigers are offering him a needed restart to prove who he is as a player.
Arnold, also at SEC Media Days on Tuesday, said he has no ill will toward the Sooners for their decision to move in another direction. He was replaced as OU starter after only four games last season.
He wound up back in the starting lineup by the end of the season and beat then-No. 7 Alabama. That win opened Freeze's eyes because of Arnold's guts and big plays with his legs.
One of his next big chances to open some other people's eyes will be his SEC debut with Auburn -- in Norman.
"Things happen. Things happen for a reason," Arnold said. "Sometimes things work out the way it's supposed to be. You know, we're on God's timing, you know, not our timing. And, for me, I felt the best decision for me was to move on and move on somewhere else to get a fresh start, like you said, and go out and do what I know I can do with this Auburn squad this year."

Can Kerry Carpenter's return help the Tigers get right?
DETROIT — Kerry Carpenter wheeled his suitcase through a set of double doors and entered the Detroit Tigers' clubhouse Sunday morning. You could practically feel the atmosphere in the room lighten. Here, finally, was good news. Here, finally, was real help. At his best, Carpenter is the Tigers' most dangerous left-handed hitter. He is a powerful chess piece, the queen on A.J. Hinch's managerial board. He's a hitter opposing managers target, a player who can enter a game off the bench or get flipped for a pinch hitter in a crucial spot. Advertisement 'The look of the lineup, the feel, the strategy, everything is better with Kerry Carpenter in it,' Hinch said. Carpenter's presence was sorely missed during a brutal stretch in which the Tigers lost 12 of 13 games. Really, it's been missing since the start of June, when Carpenter was playing through a hamstring injury and clearly wasn't right. He hasn't drawn a walk since May 23, and he hit .194 after June 3. Carpenter finally went on the injured list July 2 after tweaking the right hamstring again. The All-Star break provided a clear time for a reset. Carpenter worked his way back. Said he began feeling better quickly. He went on a rehab assignment, took a couple of games to find his timing and his mechanics. Before Saturday's game in Triple A, Hinch texted Carpenter. 'Call me after your game,' he wrote. Carpenter ended up connecting on a pair of line drives and hit a home run Saturday. Afterward, he called his manager. Told him he was feeling good. He asked Hinch what he needed to see next. 'We need you in the lineup,' Hinch told him. Sunday morning, Carpenter was back in Detroit, back at his locker and back in the middle of the Tigers' order. 'That's the worst, is not being able to do anything to help,' Carpenter said of the Tigers' losing streak. 'We got a bunch of good hitters on this team. Whatever we can do to get out of this, I'm sure it's gonna come pretty quickly. I'm just excited to be in the middle of it and be back with these guys.' Carpenter's arrival proved to be a harbinger of good things Sunday. In the series finale against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Tigers won 10-4 and snapped a six-game losing streak. Jack Flaherty was in sync, commanding his stuff with precision and mixing his arsenal to devastating results. He threw six scoreless innings and even ended the day by pumping a 96.1 mph fastball — tied for his fastest pitch this season — past Ernie Clement. GL3YB3R TORR3S 💣 — Detroit Tigers (@tigers) July 27, 2025 Flaherty was able to pitch with the lead because Gleyber Torres hit a three-run home run in the third inning. The Tigers had started the inning getting hits from Dillon Dingler and Parker Meadows. Javier Báez and Colt Keith followed with two flyouts, both too shallow to score Dingler from third. So there with two outs, Torres was in the midst of an 0-for-16 slump. The hitter who has been a consistent contributor all season then delivered the big swing his team has been waiting for. With Carpenter lurking behind him in the order, Torres launched a challenge fastball from Max Scherzer high over the opposite-field wall. Advertisement Again, you could practically feel the exhale reverberating from the dugout up through the Comerica Park stands. Scherzer still shut down the Tigers, retiring his final 13 batters. But the lineup came alive in the eighth inning, good at-bats strung together like this team has not done for the bulk of July. The Tigers scored seven runs, six coming with two outs. 'It feels like we hadn't seen that in a while, right?' Hinch said. 'We really had a hard time showing our identity and what we're about when we're not collecting hits.' A small detail to consider: Carpenter's presence forced the Blue Jays to bring in left-hander Justin Bruihl with two outs in the eighth. Hinch inserted right-hander Matt Vierling, who singled, in Carpenter's place. After a base hit from Riley Greene, the Tigers had a run of favorable matchups against the lefty and kept upping the number on the scoreboard. Carpenter went 0-for-3 Sunday, but his return will play a large role in the Tigers' quest to get back to their winning identity. 'Kerry's presence matters,' Hinch said. 'It changes how they navigate our lineup. He's a really big threat. It plays into how Gleyber is getting pitched because Kerry's a threat. When you can impact a game and not necessarily be the feature of a game, that's a middle-of-the-order bat. … Our lineup just looks different and functions differently with him in it.'

The Tigers ended their 6-game skid Sunday with a 10-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays as -113 home favorites as the Over (8.5) cashed. Diamondbacks at Tigers picks and predictions Diamondbacks 7, Tigers 5 Moneyline BET DIAMONDBACKS (+110). The Diamondbacks are in a favorable spot to take Monday's series opener in Detroit. Arizona sends Rodriguez to the mound, who's been solid on the road, allowing just 5 earned runs over his last 3 road starts (14 2/3 IP). He's coming off a strong outing, holding Houston scoreless through 6 1/3 innings. On the other side, Detroit rookie Melton makes his second career start—and first at Comerica Park—after giving up 6 earned runs in 5 innings in his debut. That home crowd pressure won't make things easier. The Tigers have dropped 7 of their last 10 games at home and enter the week struggling at the plate, hitting an MLB-worst .197 over the last 15 days. While Detroit looked better on Sunday, it's tough to trust this offense to stay hot. At plus odds, the value lies with Arizona to grab the series opener on the road. Run line/Against the spread PASS. I'm going to keep my wager to the run line. Over/Under BET OVER 9 (+100). The Over has hit in 7 of the last 8 games between the Tigers and Diamondbacks, and recent trends support more scoring Monday. The Over is 3-2-1 in Detroit's last 6 games and has cashed in 4 of Rodriguez's last 6 starts. Expect another high-scoring affair in this series opener. Play our free daily Pick'em Challenge and win! Sherrone Moore seeks undefeated Michigan season, not just in 2025, but every year
Despite being the protégé to Jim Harbaugh, Sherrone Moore isn't getting the same love as, say, David Shaw had after Harbaugh left Stanford. Yes, the Cardinal still thrived in the immediate aftermath, but Shaw also still had Andrew Luck to lead the charge on offense -- Moore wasn't dealt such a hand. Yet, we see him recruiting at an elite level -- even better than Harbaugh -- while also getting wins over Michigan's rivals, even in a year when it appeared the Wolverines had no business doing so. Moore may have led Michigan to an 8-5 record in 2024, but that's not his intent. With his recruiting and transfer portal prowess, he's looking to build a monster. And though he doesn't get the same benefit of the doubt as, say, Marcus Freeman at Notre Dame, or Kalen DeBoer at Alabama, he's seeking excellence commensurate with the maize and blue's ceiling. "I'm hell-bent on being undefeated every year. That's the standard," Moore said at Big Ten media days. "You don't want to lose any game. That's the goal (as a coach. You want to be undefeated every year. So for me, yeah, the standard is not 8-5, and the goal is to win every single game and to be successful and hoist the trophy again. Because once you win one, you get greedy. You want to win another. And that's the goal over here. "But we know it's going to take work, so can't be worried about the past, can't be worried about tomorrow. Because they don't owe you anything, so all we're worried about is today, and that's all we're going to do is work to be the best version of ourselves today." Michigan finished the season better than any team not named Ohio State in 2024 -- and that's because it beat the eventual national champion Buckeyes. That carried over to the ReliaQuest Bowl, where the Wolverines shocked Alabama -- a team bringing in all of its starters -- despite being significantly shorthanded. It was a reflection of the head coach, as his confidence going into those weeks permeated through the locker room (though that's not something he'd admit). He never lost his team, and they continued to believe, and it showed on the field. Moore recounted the killer instinct that his Wolverines had and why they were able to overachieve compared to expectations. "Just the instilled confidence that they have and the confidence that they got in those games. It wasn't a magic potion or something that we did, and it wasn't the way we changed practice because we practiced the same," Moore said. "But the energy, the focus, the level of confidence that they had in those games was definitely different than the others, and we'll just continue to apply it like that and just work. The leaders on the team saw it. The leaders on the team see it and continue to let our leaders be leaders and empower them as much as possible to make sure we continue that." Despite the late-season success and Moore's 4-0 record as Michigan's interim coach in 2023, he's not given much of a chance, according to many. In Big Ten head coaching rankings, CBS Sports listed Moore as the 15th-best in the conference, even though he's one of only two in the Big Ten who have beaten a Ryan Day-led Ohio State team (Dan Lanning is the other, though he also lost to the Buckeyes). But if his closing statement in 2024 is any indication, that ranking, and his national perception, will be changing in short order.
